My first Deepstack....... Destroyed in first 1/4 hour!

edited November 2010 in The Poker Clinic
1. its unlikely he had AA/AK preflop because he called and didn't raise.
2. same as above for the flop.
3. he wouldn't suddenly jam blank turn if he was slow playing AA, and almost certaintly wouldn't jam as a bluff on the turn with AK.
4. I go broke with a set with 163BBs tbh... so i'd say unlucky.

Played my first £2.2 Deep Stack Tourny and lasted less than a roulette game!
Did I over play this hand or was it just poker?

I put him on Big pockets or suited Ace King.

just ul, no way I'm folding a set there

  • edited November 2010
Cooler mate - looks a dry board.

At the £2.20 level u will find that peeps cant fold so could well have 99 or similar. Most times in situations like this you will get paid - seen lots of peeps ship it all in here with A8!

Dont let it dishearten you - the £2.20 deepies are imo the best games of what resembles poker at the low stakes.

Ur gonna get the odd chancer having a bit of fun as its only a couple of quid mentalities, but generally most people seem to take these fairly seriously for a fun evening of poker - & thats what its all about innit?

Cheers guys, don't think I would fold it and can remember taken other guys when my trips beat theirs so my chin is still up.

Will just keep playing and learning.

It def. helps to look back over hands and work out what happened (when I started playing last year I would have gone straight to a cash table and shipped my br in 20 mins after a beat like that so guess I must be playing a bit better now!)

A little bit unlucky once you were in the pot. However.

If you want to do well in future deepies, you need to be sitting really tight for the first few levels and fold everything from pocket 8s down. Remember, you are in a deepstack not a race, there will be plenty of time to accumulate chips later on in the levels.

In this particular hand villains 5 x BB raise pre-flop this early in the tourny is screaming out pocket pair and to be honest as there is only one pocket pair lower than yours in the deck (22) you are always likely to be behind in this hand pre-flop.

Its not often you are going to hit the set on the flop, so my advice is steer clear of small pairs early on in these tourneys.

Good Luck....Hope to see you at the tables.

    Blimey Trev!!

    I'd say completely the opposite.

These are exactly the hands I like to play early in a deep-stacked game - as you win a massive pot, or lose a tiny one, unless you're extremely unlucky and run into a higher set.

I reckon if I'm dealt a pocket pair between 22 and 77 every hand of the tournament for the first hour, I would win it with my eyes closed.

(looks like you lost 1.8k of your stack prior to this hand within the first level? I reckon posting how that happened would be more beneficial to you, as this hand in the opening post is just a genuine cooler)

I agree with Dohhhhhh, call is perfectly fine pre and recommended with small pairs imo.

This hand is a standard stack off, cant be folding a set on that board imo

As played the hand is fine - what i'm saying is i'm folding pocket 3s pre-flop in the first hour and therefore wouldn't have been involved in the hand in the first place. Especially to a raise of 5 x BB pre.

5 x BB raise shouts out pocket pair and its unlikely my pocket 3s are gonna be ahead or hold up. however, having called and seen the flop, there was no getting away from it on this occasion.

Give me a cheap check or call any day of the week, but i'm not calling a 5 x BB raise with pocket 3s this early in a deepy thats all i'm saying.

Are you both sure you would call a 5 x BB with pocket 3s this early in a deepy knowing your likely to be going into the flop behind?

Yes in a multi way pot especially as the implied odds are massive

This is a rare example of set over set, but usually when u hit any set, you get paid big vs passive stations who who cant fold overpairs. usually results in a nice DU or a big pot.

if you miss your set, you fold and its only 100 chips out of 5000. so thats still 4900 left!

but if you win you have invested 100 to win a potential 3000+.   You hit your set 1 time in 7.5... im rubbish at maths, but the implied odds are clearly there innit.

Mmm most sites i have seen say if there is any big raise pre-flop first hour you fold all small pairs if you stick to this rule you would still be in never mind the raiser then folded. My tip sit tight first hour. we all have our own game play good luck m8ty

The loss before was a fold I had to make on the river, flopped two pair Tens and Jacks but could not get a chaser off the strt and flush draw he went all in on river after a king dropped to give strt and flush (made my 2 pair look very small) decided I could not call him that early and would have to wait for my next try...  Guess it just was not my tourny.
