Getting good at poker?

edited August 2010 in Poker Chat
Unlike chess you dont always get punished for your mistakes and you often get rewarded for bad play! Also good play is often punished so it makes it much harder to learn how to be good.
If its so hard to learn from your mistakes how do the top 5% become so good? Whats their secret?
If it was just a case of learning a formula there would be far more profitable players.
Personly I feel I have too break some poker "rules" against better players and risk being frowned upon just to mix up my game. Where as I would more likelly to play more conventional poker against what I would call more average players.
To me the best way to play poker is to take notice of what the others are doing and adjust, then pray you get your timing right. I feel if I could take my own advise instead of being to agro to early I would be a better player.
