4nl

edited October 2010 in Area 51
Yo!

Just did half an hour playing 3 tables this morning. Quite boring stuff, but made 250xbb playing strong stuff, keeping pots small, playing position, not taking any risks, then winning the 1 big pot when it came along.

Gone thru a few hands below, not neccesserily the biggest, just ones that might help ur thought process in most hands.

1) Raise the button - bloke has been loose, calling alot, hardly raising, trying to play a
 pot with him in position.

Flop - donk bets, which is normally weak, so raise to get some money in and charge flush draws.
He calls quick - so he either has a jack, 2nd pair, or a flush draw.

Turn - slow down just to control the pot, If he has the flush draw, he's still odds against to hit, so check behind, and see what he does on the river. It also pairs the 8, so I can't beat him if he had top pair, or 2nd pair on the flop. Pot control is fine here.

River - When he checks, I know he has a weak pair or probably a missed flush draw. It obviously brings the straight for me, but even if it didn't I would bet for value.

2)

Small hand, pump it up pre with AK, the flop gives us 2 overs and a gut-shot. No need to c bet here as the guy like most at 4nl loves to call, but rarely bets, so every chance of getting a free card here.

Turn brings the nut flush draw, again, if I had position, I would probably bet this if checked to me, but out of position I prefer to check, and call if he bets. Just controlling the pot, and I probably still have the best hand anyway - turned out that I did.

Only a small pot, but if you try and get too fancy, or play technically correct stuff I guess you should c bet here, but no need to get yourself in a hole out of position at this level.

3)

Suited connectors getting great odds to call pre flop.

Flop a 5 high flush draw on a paired board, nothing to shout about. Really weak bet makes it easy for me to call.

Turn a straight draw to go with it. It's a hidden straight draw, and again, they bet tiny, begging me to call.

River, I get there - happy days. No need to mess about value betting here, or check raising. These guys love to call, my hand is disguised, villain probably has me on a flush draw, go ahead and put him all in, get full value for my hand. Easy game, (If I miss the river, just check/fold - having lost hardly anything)

4) Just one of those annoying hands, raised strong pre, bet strong on the flop with top pair top kicker, the guy obv never folds the flop once he has called pre. Money in good, pretty standard stuff, just ul, reload.

5) This player had been really tight. I wouldn't normally c bet here as the flop has missed me. I raise with more hands because the big blind has been surrendering his big blind quite easily (had notes).

Once he calls, I put him on a tight range of pairs and high cards, so Im beting on the flop, that he hasn't hit. And he just folds. Easy money (do it again next time)

6) This is the 1 big hand I played.

Pre flop, with all the limpers, I have the button on a really passive table. I believe that if I raise here, regardless of the flop, all the players will check to me, as I took the lead pre. Therefore raising effectively gives me a 4 card flop (as I can just check and take a free card) I have the button so I'm in control of the pot against a load of weak players.

The hand, 78 suited is gonna flop good alot, with straight draws, flush draws, back-door draws.

Flop - not great, Ive caught abit of it, but nothing to get excited about. Continuation betting here would be so bad, as people will call with better pairs, and draws. Ive pretty much given up on the hand, but they all check to me.

Turn gives me 2 pair, but puts a 1 card straight out. Again, Im done with the hand, unless I get a good price and good implied odds to fish for my full house. - Due to them being ridiculously passive, I get another free card, and get there on the river.

River - Bingo! they've let me get there! (power/respect of a pre flop raise?) - And someone value bets into me. Im obviously never folding here, my aim is to get as much money in as possible. When the action got to me, I instantly set my bet size to all in. I then realised the guy had a 200xbb stack, so even at this level, might fold putting me on a full house. I decide to go for strong value, an not give people with a 10 in their hand the chance to get away.

I think the guy with 5-6 would have raised before the action got to me if he had a 10 - so I go to value town and he makes a shocking call.

Point of this hand is I got in to see 5 cards with 7-8 suited, for 24p (6xbb) and I can get away from the hand at any point, quite easily. Its a simple hand to play, as long as you don't get carried away with 2 pairs on a scary board.
Get the nuts, then bet it!!

    nice one m8
a quick question though, on a discussion i'd done in the clinic i had AJ off about 2nd to act and raised to 12p pre flop. you advised raising to 80p. In the above hands the largest you've done with an ace is 24p. Is this you just tailoring the rises to the table as larger raises previously got no takers? not a criticism (who am i to do so at my level!) just trying to understand.

Hey, I've just re-read the post and maybe some of my thoughts wud be hard to understand. - Trying to help a sky poker player beat 4nl, so thought I'd try abit and post some hands to talk to him about.

In your hand in the clinic (if it's the one I commented on last night?) my quote was about your raise size on the flop, rather than pre flop.

Your pre flop play was fine, but when he bet 20p on the flop, you raised it to 40. I would be going for as much value as I can get there, get the money in......

Was playing this earlier and was suprised to see oynutter and mickjenn playing at these levels.

I know he,s rolled for it but for some reason mickjenn was going all in on most hands pre-flop - 9,10 off , Q 7 off etc.

I know you don,t  normally play at these levels either dohhhh, so was just wondering why all off a sudden  these top players (in my humble opinion)  are trying at NL4?

Can't speak for them, but I've seen it happen a few times at a few sites, and normally its just a high limit player having a laugh. I personally don't like it, as the players playing those limits are more often than not trying to increase their bankrolls playing the low limits, so while a high stake player cares nothing dumping a few buyins at those levels just shoving all in over and over it can sck for the players at those levels if they get a number of badbeats when calling with the better hands, which can of course happen.

Still, this may not be what was going on, but I've certainly seen very high stake players doing this at low limits before on other sites. Often drink related, or so bored and noones online playing at their normal levels, which is possible here at times I would think with the small player base.

If good players wanna play 4nl, it offers new challenges to the regs there, in terms of adapting to table, or even their table selection.

Personally, I was discussing nl4 strategy with a few people, so wanted to play abit to remind myself, and be able to offer better advice, as it's been a while since I played there regularly.
