Newcastle

edited January 2011 in The Sky Poker Tour
Hi

I qualified for Newcastle weeks ago but have still not had any official notification.  I did telephone and had it confirmed that I had won a seat (which obviously I knew) and was told it was Aspers and that they would contact someone to confirm the details which hasnt happened.

I would have thought a courtesy e mail with details would have been sent when you win a seat.

I have now come onto the forum and see it starts at 2pm do I have register before a certain time?

I see on here that people have booked hotels etc which I havent yet done as was waiting for details to arrive and also need to book a flight if I can get one as well.

Has anyone else had any details sent to them or am I the only one left out?

Thanks

Debs

If you look in the Lobby at all Tournaments you will see you are registered in the SPT Newcastle - CLICK HERE

The usual way these work is they kick off at 2pm on Saturday but arrival at midday is recommended.  A lot of players arrive Friday evening to play the house tourny and meet up with fellow players.

I haven't received an info email yet either and usually about now an Official SPT thread will appear in this section of the forum with all the necessary details.

I just checked and in July the SPT email came 2 days before the event.

Thank you for the info.  I think I had better start making arrangements.

I would have liked to have come up on the Friday but have family commitments so fingers crossed I can still get a flight saturday am.

I still think a courtesy e mail would be in order from Sky when you win a seat with some basic details.  Not everybody is in the know on what is going on or how things work.  Lesson learnt for the next time lol.

    Thanks again

    Hi Debs

You do get a courtesy email about a week before the event, also joining instructions get posted on here as well.

I was at Newcastle last year so can vouch for a great casino, lively Friday night before and very well organised Saturday with plenty of Sit and Go's if you get knocked out of main event.

Main event starts at 2pm but you can sit down later of course, if you don't have an Aspire card then bring some photo ID (passport, driv lic), Aspers is in central Newcastle, easy walk from station etc.

Keep your eye on here for any more info

    Hi Debs,

When you get to Newcastle, ask someone where The Gate is and when you get there go up the escalator to the casino, most of the regulars will be around or near the bar, so dont be shy, come and say hello.

    Hi Brit,
All the seats have gone already, but there are usually a few people who cant turn up for whatever reason and if that is the case there is normally a shootout satelitte on the day. Sometimes though, they let people buy in for the full amount if there is not enough to cover a satelitte. Alternates have been allowed at the last one, so i would imagine that this will be the case this time round, that would cost £110(the full cost) and only last the first or second levels.
Even if you cant get into the main event, it is a great day with sit n gos throughout the day(these are normally more fun than the ME).

Am I the only that thinks having the Newcastle event in the winter is unwise? They should have the Newcastle event when its warmer as most people will be travelling quite far North (much longer journeys than they usually do for SPT events), where the weather is much worse than elsewhere in the UK, and conditions often treacherous (Much of the UK transport network was brought to a standstill by winter weather only a week ago, at a time of year when the weather is supposed to be better than it is in January. This included the closure of Newcastle airport, which I imagine many people will be using to get to SPT Newcastle).

Would it not make more sense to swap the Cardiff, Luton or Leeds dates with Newcastle on the next tour, therefore visiting Newcastle when its warmer and long distance journeys easier?

    Just a thought :O

Tbh mate this could be considered as racial abuse lol.
If you look at the differing amounts of bad weather across the country, then i think you'll find that we "up north" carry on with greater amounts then the soft southerners, who when London gets 2/3 inches of snow think the apocalypse has arrived(i have family in that area so i'm not just making an assumption).
Last year we had the bad snow for 3 weeks and it didn't really affect the turnout to any great degree,(and the atmosphere was brilliant).
I believe a better question would be, whether it would wiser to not have any events over the six weeks between x-mas and the 3rd week of Jan, or have one in the canaries lol.

I'm not saying you don't handle bad weather as good as the south. In fact I'm quite sure the opposite is true! I was just thinking about how bad road conditions and transport links could be for people travelling so far North. Perhaps a more central location would be wiser in the winter so the average journey time for people attending is far less. Your idea of not having an event during the coldest part of winter is also not a bad idea to be honest! Being snowed in a city far from home does sound too much fun!

I did get your post. The first part of my reply was meant to be lighthearted and my point is that all parts of the country have been hit by this weather, so where ever you hold one runs the risk of disruption, as i have said last year was worse at the time of the event.

You make some typically valid points there, & they will be taken on Board when planning future SPT Seasons.

Thanks, Ashley, you are a top bloke.

Im in Glasgow, and heading to Newcastle on Saturday morning as I cant get down on the Friday.  Moving the Newcastle leg next year wouldnt be a problem for anyone that lives here as everywhere else is warmer than here lol.  Why not hold a leg in Tenerife or that in Nov/Dec haha.  See you all on Saturday.
