Hope I don't sound stupid but what is it?
A check in the dark is when you check your action before seeing then next available community card.
For instance if you and I are in a hand before the flop and the betting is finished. If I am first to act on the next round of betting I may "check in the dark" before we see the flop.
The main reason for doing this is to essentially gain position on your opponent. By checking in the dark (before seeing the next community cards) you are pushing your opponent to make a decision before you do. It happens on occasion in live play and generally doesnt work unless you hit a strong flop.
I hope this answers your question.
Andy
Thanks Andy & Norbit, that makes sense now although I'm not really sure of why you'd want to do this? Having said that I have mentioned in another thread that I've never played live before except for a few homes games
Hi Fastway,
I don't really think "checking in the dark" migrates well to Online Poker.
In fact, Marcel Luske apart, I've yet to meet a Live Player who really understands what advantage - or disadvantage - it confers on the Check-In-The-Dark-Er.
It was used alot in 7 card stud POT limit. ... Cash and tourney !!!
Back in the early 90's when some of the Europeans were here for the UK (or British) Festival at Luton, i remember sitting having coffee with Dave Walsh and Mike Sexton (yes that one) at the Old Grosvenor Casino. Mike Sexton asked the same question then ..
In Britain at 7 card stud it;s the high card to open the betting, in Europe it's the low card to open the betting !!
So basically suppose what happened( or could happen) High card opens and say gets three callers, an option instead of waiting to see 4th street, was to say "IF it's me im checking in the dark... Note the word "IF' because one of the other players may have paired their board making it their turn to 'check or bet' !!
The thing with this 'Check in the Dark' then was, the opener with the Ace showing could be disguising a monster (AA)A or (Qc Kc) Ac or maybe rags. Either way it was a way of confusion to the three other players in the pot. Of course it could be used on 5th 6th and 7th steets as well..
As TK says Marcel Luske knows what he's doing with this play at Hold em..i think you will find he developed it form 7 card stud games in the UK..
The best use ive seen of 'Check in the Dark was by the late great "Hemish Shah' in the 2000 Late Night Poker against a Frenchman whose name i cant remember ..he was in the B/B and Hamish in the S/B. I think the hand was Hamish called in the small blinds with rgs 9c 3c ... B/B raised ..Hamish called !! flop c c c (flush for Hamish) he checks B/B bets ... Hamish flat calls ..
and THEN ... before the dealer deals the turn, Hamish says .. "I'm checking in the Dark" turn comes .. the Frenchman looks at Hemish and says "You checked" ? Hamish raised his eyebrows and nodded 'yes' !! Frenchman moved All-in and the rest was history !! I think Hamish's chips were in before the Frenchman's ..Hamish Shah was in my opinion the BEST this country has ever seen , so sad he was taken, way before his time, great player who i had the pleasure to have sat at the same table !! (not for long though )
This is how i remember Check in the Dark, there may be other explanation's of it.. but dont underestimate the use of it bye a player knowing 'the time of day' at Stud or Hold-em
glk benny
Obviously my friend had aces and the drunk dude had some raggy ace. Was rather funny!
