Luck v skill

Following on from dohhhhhhs post "are you a loser or a winner", I would be interested to know what percentage you believe NL holdem is luck and what percentage is skill ?

As a loser I would say 20% skill - 80% luck.

Im sure winners might think differently ?!!!!

   IMO the skill in poker is making sure you have got some chips when its your turn to get lucky.

this week/months results are alot to do with luck. poker is alot to do with skill.

there is a large skill element-- especially in deep stack tournaments--- I'd say around 70/30--- some people hardly ever cash, and some cash very often--- in a long game, the skill factor is much more important than the luck---a few deep stack players have a ROI over 35 % over a few thousand games, so no way is it all luck in these games

With regard to cash and stt's: With good BR management skill will always overcome the varience (good luck/bad luck).

Mtt's, particularly large field mtt's, are somewhat different: Winning an mtt without some luck is unlikely because mtt's are a do or die scenario played over and over. Winning an mtt without some degree of skill is very possible, but the chances of repeating that are very slim indeed. Repeatedly cashing and winning mtt's requires a large degree of skill with the added bit of luck.

Putting a percentage of luck or skill to this question is nigh on impossible except to say that for consistent winning players the degree of skill must be above average.

*(There are exceptions to the above but Phil is on holiday and it wouldn't be fair to mention it in his absence.)

the skill in online poker is timing and you need a chunk of luck at least 70%  online seems to have a lot more big against bigger hands

In my opinion its luck what cards you get but the skill is your bet sizes, reading your opponents and knowing when to fold etc

Cris Ferguson once said that a good tourny player can exspect to win 1-30  who am I to argue with him , thats why when I see the same names winning the same tournies again and again it does make me wonder? Esp. when ive taken money from them at normal tables and seen nothing special n their play . I wonder how Tikay would put his odds at winning a bracelet in the uk and Ireland poker tour next season if he completed in all of them . Mybe SKY should sponcer their most seasoned pro then we could all follow  his results and play.

i totally agree you dont see ivey ferguson or hansen make even 10% of wpt final tables so why is there about 10 sky poker players who always do in the sky tournies. they must be super duper good or the rest of us are just really bad!!!!
