2 omaha stack offs - shud I fold either?

edited December 2010 in The Poker Clinic

Had a dabble for abit of fun yest, think I may need to tighten up alot? - I seem to be happy to get it in with big draws, whereas more competent players always have at least a set, or top 2 and a big redraw etc etc .....

Am I stacking off too light?

hand 1 i'd fold pre.  only really looking for spades....would you limp A3ss in NLHE?
hand 2 is just a cooler.  had plenty of outs.  played fine IMO

    Hand 1 -
I would fold preflop, your hand isn't strong enough preflop to play UTG.
As played although I'm not folding on the flop I would keep the pot small with low trips. People are wary of a paired board and if you get action you are usually against a full house. The main problem with playing flops like these is that you can't improve to much more than a low full house and are usually dominated.

    Hand 2-
    Preflop fine.
Postflop, Looks ok. Typical omaha hand with a strong draw against a set. You're the wrong end of a 60/40 but you have too many outs to fold. Also if your opponent is doing this with 2 pair or a draw himself you are ahead.

hand 1) fold pre i like, only nut flush draw and AK not really a hand i would get involved in even a call
as played i would call flop bet then re-assess turn

hand 2)  good raise pre definately a raising hand pre, on that flop i would check/ call on face of it you only have 8 outs and thats max so would re-assess

seems you are a bit loose in omaha which is fine if your up for gamble, both these hands i would not have gone broke(not a brag just a point). its better to call your draws as opposed to raise unless you have moster draws imo otherwise you will just get into a raising war and like you say will get looked up by those with a set when you still havent made a hand

Most of the thoughts that have come to mind have already been said.

Hand 1. Fold pre it is complete junk. On the flop you should either be betting out or check calling. The check raise here should only be used if you had OESD or a wrap as well as your nut flushdraw.I would personally favour the check call to keep the pot low and enable you to hit your draw or get away cheaply.

Hand 2.Good starting hand and correct to raise pre.Without actually hitting that is as good a flop as you could get so you did the right thing by calling the raise and you were just unlucky not to end up winning.

So in a nutshell stop playing like you did in hand 1 and continue playing like you did in hand 2. And despite what young gun said you had 12 outs in hand 2 not 8( 13 if you count running diamonds). Preflop hand selection is a vital skill in omaha and the more nut drawing hands you have the more chance of hitting the flop you have and the more chance of winning.Hand 1 you had 2 and hand 2 you had 4. Try preflop limiting your range to 3+ and you will win more hands that you contest.
