who played it wrong?? me or him??

edited October 2009 in Hold'em Poker Strategy
last night.. i had 88 on the button.. it was folded around to me, i put a 120 raise in (15/30) and the big blind called.. when the flop came ak9 i thought as i raised pre i could play the ace.. he checked it to me so i bet 180.. he called.. thought he may have somthing here, but as he checked again after the turn showed a 3... not a scare card so i bet 240.. he called again.. now think im behind and we both check the river which was again a nothin card and he showed 92 to win the pot..

should i have fired again bigger on the river or just have got out of the way when the overcards 2 my 8s came??

ur thoughts please

think you just came up against someone who refuses to fold, i'd check like you and wait for a better spot - bet you he's calling the river as well....some people are just stubborn

Imagine it from his point of view - you're on the button - a position that you are meant to be stealing from and he wants to draw a line in the sand - so he calls  - (Not optimal in my opinion with 92 - but the fact is he did)

So you've raised it up and he has chosen not to believe you.
Your first bet is strong, but he has hit his 9, (remember 66% of time your opponent will miss the flop) and effectively has already decided that you don't have a Ace or King in your hand - so he's good - and if not he can get away from the hand on the turn after he evaluates your next move.

Your next bet is the right idea, but weak - to be honest i might have raised you with air here just to see if you were confident in your hand - he has showdown value - so has no need - as should his read be wrong he is artificially inflating the pot for the wrong reasons - and achieves nothing more than hurting himself.

Should he be wrong, he has extracted information relatively cheaply, should he be right he has won a nice pot.

Hope this makes sense - and is of some use in deciphering his line of thinking

3-barrel this fish all the time. They never call the river. Profit

i think on your first instict of him having something... you stop betting. you dont know he wasnt sitting in the big blind with A-?/K-?, either of which beats you here. Also, he's done nothing but act like he's slow playing a monster because youre playing an aggressive hand. I would have stopped the betting on after your tester bet, which was a good bet, which he called. if youre going to ask a question with a feelr bet, then not listen to the answer, then don't bother asking I say.
Having said all of this, he didnt have a monster, but may well have done. Good luck with this in the future, remember you can't lose what you don't put in the middle.

its annoying he called your pre flop raise of 120 in the first place when all he had was 92, and then he thought he had a good kicker with his measly 2 when a A and K hit the board...Hmmmmm.....

first of all im guessing this was quite a low stakes game???  often u will come across ppl in these who will play anything and virtually call anything.

i like the bet u made on the flop, be wary of the check call tho it can come across like a monster or at least he has something and just thinks ur making a continuation bet.  to mix it up a bit u cud have checked the turn behind him, this way u can either check the river down aswell to save urself some chips if this guys a calling station or u cud mix it up a bit with a raise to his river bet,  this looks strong and he shud have folded here.

Your raise and cbet was correct, I think alot of players would fold against your cbet on the flop and an even higher percentage on the turn, I would have also checked the river and then straight away I would make a note on him and then  wait till I hit and then use the same betting pattern to extract value out of him.

The only thing I would have done different is bet 3/4 of the pot on the turn.
