had a "debate" with a player at the table yesterday about ak (suited) v aq (suited) obv different suits :-). the player in question hit his queen and  won the showdown. i said ul to the other player as this has happened to me on a few occasions . the first play told me this was not as uncommon as you think and said aq would win 23% of the time. cant see how this can be. surley both players having suited cards nullifies the odds on a flush, same odds on hitting a straight( guessing a bit here!!), surley he only has 3 qs to aim at, at that isnt 23%( again guessing a bit) could someone give me exact odds on this please 1v1 pre flop. dont wont to eat humble pie,  but will if wrong. beat him into 2nd place in tourny so not that fussed as i got his money anyway!!

Just had a quick look at a poker calc, and its 69.16% v 26.61% and 4.23% split pot

im no maths genious but i think AQ has a better chance of hitting the straight than an AK, my thinking is, you can only hit straight with 10-J-Q community cards with AK, however with AQ you could hit 10-J-K or 8-9-10-J, its not much better odds but i think it is a small bit? As for the overall odds, when this sort of hand comes up on the TV tournies, the odds shown are about 70%/26% and 4% split pre flop (i think)

  The general rule on the odds are with one live card the odds are about 70/30. This works for AK vs AQ and also KK vs A7.  The only time there will be any variation to this would be if 1 hand is suited and the other is not which will shift the balance slightly but not much but in the case of both being suited then the odds will stay the same.

  This is not totally accurate in th percentage marks but i just remember typical showdowns and there rough percentages to give me guidelines to where i stand.

and this is why I much prefer to see a flop when I play rather than get it all in preflop. I can get my chips in dominating the oppo and lose 1 in 4 times, dont like those odds especially in a mtt. (This is why sometimes you will see me flat call raises with things like AK,AQ pre, opponent dependant)

I see it as a 70/30, slightly less but 70/30 is close enough
