Was against the chip leader, and was second- 5 players left. I do think that if the river doesn't come 2 pair, the bet would have carried through- but should I have been getting involved at all? When the call came, I had no idea what he had- since he had a lot of chips. I figured it wasn't a high pair or AK since it may well have been reraised, so I was thinking KQ/KJ/QJ, 8's or worse or suited connector. When the board came I didn't really like the A at all, but I knew he liked to bet- so I waited to see what he did, and reraised. I'm confident at this time he hasn't got an A. Turn came a relative blank, so bet stronger- he called again, at which point I'm concerned since I think he's hit one of the smaller pairs, but I'm still sure he hasn't got an A- since that would probably be reraised. Then on the river my only option is allin or essentially pass the hand by checking, and he hit his 2nd pair.

Was this all a bad play, or was it acceptable play but at the wrong time?

I like the raise but when you get called if you dont hit IMO you have 2 choices all-in or check-fold I leave that to my instinct I am not a great player but that is how I would probably have played it!

I personally would raise less preflop.
I would c bet the flop, about 2/3 to 3/4 pot.
I would be called and would check/fold the turn and river.

As played, I dont understand why you check raised the flop when you are the original raiser. I guess it looks strong im not sure, but i dont like the min raise.

On the turn i think your bet looks weak, so i would bet more.

On the river i would just give up on the hand, cut my losses. All the straight draws get there and maybe he wont even fold his top pair/2 pair hands etc.
