I live in crawley 20 odd miles away from brighton, there is a new G casino there and they have rookie night poker tourny buy in £5+2 with unlimited re-buys and add on in first 90mins.
The thing is ive never ever played live before and im abit well very worried about making a fool outta myself I mean I dnt even know what way to deal the cards as ive never had to bother playing online.
Do i burn cards before laying the flop turn and river?.....I wanna play but I am actaully well worried im sure I will be fine but has anyoe else had these feeling lol I know it sounds silly and all!
Also very worried about my betting as people will actually see me so if I make a too bigger bet I will look silly. Man as im writing this im getting even more worrid!! gaaaargh might just leave it now and not go , just stick to onlineThanks in advance as any tips hints and views would be great.

First of all, I would stay away from that game and find a freezeout for about 30 odd quid.  £5 rebuys are absolutely insane.  PPl dont look at their cards , just all in every hand.  I saw some one havin abouut 20 rebuys early on.  You will hate it mate.

Most casinos Ive been to are dealer dealt and in the ones where the players deal, someone will usually volunteer and do all the dealing.  I can deal, but I can never be a r sed so pretend I cant.  It bewilders me why ppl actually want to deal.  Maybe theyre dealing from the bottom lol.

When betting count ur chips in ur hand first, and even ask the dealer if that is the amount you are intending to bet before putting them over the line.

Different casinos have different coulours for different denominations, so it can become confusing especially when they are well worn and you cant read the value of them anymore.

Tbh, I reckon I do the whole tasbles heads in when I play live as Ive usually had a few before it starts and always forget the chip values so am always asking.  But I dont care.

Yeah I probs wont be only one BUT what if there all not rookie sat live game and just think of it as a way of making easy money once or twice aweek eh i sure would for a quick 140£. Maybe im worrying about this too much as I do reslly wanna start plaing live to test if im actaully anygood or not and i feel i cant do this online.
Think ill give it a bash though mite aswell mite even get beginers luck......and ive got Team dohhhhhhh on the back of my poker points card for the casino, they also gave me a gold chaior wooop wooop!

This IS just like me soo I may not go down well with them! the reason im going for fiver buy-in is just to get a feel plus i dnt have like 30 to chuck away on a learning curve even though i fully understand what you.

I've never played live and would share the same anxieties. When I do I'll be asking what the chip denoms are, asking how much more the reraise is so I know how much to call or even try to calculate how much to raise by, asking how much is in the pot after every betting round etc..etc..etc lol. It's so much easier when it's on the screen infront of you And it would be much worse after a few scoops!

i would never ever play in a self deal tournie.  hate it so much.

i played one in my life.  £5 one at the G in Luton.  the guys at my table all had sunglasses on and 2 had full tilt t shirts.  most hilarious tournie ive ever been in my life, not just for the standard but also the constant BS that the other players at the table were talking.

if BR is a problem then just go to a dealer dealt tournie once/month rather than this joke once/week.

being a "rookie" night, i woulda thought there will be a lot of you in the same boat. just let everone know its your first time live, then tell them you have made a killing on line( dont want to come across as a complete fish) and just enjoy the night. no difference really, same cards same chips. just watch out for shakey hands and nervous eye contact. hope all goes well. phil

I think they all our till you get down to final table though? So i really dnt see why I have topay £2 fee ontop of £5

tell them u are new and can they help you out, i have never seen a new player not helped live if he admits it early
dont tell them about online play, just say u are learning or something, then they will go easy

Hi Kunster, dont worry about being new to live play. Everybody has that experience.
This will almost certainly be a self dealt table, but again dont worry. In Brighton there are a lot of regular players that sit at these low buy in tables, as there will also be new players, again dont worry about that, they will all be freindly. What I would say is, go just for the experience, as you have to start somewhere if you want to play live.
A re-buy tournament will be a bingo game for the first hour and believe me in Brighton it is, so be prepared to go all in or fold. Limit yourself to how many buy ins you are prepared to lose and stick to it, if you have done your limit within the hour then so be it, get up and watch the rest play out.
As for dealing and playing just play your normal game as you would online, other players will talk a lot at the table, if you dont want to talk to them just ignore them, likewise if you want to banter with them then do so, it will be fun either way. Try not to get intimidated by other players, if you find you are then just sit out for a while, go an have a smoke or something.
Any way go just for the experience. I am sure you will enjoy it.
When are you going and how are you getting there? I might come with you

"moro night mate, my mates driving if we go it will be at bout 5pm get dwn there for 5:30 play low level blackjack £2 minium bet till 7 when it goes up to £5. Tourny starts at 8pm I think. all depends on if my mate finshes at 4pm or not. I will know in the morning.

