Poker in various degrees for students!!!!

edited April 2010 in Poker Chat
Hi all, this is my 1st thread, so forgive me for any dullness it may have......or the frequent ramblings that may occur....
OK all the 1st time nerve stuff dealt with , I will start my chatter....

I am no doubt not the only student who uses sky poker, and I am sure I'm NOT the only student who does anything and everything in their power to avoid starting doing any form of essay work or reading for class or exams alike.
BUT help needed here I think, as I am now finding myself doing sit and goes or quick speed games, 4 player heads up are a favorite of mine when in between classes and bounty hunters are a sure bonus for me when i know I have an essay due....ooooops I sure do hope my tutors don't play sky poker or no more extensions for smiler LOL
My hubby is great at getting me refocused when I am studying at home, as he is right there to nudge me in the right direction again, but when sat at Uni and I have a couple hours between class or lectures, and inside I know I SHOULD use this time to work on essays etc, but nope..... i do everything and anything apart from that written work.!!! ANYWAY MY POINT IS THIS, do you know of any GOOD ways to keep unfocused on sky poker when i should be studying!??!

LOL TRUST ME when i say its NOT an addiction to the game, its more an addiction to NOT doing my essays or reading any books to enable me to do them i the 1st place, I have even sat and placed my CD collection in alphabetical order or my books that I should be reading into order of size.... LOL!!!!!
ANYTHING other than start on the work I should be doing.
This is turning into a desperate time as I am approaching exams soon and then dissertation work starts after that, so come on,....let me know a GOOD way to keep focused on Uni work and then I can enjoy my games of poker when I play rather than be filled with guilt on each game. Even when I win a game I am still feeling guilty for playing OMG this is sooooooo bad LOL

So, 1st time nerves over with, I look forward to your replies and comments.....

Here's hoping I pass these up and coming exams or I will be seeking some financial gain from playing even more games here on Sky Poker to repay my student loans I got out. LOL.....
PLEASE dont reply with such things as " just stay focused or be more disciplined as I HAVE TRIED that too  :) It always ends up with books opened but me sat else where on my lap top,...yep you guessed it,.....playing poker or fixing up my CD collection again hahahahah

Thanks in advance for your advice / replies/ comments....

Hey, there are a fair few students playing on sky poker. I am also terrible at putting off work and doing something poker related... so i guess its not good news for you that you have started using the forum lol.
You just have to be ridiculously disciplined with yourself considering exams are coming up, make yourself work and dont let yourself go anywhere near poker or do anything else until you have done some work.
You say your husband helps to refocus you... just imagine him there telling you to work lol.

Good luck with your exams and good luck at the tables :) x

During my last year at Uni, I started using the "Cool Off" button, (Click on My Account, then Stop Betting, if I remember right) which only lasts 24 hours at a time, but gives you a full day of revision / work, poker-free.

    Maybe worth a try?

Hey Smiler, Welcome to the forum!!! (we need more women around here...trust me on a weekend it's testosterone city!!!)

I would recommend reverting to good old fashioned pad and paper...you can't get onto the poker sites at campus...trust me i tried every workaround i could think of when i was at uni :o)

It's all about diversionary tactics, the fact is that you don't want to read those dafty books at uni so wait til you get home...I recon a when you have a couple of hours between lectures then play if you feel like it!! Leave the revision until you get home...you need to have fun sometimes!!!

Don't give yourself too hard a time, if you have focus at home then surely that is the best place to do your uni work??

    Good luck whatever you decide!!!

re: to not able to get onto poker sites when on campus....well MAYBE its just something that has not been flagged up at I.T at my uni, as I always get straight access to sky poker, be it from the computers scattered about campus and the library to using my own lap top and just using campus internet ... OH NOOOOO have i just landed myself in hot water with that sentence??? LOL.
Sadly though the use of such sites as Facebook are also available on campus, this is MOST annoying when sat in a seminar or lab class doing BOOOOORRRING classes such as SPSS and the group over in the corner are clicking away on facebook when I am doing my best to refrain from asking them to stop clicking on facebook and start typing in a work book, but then i guess it makes me seem a swat if i were to do that. Trust me thats NOT the case, its more a concentration issue I SWEAR lol!!!
But thank you for the advice, I think I still need to go into campus to study, especially as its dissertation planning time now, MAYBE I can find some stamina and focus on work oppose to working on my chip stack LOL

