CHRISTMAS CARDS by BRYAN ORYAN

edited December 2010 in Poker Chat
As a young boy growing up in a less scary world,Bryan and i took great joy when mother asked us to deliver the xmas cards to family and friends.
With hands full, we both would run off into the cold night air making sure we posted the farthest ones away first, quickly working back to our next door neighbour Tony Malony, the local coupon man(for those of you too young to remember the coupon man,he would go round door to door to collect the littlewoods football pools coupon money, for which he would get a small percentage for his endeavors).

Poker of course way back then was unheard of,mother taught us how to play patience, and we would play for hours on end, then it would be bath time in the living room in that old gray tin bath ,placed by the roaring fire for maximum pleasure.
For a treat, dad would come rushing in with a piece of bread on the toasting fork, and place it as close as he could to the flames, till done ,a perfect black brown colour, then he'd shovel a load of lurpak real butter all over it,and quickly pass it over to our delight.
How quickly and far we have moved over the years to this more unfriendly era of time, when trust ,neighbourly
warmth and general good manner seem to have been left behind in the "black and white t.v "era of time.

We didn't have much way back then, and that night the unthinkable happened, messing about as young boys do,after toy fighting in the kitchen with our sticks for swords ,we realised there was a chip in the chair,if dad seen that there would be hell to pay,so we said a prayer, and miraculously it went unspotted.

That night ,running through those city streets wasn't totally devoid of trouble and fear,with 2 cards still to deliver and the thought of that burnt toast making our mouths water, out jumped Albert Talbot, the local bully ,and stopped us in our path.He grabbed at the cards, but we held tight, turned and ran towards the river, and against all odds we bolted into the dark to finish off what we had started.
That fateful night we look back on, Bryan and i,and realise a lesson was learned.

Playing cards today ,looking back on past times and using those experiences to help us along,we bring into our game, patience, the chip and chair and you,ve got a prayer, plus many times we have been left with 2 cards to be delivered, only to be confronted by some bully, trying to stop us getting our hands home,we toast you sky poker community, merry xmas, from Bryan and i.
