Hi Jacko - yes Gus Hansens book was one of my first reads too.  I also found the Harrington on cash series a great help.

    Hi Jacko.

    I'd recommend Harrington's mate.

Many, including our own poker genius Tikay, have admitted to have never haven't read a poker book.

That's a fair opinion and quite some of the Sky Poker Team's players have said the same.

There's no truths in poker Jacko, but my personal opinion is, that Harrington's nead to be read. Especially if you're just starting out. Harrington's books are somewhat out of date considering the uber aggressive game that's played now -a-days, but I consider him second to none in teching you how to THINK about the game. Read with caution, but definitely read.

Hansen's book is brilliant but I'd advocate Harrington's style over his a million times unless you know what you're doing. Gus Hansen is, without doubt, poker genius. But his post-flop play ain't as easy as it sounds. Trust me, I've tried.

Devilfish's book is good too. I'd strongly suggest not trying to live life his way though :-)

Poker is based on probability and psychology - the maths never changes, only the part concerned with peoples behaviour.

The problem a lot of people get from poker books is they think too specifically about how it's telling them to play.

e.g. If an example gives the idea of betting half the pot in a scenario, then when that scenario comes up people bet half the pot.

But they should be looking at the underlying concept, just before the example is given in the book (or in the example itself) it will have said (if it was a decent book) the reason why you would bet half the pot here.

If the reason was that you want people to fold in this scenario, and the smallest amount needed to get them to fold is half a pot - then, the part people should take is that you should bet the smallest amount needed for them to fold - but as I explained, a lot of people just remember the half a pot side of it instead.

As for the books, SuperSystem 1 and 2 are really only useful for the other games in it. If you want to read about holdem then Harrington covers the same concepts - but written better.

For tournaments I'd say Harrington for the basics, Gus for ideas about how to incorporate a bit of flair into your game (not to play like him - that's hard - just occasionally to try it out :) ) - and then search online for more up to date ideas about how people are playing now.
