Use of position

edited August 2010 in The Poker Clinic
Just a small article about the use of position in omaha as compared to NLHE.

If you are on the button in NLHE you can raise preflop knowing you will have position and the betting lead but this does not translate quite so well to omaha because betting lead is worth nothing. Betting into the preflop aggressor(or donk betting) is very common post flop in omaha because of the need to bet big draws or protect hands like top set.

The main use of position in omaha is pot control. Not the ability to steal pots when no action comes before you.

Imagine the identical scenarios of 4 way to the flop in an unraised flop and it checks round to the button in both NLHE and omaha.

In NLHE a strong bet by the button will be called by at most 1 other and possibly get through uncontested.Whereas in omaha a strong bet by the button will most likely be called by 2 or even 3 of the opponents due to the increased chances of them having a piece of the flop.

Whilst playing omaha in this scenario our action should depend on our hand and whether we wish to retain pot control or let the pot size spiral out of control. Bluffing in this situation is pointless and very expensive. So just remember to leave your button steals for NLHE