Seriously I had never even played the game untill I met with my hubby, he is a BIG fan of poker and quite a good player, I used to sit there with a blank look on my face when he spoke of Blinds and flops even worse when he spoke of the river etc, I often wondered to myself WHAT ON EARTH is he on about!? Playing Cards while out on the river tees? and how can he be playing with someone who is blind, gotr kinda scared when he spoke of always betting on a flop OMG I was TOTALLY LOST at this stage , so i took it upon myself to learn, started with free play games on a different site, (Poker Stars) But beginers luck shone on me BIG TIME, sadly though my hubbys boss was not shining with smiles especialy when i kepttexting asking him what I shud do, I had Q 2 and I wanted to bet but how much,.... ( YOU MAY see that I have a fav hand on my profile, and I KNOW its daft but  Q 2 always seem to come up trumps for me LOL) He would cringe when watching me play at the start of my game, still cringes now to be honest BUT I do a lot better than I did on weeks 1 and 2 etc, now I only play small games, sit n goes or small cash tables, OH NOOOOO there I go again, I am MEANT to be doing a project report that is due in on the 12 April LOL OMG!!!!
SEE? ANYTHING at all, other than START the work for my degree.... hahahaha Maybe I shud take a new direction in my career choice? One that does not need a degree LOL

OH well, i will plod on and see what happens.....
Thanks for the reply and i look forward to hearing from you again sometime soon

well Hurst, I could do something that needs no exams, but the problem still remains that I will ALWAYS look for something OTHER than study when I need to be studying...LOL
self discipline is the key to me passing this degree i think.

Strange thing is, its not just the course work that gets in the way of poker, its poker getting in the way of any part of life that needs thought, planning, and budgeting for. LOL aka anything that is meant to be the norm for civilised adults today LOL

I think I may just change my dissertation to some type of diversion tactic study and use sky poker members as my research tools..hhmmmmmmm........ ( deep in thought now..... WOW LOL for the 1st time EVER I am thinking while still logged into to Sky Poker) hahahaha

Thanks again for your comment, but sadly graphic design wont help me get the job i want, not much call for graphic design in youth studies these days  LOL

Have a great day and good luck at all tables

    Hello BlackFish3,
Yes, My hubby DOES help me refocus, however, he cant be there all day every day when I am at uni or in the library.. I THINK I need some of the good old fashioned army discipline he swore by for so long and that may keep me focused on the task set for the day...... sounds a bit extreme though, but willing to try just about anything to prevent me from having to do resits AGAIN this year.....lol  BUT I THINK it MAY just have some bad side effects though......
I can just see it now,

Hubby to wife: Oi come on love, get that pen on paper and give me a word count of 2000 and no slacking.... stop whining and get it done.....right you get another 1000 in capitals now for your lack of effort..... and to teach ya to accept your denial of deviant behaviour I want you to sit and cite from memory the works of the CSSS before you break for coffee"
Wife to hubby: OK OK IF I have to steer clear of poker while essays are needing to be done, then you do to, shall we study together sweetheart???!!!
Hubby to wife " erm,.... you wanna go log on and play the 7pm match for team TK hunnie"?

LOL - AGAIN the poker wins over study. HAHAHAHAHA

Seriously though, I have the cleanest Loo, and the neatest CD collection in the whole of the North East, My You Tube channel is all up to date, email that had sat for months with no replies are all replied and new ones sent on top of that, even started making new vids lately for my YT channel too, like i say ANYTHING other than study LOL

well MAYBE I will do as one post said and resort to pen and paper, rightly so I cant log on to any web site with a biro now can i?
     hahahaha

Thank you for your advice though.

    GL at the tables too.

THANK YOU for that, but I KNOW i will just end up playing for Play money, I have already set a cap of point for betting/depositing cash to my account. I have to say that this is an excellent facility for this site .
However, I once veered of and took a peek at the Bingo and Vegas section of the sky bet website and have to be honest I lost a fair amount in such a short amount of time. Maybe I do not always win at poker, but the money I deposit is ALWAYS guaranteed to last a LOT longer on a poker game than it is on a spin/slot machine or bingo game. Maybe sky can come up with an add-on to cap ones spending per spin or per book etc on these sections of the site? I know we are all responsible for our own spends and bank roll, but I was shocked at just how quick ten pound goes when on a spin/slot machine. ( You can tell i am 100% Scottish as I know a tenner can last me for 2-3 weeks on poker games LOL)
Anyways, thats totaly of the topic of the thread, ooops... hmmmm Im chattering away AGAIN, guess who should be reading or typing for a project LOL

