Could I have waited?

edited December 2010 in The Poker Clinic
3rd Hour of deepie.  2 from Bubble I'm in 10th with 12 left.  Table has tightened up with everyone folding.  Think I can get the steal unless he has Ace or PP (maybe KQ or KJ).  I've not made many moves for the last hour so feel my image is okay (every hand they've seen of mine in that time has been legit).  I feel my move is okay and the villians is a little loose.  Main question is should I wait for 2 shorties to go out and then hope for some nice holds or should I always be trying the odd move like this?

    Hi

    I dont think its a question of waiting to make your move, rather the opponent you choose to take on at this time.
    With hindsight, the guy is not the type(from you explination)to put this down, even though his cards do not warrant the call.
    If you had let this hand pass you by, you would have had another orbit to pick a better spot and also give the other shorties a chance to bust out.

    your play here is 100% good

    There's a vid available for free (few of em) on pokertube, by a guy called "illegit"  - It's brilliant - really opened my eyes, go have a look.

    Both plays here are fine, the shove, and the call.

    Cheers guys.

    I'll check the vids out and hopefully get to final table in a deepie soon.  Invested a ton of hours so far so must be due that bubble soon.

    The guy calls off a third of his stack here on K9os here JJ.

    Sorry but i disagree that the call is ok - because of the amount of this stack. Ok yes so he was miles ahead but still long term the incorrect call imo.

    I think your shove is standard as you have to shove, but the call for me is awful, he's basically praying you have air, very unlucky not to have got your move through but make a note CALLS VERY LIGHT

    With 7 big blinds, you should be shoving here with any pair, any ace, any king, probably any queen, 10J, 9-J, 8-J, 7-J, 9-10s, 8-10s, 7-10s.....probably a few more hands.

    I reckon K9 is ahead of that range, and is plenty to make the call.

    I would have called anyway unless u have been playing super tight and not getting it in as often as you should.

    she said she was playing very tight, out of interest were do you get your calling range from?  risk-orientated?

    I agree with dohh I think its a call

        equity     win     tie           pots won     pots tied
    Hand 0:     47.769%      45.13%     02.64%         4719950244     276079350.00   { K9o }
    Hand 1:     52.231%      49.59%     02.64%         5186643888     276079350.00   { 22+, A2s+, K2s+, Q4s+, J7s+, A2o+, K2o+, Q7o+, J9o+ }

    fwiw my shoving range with 6bbs in the sb is going to be wider than this making it even more of a call, I think if you have to ask whether shoving with K6 is a good move in your position that you're playing wayyyy too tight.

    my shoving range blind on blind with 6bbs is any2, yes she is playing wayyyy to tight and i reckon k6 is at the bottom of her range here, but its by far not a mistake to call

    This is a good point.  Keep getting to top 15% and then seem to stack off on BB.  I've looked back over my hands and I have been letting Q7+ hands go.  Guess it's a knewbie thing of thinking your gonna get AA every time this deep in a Tourny so hold out.  I will make an effort to widen my shove range at this stage.

    Also, is 78suited etc a good shove hand? I often want to play them deep as your callers are coming in with Rag ace, K or Q so the suited connectors seem a viable shove hand to me?

    going down to 6.5 BBs is just to low if you do double up to13BBS you are still a low stack + that low you lose fold equity, i would suggest 10BBs should be your min before you start shoving and wouldn't disagree with anyone who shoves 15/20 BBs even more so on these short handed table mtts

    Just played a DYM and was in 4th (200) behind 3rd when the blind got high.  Started shoving with a wider range. Got most shoves through and the my K2 got called by Q9.  I Fh the flop.  End up finishing first (and we all played all the way).  I was def playing too tight b4!  Thanks guys