I know you say you cant chuck £30 on a learning curve, but you are gonna have to be prepared to have getting close to that in rebuys.  You could get AA first hand and open shove.  You could get called in 5 or 6 places, im serious.  If they hold then happy days but its very likely they wont.

As has already been stated by MrWh1te, just let the table know you're new to this, and ask what the protocols about burning cards are, etc. I've never sat at a live table where people have been snooty or judgmental when this happens. In fact, most people are more than willing to slow the game down a bit and explain. If anything, it helps break the ice, as there's usually someone else at the table who's grateful someone else has asked.

For example, some people are quite insistent that in self-dealt games, the dealer passes the deck to the person on the left to shuffle... and then back past the dealer to the person on the right, who cuts the deck on top of the Postillion (the plastic card that prevents anyone seeing the base card). So all the dealer does... is deal. But this varies from venue to venue, so it's highly advisable to ask questions, even when you're confident!

If I were you, I'd be going to something more informal first, just to get into the rhythm. Perhaps hold your own home game, or start off at a pub tournament... Redtooth hold lots of these, and they're very welcoming, cheap and low-key.

If you're prepared to come to London, then the choice is mind blowing. Bubble do a circuit on the London pubs which is really, really friendly, and stupidly cheap (£8 Freezouts). Do a Google search for more details, or PM me if you like.

I also agree with going to a dealer-dealt game; it's much easier, and you'll have enough on your plate keeping tabs on position and bet-sizing (especially when you're not looking top-down on the table, and the pot size isn't spelt out for you).

Self dealt games are a little bit tiresome, but if you're attending one, just practice shuffling first, and watch a couple of You Tube clips for hints. Nobody is expecting you to be a magician with the cards; just competent. It's also worth asking if anyone at the table is prepared to act as dealer on behalf of the table. If you're successful in this... try not to bust the dealer out too quickly...

From where you are, Croydon isn't too much of a shlepp, and The Big Slick is a pretty good card room. Let me know if you're intending to go and I might pop along with you.

One final challenge I'll offer: If you get dealt pocket aces, I defy you to cut your chips out – and place them across the line – without letting the other players see your hands trembling. It's nigh on impossible.

Most of all, have a beer, relax and enjoy the banter. Nothing beats a live game with good company. If you love online, you're going to go absolutely scatty over live. Best of luck.

Again wow thanks soo much, I decided to give it a go and at the end of the day its the only way im goign to learn, I also know this will be a shove fest so im just gunna play prem hands for first hour then see what haqppens. Im sure all the players on the table wont mind im new to live ( keep forgetting poker players are a nice bunch) im surew they wil be willing to help me out i hear top prize is ysally around 14 and top 4 5 are paid i believe. Also found out today that from 6:30 till 7:30 they teach poker live for free so mite sit in and see what they say.....and its free also witch is better.
Thanks for ur help im going down there early at around 4pm have a few jars and play low stakes blackjack and if that goes well mite sack pooker off and get hammered lol

WOW WHAT A NOGHT I MADE FINAL TABLE, was chip leader at final table ended up losing bit piot had 5k behind me blinds 400 800 i shove with qj get called he has 44 ...guess what hits trip 4s on flop i only make 2 pair...........but daaamn first live even and final table finished 6th needed to finish 3rd for £70 dammmmn did i do the right thing after he raised to 2500 before flop>?
its a race right he got lucky.............i think i did the right thing

so the best hand preflop won. I'd prefer to open the betting with a shove with QJ. Probably a better spot to
get them in with.

Glad you enjoyed it. He's never folding to your shove if he's raised to 2500.It's a race and he's ahead preflop, so the best hand preflop won. I'd prefer to open the betting with a shove with QJ. Probably a better spot to get them in with.

all a learning cuve me thinks though, started at 8pm the time of my shove was around 12:20am LOOOOOONG lol not used to playing that long atall hence why I was chip leader and lost mosta my chips due to being bord lol....will defo be up there next tuesday....anyone know if I can get the results up on internet they took my name and said they will be up?