So, whats your opinion on the stuff mentioned above? do u think that the slots/spin games should hold some sort of cap on spending in a set amount of time? I dunno, say for example, you can set it to only allow you to spend a max of 10 pound in 24-48 hours..... OR do you see it as the players choices/decisions are not fogged over when playing such games? and they should be able to continue at spinning away what ever sum they desire in as quick a time as possible?

ooooh I feel a debate coming along soon LOL

    Thanks for your feedback

    Kind regards

    Hi again,
well speaking of unique dissertatios, my spss tutor told me of a student 2 years ago who done a study on the econonimal benefits or lack of, in keeping a cow alive.... SERIOUSLY!!! He wanted to see if it was better for a village to kill that cow and live for a week or pay to keep it alive and live with fresh milk and possiblity of breeding etc etc,...WOW WHAT A UNIQUE dissertation that must of been eh...lol
Mine seems kinda boring now after all, Its on a Youth and young offenders, Is it better to imprison or rehabilitate/ prevention... I will look at such things as Money, young persons ability to survive AFTER jail and,...well it goes on and on....
MAYBE I need to look way outsode the box with this one, OR just change the topic.
TRY do a sttudy on something as bazare as the cow thing LOL

Well I will go and have a think on this one and let ya know what I decide
     Have a grea weekend

    Regards

Days such as today make it EVEN harder to focus on study,..... started with just 2.02 left in my account, popped onto a cash table for a few minutes and left with 100% profit, then entered a 30 player BH, and to my MASSIVE surprise I came 2nd!!! OMG!! WOW
I aint been playing very long and only really play regular when i have uni work due, so i dont have that big a game to play really, but luck seems to be on my sode today, WOW IM SO SMILEY sat here now, ok ok ok i know its JUST a couple quid, not that big a prize BUT I dont usualy win many games, never mid sit on a final table facing a player with 48000 chips against my 3,345 LOL I ACTUALLY knocked out folk with 20 thou plus, and sat there with 3 thous chips.... as u may guess my hubby was shocked too, Proud as punch though but still shocked that the type of game i play had got this far....

So as he sat playing on poker stars, i popped onto sky poker and im SOOOOOO happy that I did today,.... as for study that will be done during the next few days, after all it IS MEANT to be Easter break! LOL
Thank you ALL for posting on here, I look forward to reading more stuff from you all...........
Of to sneak a peak at what my hubby bought me for easter LOL

And my hubbys team won too, against Tot-spurs....gutted though as we WRE gonna buy tickets for that game, but decided to wait for a bigger game... wish we had gone now after all!!! LOL

I have been waiting to see if you popped to the other thread " How should we spend OUR money" some folk said that you would come over etc and that I had bitten of more than I could chew with it LOL....??......anyway, it has got a BIT deep/debate style now,...so not as relaxing as many other posts...BUT STILL GREAT fun though and teaching me a lot.... so i guess thats the answer to THIS thread! Add one that IS study related!!!!LOL

Anyway, to update on this thread, it seems that starting a debate on the one mentioned above has distracted me EVEN more from my study.... i got finals soon ( ok well finals for my 2nd year anyway) and I need masses of revision done.... I got placeent hours to do but they are on the backburner this week while i TRY do all binding and power points needed for dissertation proposal, Oh and i still have an 8000 word portfolio to do..... LOL
You know of any other students who see things as bad as me at this point in the year?lol

    Well summer break is nearing
The work is all due in
But there is an exam im fearing
but cant let the nerves win
I need to pass all modules
and pass em with good marks,
to go into my 3rd year
and finish with a 2.1. pass

But all the work keeps building
as i type on this here thread
My hubby has been supportive, and broke it all in chunks
But I still lay there worrying, at night when laid in bed
"Will i be the ONLY one to fail,
will i be left with this haunting me,
will it make me old, tired and frail?"

But now I see what's needed,
To tackle it all head on.
do it all in little bit
do it one step at a time
and IM ASSURED that ALL will be just fine.....

It will all be over soon, and i'll have my Degree in hand
with a name scribbled onto the bottom
AND that name,....... it will be MINE.....

( THEN The real worry starts.... how many jobs out there for my chosen career?? LOL or should i go back to do an MA in a chosen feild? an easier one than some of the ones im doing now though!!!LOL)

    Have a good day
    GOOD luck with your poker

OMFG Im Due at Uni in an hr....and Im still sat on this site! PMSL!!!

and I giggle/nag at my hubby when he has sat at the screen for 14+ hours when playing a tourny....shame on me! LOL
