1st post - advice for these two hands

hi guys, any advice would be helpful. go easy on me as i dont know all the lingo. 

so, 40 minutes in to a free roll, doing ok, second on chips at the table. this was the first hand i  had played against this guy as he had just been seated but that didnt bother me as i was stacked well compared. So my question is should i have raised more pre flop? i didnt want to scare the guy off as i wanted to try and get value on a win.

Hand 2 - this was 5 hands after the one above, i had a 3k loss in between by over shoving Ace/ten. i had played a few hands with this guy and he was loose at times but not particularly aggressive so far. should i have bet more pre flop? should i have raised on the flop? all in on the turn maybe?

Personally.

First hand was played well, good bet sizes managed to get money in well and miles ahead.

Second 3x/3,5x raise making it 700 should do the trick
3bet flop probably to around 800

other than that, welcome to sky, fold KK AA pre flop because a bad bet is inevitable:D

Why didn't you raise on the flop on hand 2?

Remember when we have what we think is the best hand, it's no good just having it, we need to get paid for it.

The best way to do this is to give our opponents the opportunity to put more money in with a worse hand - by betting!!! - . So bet bet bet your good hands, and let him pay you.

My advice is that you need to learn to run better. For at least 48 hours before playing poker make sure you avoid walking under ladders and salute all magpies.

(Yawn.......... once again a strategy question turns out to be a bad beat in disguise)

thats not fair, he is new as he has stated. ok they are bad beats/unlucky but you can just say it rather then be rude

You played hand 1 perfectly well but got unlucky, others have already posted good advice regarding hand 2.
 
Poker forums often get cluttered up by people posting hands where they got unlucky after getting their chips in well ahead (aka bad beats), nobody is in the slightest bit interested or wants to know, it happens to us all, most of these posts on Sky get banished to Area51 (go there and have a good laugh). This is exactly what happened in hand 1 and is the reason why I over-reacted.  However, seeing as this was your first forum post I should have realised that you weren't aware of all that, so I apologise. Welcome to the forum and please keep posting.

cheers guys and thanks for the info. i realised i did go a bit soft on the second hand, maybe the first hand had some bearing on that. but at least i know i made some right moves somewhere on hand 1.

garyQQQ - thanks for apologising, well done, your mother taught you well. i will try keep my ever so boring nobody cares or wants to know 'bad beats' talk to area 51.

Hi,
These 2 hands are very similar in some ways. In the first one, you have the big chip lead over your opponent, so why not really put the pressure on them by putting them all in, on the flop. If they fold you have an extra 1400 chips, but i believe they would call any way and then it was unlucky.
The second was a mirror of the first, you should have raised more, by min raising preflop, you allow a player with a massive stack the oppourtunity to call and see what happens, post flop it is a case of him hitting part of the flop and you not having enough chips to deter him from continuing with the hand. My advise here would be to get your money in earlier and first, don't muck about, you have to remember that many smaller pots do add up to one big pot, but smaller pots don't put your tournament life at risk. To many players try to play some hands to cute, trying to get the maximum out of the hand, only to lose to bad hands and then moan about it, but if you win small, without having to show your hand all better.
One last thought, in freerolls these "bad beats" happen a lot more, as a lot of players don't take them seriously, and play any junk in any position.
