Set over set...views please

edited September 2010 in The Poker Clinic
Hi, first time poster so bear with me if I get a few things wrong..

I was playing on the cash tables at the 5p/10p stakes its folded round to me I have 9's on the button and raise up the big blind 2 times to 30p the small blind folds but the big blind re raises me to 1.10 costing me another 80p to call which I do..at this point im putting the big blind on maybe an average pair or a strong ace.

The flop comes 2d 5d 9s so I flop the set, I check he then bets £2.65 which I call at this point im thinking about how im going to get the rest of my money in also still thinking his on a pair or big ace either way I believe even if he has 10's, Jacks, Queens or Kings I was ahead and I wasnt putting him on aces because I figure why would he bet on a non scary board surely he'd check to trap me later on... I guess the 2 diamonds made a difference.
The turn card comes the Ace of diamonds and he pushes putting me all in if I call for my remaining £10 I thought maybe he'd just made his flush but call anyway as I figure I've got outs..I know maybe I should have folded but I had the set and most people probably couldnt lay it down in my situation.
He turns over aces and the rivers a blank...

What I would like to know is...should I have folded on the turn or was this just an out and out cooler.

Should be noted that I know had I re raised him all in on the flop or pre flop the end result would have been the same.

Thanks

i would gone all-in after flop and put the pressure on them, if they call and hit so be it, but they would be thinking about it and a good chance they might fold, all depends on what cash they had behind them ?

He had £25/26 before the making the pre flop raise.

I considered shoving the flop but didnt want to scare him off as I figured the board may well have completely missed him and maybe his post flop bet was an attempt to take down an uncosted pot maybe putting me on a similar hand to the one I had him on.

    Thanks for your views...much appreciated

i agree with spornybol, i would also make him pay to see turn card especially as there is risk of flush. Hard to shake a lot of people when they have overpair to the flop and to be fair sometimes you want them to stay in as vice versa.

Yeah maybe thinking about it now I should have pushed and got my money in good either way I doubt his laying down the aces.

Once I saw the set of aces I didnt reload and left it for the night so at least I didnt tilt even though I was pretty disappointed with the way it went I know I was a mile behind pre flop miles ahead post flop and dead to a one outter on the river..I also know that most times the ace doesnt appear and my hand holds up.

    Raise flop.

Neither of you can get off this though. Cooler

What you have done on this hand is made a mistake that we all make and that is to slow play your big hands and then give yourself a tough decision on later streets.

Preflop play is fine as you give yourself the chance to get away cheaply if you miss which you will most of the time.

On the flop you have the nuts, and at this point you are 2 to 1 favourite against a flush draw(with redraw potential) and 9 to 1 favourite against an overpair and have a virtual lockdown against AK AQ type hands. This is the point where you need to be raising to either take the pot here and now or to build the pot up to make it more worthwhile.

On the turn all possible draws have come in including an unlikely 34 play.At this point you are convinced you are behind but with outs. If you are behind to the flush then you have 10 outs making you about 4 to 1 underdog to win and you were being offered pot odds of less than 2 to 1.As it was unless one of your nines was the diamond then you were about 2.2% to win the hand.

As it was if you had have shoved the flop he would have snap called and binked. But if you had made youe move then you would have been all in as a 90% favourite and not calling all-in hoping you were good or hoping to get lucky.

You were always going to lose your stack with the way the cards came out but i think you would have been much better off doing so on your terms on the flop rather than on his terms when you are unsure of where you are in the hand.

yes i got away with it, but did learn my lesson from this one, no more limping, as you see behind b4 flop in front on flop behind on turn and donked river

    Wow..

In hignsight I could have gotten away from it on the turn but yeah my pre flop and post flop wasnt very good not so much the pre flop because I only had 2 players in the SB and BB to get through and maybe if I thought my 9's were good pre flop shouldnt have called the raise of 1.10 and re popped it but just calling on the flop wasnt great the 2 diamonds didnt really scare me because surely he'd want to see a free turn card but I should have realised by his c bet that he was pretty comitted to the hand and I should have re raised him all in..like the previous post stated I would have been pushing not calling and at least then he had the decision not me.

Once the Ace came I figured if he is on a big ace as I thought he may have been I no longer had to trap him because he'd hang himself with his aggression.
In the future I wont be flat calling when I hit a hand like that or maybe I'll have to adjust if the player tightens up after the flop.
