Theo Walcott right or wrong decision?

Some of the media are suggesting that it was wrong to leave out Theo what do you think?
In my opinion yes he has great pace but he doesn't have good games on a consistent enough basis! We have enough players who can play out wide in the squad and are far more versatile!
So for me Capello as got it spot on!

totally agree with you there donut.

what about Johnson? i'd have taken him. great left foot and really adds something different. i really don't fancy Lenon, or Phillips on the left!
  • edited June 2010
I thought Adam Johnson was a certainty.

+1,Theo can run fast but has little ball control.(I THINK).

Johnson defo in front of Shaun S***e Phillips.

I feel he will be playing with Joe Cole or Stevie Gerrard out left depending on if Gareth Barry is fit or not! I must admit that I think Adam Johnson is defiantly the best natural left winger we have in this country and was unlucky not to make the cut!

you can all probably shoot me for this but i'm actually a fan of Stuart downing. he can be great and another left footer we currently don't have in the squad

I agree he can be good but again as you intimated a little inconsistent. That is why I think Joe Cole is the better option he is not a naturally a left sided player but he will always cause a constant threat!

Completely agree he should not be going and sooooo glad he chose shaun wright phillips. Yes hes fast but dosnt have the consistancy to cross the ball in and makes the runs and fluffs it up as soon as a bit of defencive pressure applied. He needs more time and experirience to get this right. Where as wrighty is fast and used to do the same by not being able to cross it in due to lack of experience but i feel hes had a few caps now and seasoned out a bit and from performances ive seen hes the man for the job, time will tell but i reckon hes one to watch out for hopefully and can see him even scoring a couple! he should play on the right not the left though!

walcott has not done anything this year but hesky i fall over more than a new born child in also strange one at least lennon can cross a ball this year but johnson should be there instead of phillips or cole not enough ball time for joe this year so when cappello says hes going to pick the form players hesky or bent , johnson or phillips/cole ummm think his brain has missed the plane

    Prediction....

8 of the 23 man England squad, wont even make it onto the pitch in South Africa.

    Big fuss about nothing.

Just a fun World Cup Holi-bob for alot of em

In the case of Heskey or Bent it had to be Heskey because we needed a second forward that could hold the ball up front (the other being Crouch) but in my imo on form Zamora should have made the squad and possibly going to S.A. The point about Joe Cole not getting enough play time is a valid one but I feel he adds to much to the England squad to leave him at home! Johnson or Wright-Philips is a more difficult one the only thing I can think of their he as gone for a little more experience and I feel that if we are 1 up late in a game Wright-Philips is good at harassing the opposition when they have the ball.

You have a point but any one of the players could be called upon in the case of injuries and suspensions so its important to have the correct replacements!

    BANG!!!!!!!

I agree with most of his decisions, Walcott doesnt deserve to be there 4 goals in 30 games for arseanl this season ok 15 of them were subs but still and his crossing and decision making is pathetic.

Also agree that johson shouldnt have gone, ok hes done ok against hull city, wigan and burnley (no offence) but if you wathced him play any of the "top teams" he hasnt been in the game, he doenst have the experience and imo rightly dropped.

The only decision that slighlty surprised me was warnock over baines, neither are international qulaity just hope cole keeps fit.

I would have taken Walcott, he has a knack of scoring at international level which would mean we didn't have to rely on Rooney so much.

fast players with a good shot always do well in world cups too.

I personally think that Warnock is a more solid defender than Baines but neither are a patch on Cole.

    Baines was homesick

Dohhhhhhh makes a brilliant point if you think about it. People could post their predicted starting XI`s on here and be pretty much on the button. Unless there is a raft of injuries, the team wont be changing a great deal. After a shortage of strikers being picked in 2006 then Michael Owen getting injured...I think there is a valid argument to pick 6 or 7 strikers in a 23 man squad.

I think Bent deserves his place but he does not really fit into the team so i would not take him , as against the better teams like spain etc we are going to have to play a 3-5-1 otherwise we will be completely dominated in midfield, with players like Heskey we have multible options as he can play up top on his own and we can drop Rooney back in midfield.

Also Dofoe and Bent are similar players so i think we could only choose one of them, Dofoe has more international experience and is rated as the higher player which is probably why Capello went for him.

All the other choices were pretty close imo:

    Walcott/Johnson/Phillips
    Carrick/Parker/Huddlestone
    Warnock/Baines
Upson/Dawson (i would of probably gone for Dawson though as he has had the better season and Upson has not played that well for England in recent games.)

I still can`t believe Heskey is going and i`m a life long Leicester
supporter so slightly biased towards him.
Surely Bent,Zamora or even his own team mate Abomnabull
should have been picked ahead of him.
In fact i think my mum could do a better job.

I HOPE I`M WRONG ON THAT,but we will see.
  • edited June 2010
wrong theo pace and his abiltty to play upfront aswell when in q/f and rooney gets sent off at 0-0 and as we know cant win on pens we will miss him
  • edited June 2010
Heskey is drastically undervalued too often. He won't score many (probably none) and is a complete donkey in terms of shooting and passing even. What he does give is an immense physical presence up front that NO one in the England squad can give- Rooney has the strength but not the height, Crouch has the height but not the strength, Bent/Defoe etc have neither. Heskey gives us that option to make defenders jobs an absolute nightmare because they can't cope with his power, and that gives Rooney a lot more freedom. Like him or hate him, I think he is a perfect strike partner to allow Rooney to do his damage.

Playing two short strikers is suicidal, since you have no options if you can't play through a team, and let's be realistic- even if England manage to play their way through some of the time, we're kidding ourselves if we think it'll happen all the time. At some point we WILL have to resort to route one football, and without Heskey we simply don't have that option I think.
  • edited June 2010
I agree that England will have to play route 1 football sooner or later, and i know Heskey looks like he could intimidate people, but surely by now other teams have seen him play and know how to defend against him.
He looks powerful, but i have seen him play from when he was a sprog.
He looked like he was going to be a fantastic player, but just never progressed like you thought he was going to.
He can be pushed of the ball way to easily for his size and that is supposed to be his main strength.
I hope he proves me wrong as i thought he was going to be the dogs when younger at Leicester, but he seems to have stood still instead of improving with age.
ALL THE BEST EMILY,and kick those foreign bums where it hurts.
    Lots of love Steve....
