TIP THE DEALER?

edited November 2010 in Poker Chat
I have recently started playing live cash. What is everyones thoughts on tipping the dealers. Do you have to? Is it expected? The dealers at my casino are generally very bad and some even get annoyed if you don't tip.

Without this becoming a debate on tipping in life generally what does everyone think?

i play live nlh alot and only once have i seen the dealer get a tip.. and this was 2k pot

a7 hearts v 10 9 hearts on a 8h jh rag ra(h) board.. all the money went in on the turn and the guy was drawing to a 1 outter - queen of hearts... he said for a laugh " if u give me the q of hearts i will give you £100... it came and he did!!

generally tho i do not like tipping people to do their job... i think i would in us tho as even people who open your taxi door expect a tip

    U gotta be jokin!!!

Never been to a casino, but if I did, they wudnt get a penny! THEY GET PAID TO DO WHAT THEY DO!!!

u tight fracker dohhhh!! if the dealer gives me the 1/2/3 outer i will give him a tip, otherwise deal on my friend!

I tip.. But only when I win... and then I'm so excited I over tip. Apparently £50 max for a £1000-£3000 cash is enough (I tipped between £50 and £150 for my wins) if second place is a decent enough cash or it's chopped, I'll also tip.

I consider it a donation to the poker Gods.

But it's completely personal.. It's like any service. I've been a waiter/bartender etc so I know how easy it is to be friendly and polite. If I get bad service I won't tip. End of. No excuse for bad manners IMO.

EDIT.. ah just reread. the LIVE CASH part.. OOPS.

Neil Channing stopped tipping at the Vic when he worked out what percentage it was costing him in relation to rake. I think he decided to just put X amount aside and give it as a fund to the dealers at christmas. I think it's situation dependant (isn't everything in poker lol) but generally i tip someone for doing a good job, above the norm. Average is worth the wage they are paid so it has to be above and beyond. If a dealer is involved in the banter at the table, keeps the mood fun and light, then yeah i'll tip. I once had a table fumming after refusing to tip after a good session because the dealer was a miserable so and so who had also mucked my cards when they were still live. In my eyes he didn't deserve and didn't get!

There used to be no point tipping in the Vic because the poker room tips got spread out throughout the casino/Grosvenor and barely went to the poker room at all so it was pointless.

I tip a quid a pot per every 2 or 3 I win (so never lol).

I'll tip for exceptional service, but their isn't really much room for exceptional service in dealing.

The dealer is either doing everything properly - what they're paid for; or they're doing a bad job.

There aren't really any 'extra' things a dealer could do which deserve a tip which they shouldn't already be doing.

And the only way it's down to the dealer when they deal you a 1/2/3 outer is if they've stacked the deck for you - and I don't think anybody really wants that do they.

If you're going to randomly give away your money any time you get a bit more extra cash than expected you're better off pooling it and occasionally making a donation to charity.

On from Beloveds post, I am more likely to tip if the dealer does his job. And I don't mean deal the cards but if they do something like speed up the game/request the floor correctly/ take control of a mistake/ warn people appropriately or act professionally in a tough situation I will tip more than if I won a pot.

it has got to be right to tip the dealer when you win a nice big juicy pot surely.

I tip in vegas when i win a pot but its expected, over here like beaneh says if the dealer has total control of the table banter and flow of the game and ther's a good atmosphere then i will tip at the end of my session (unless involved winning a huge pot during session, when i may tip after that pot).

i tip before i sit down and take it back if he deals me dirt
  • edited November 2010
i normally round my stack down to nearest £5 or £10 at en of night and tip that, or if i win a big pot 1 or 2 bbs.

Tipping dealers is something i massivley disagree with in poker id never do it. It encourages a strong dealer to make you win (ok good for me) but id rather win honestly

    In what sense?

    What makes it politeness?

Is it polite to tip your newsagent if you win money on a lottery scratchcard? or the programmers if you win on Sky Vegas?

Are there any other people you tip for just doing there jobs? or is it just poker dealers?

I voted no, but I still tip, if most of the table do.  I was at a casino a few weeks ago, and the dealer wasnt casino staff.  This happens regularly, one of the players nominate themselves to deal, and the session charges are cheaper.  I would prefer to pay more to get a dealer, buts thats how it was.
This one night, the member of public dealing, wasnt even playing, so he must have been solely relying on tips, and if you forgot to tip, there would be hints around the table to do so.  I wasnt keen on that tbh.

In general we Tip minimum wage earners who carry out their job with pride and service beyond the value of the remuneration they recieve by the employer. It's the personal touch of the Dealer/Employee that dictates if i tip because if i earned a fiver an hour i'm not sure i could raise a smile but some people deliver whatever the wage

OK, so you tip based on earnings, if the street cleaners near where you live carry out their job with pride and service beyond the value of their renumeration - do they get a tip?

How do you know if if it's beyond the value of their renumeration? Do you ask them beforehand? Maybe get them to fill in a little questionnaire?

Not that it's relevant anyway - your pay is the value of your job; some people can do the bare minimum needed for their job and some can do really well; but that's what pay rises are for.

If you have a job where you're not getting rewarded with pay rises for how well you're doing then you should move to a different employer; if no employer will pay you more - it almost certainly means your job isn't worth as much as you think it is but you still have the choice to move jobs completely.

Whatever happens it's an individuals own responsibility, not their customers or clients or customers/clients of their employers.

For what it's worth - very few dealers in licensed premises get paid minimum wage.
There are obviously differences, particularly regional one's.
When I've looked through industry recruitment before, the average dealer tends to get paid about the same as the average bank clerk. Whenever you've done something over the counter at a bank before - did you leave a tip?

I tip if its over 50bb pot.  Standard is 1bb.  If its something sick like 500bb I'll throw them 25.

I do think its pretty wrong how casinos share the tips between the management as well as the floor staff, who are all on minimum wage or thereabouts.

I was once in the vic and had won like a 500 quid pot.  I chuck the dealer a couple of quid and he mutters something like 'a pot that big is usually worth a tenner'.  I had my iPod in one ear and was rebuilding my stack so I pretended not to hear.

Couple of hands later there are a couple of limpers and I make a standard raise.  I take down the 7 quid pot and chuck him it all and say I'll decide when to tip and by how much.  He looked kinda embarrased.

I do play at a local poker club tho and the delaers there rely soley on tips so I make sure I tip a bit extra there cos they're nice guys as well and do a very good job....

kinda tough this one ...... but ive played dtd where i consider the rake a tad too high but i will chuck a quid now and the to the dealer....... a recent trip to egypt i played live cash in sharm....... and i thought dtd was a big rake... the rake there was 10% with no cap !!! needless to say the dealer got sweet fa.......... my local grovs we pay for a dealer  £5per hour per player and i will tip every winning hand as long as they deal to a good standard (as beaneh says)......

    Cheers for your thoughts everyone.

The Neil Channing situation summed it up nicely. Especially when you consider at my casino the rake is 10%, the dealers are poor and occasionally rude, not all but some.

    No.

I'm going to presume you missed the Phrase "In General" lol

I don't tip everyone but when i do the reasons given in my other post are why i do, from your responses i arrive at the conclusion you don't tip?. Thats fine because tipping is a very personal thing as are the reasons behind it. Some people do it because they feel it's expected, some people wait to see if service is exceptional, others have their own reasons.
