Tricky spot with AK, call or fold?

edited January 2011 in The Poker Clinic

I think as the chip leader has shoved aswell as the shortstack i would only want to be calling all my chips off with a high pocket player as theres a decent chance u might not win the hand and 2nd is alot better then 3rd and the chipleader winns u can take him on heads up and even if he loses u are in a better spot to win as he loses chips

i think its a decent fold as i said with the chipleader shoving

We are 3 handed at the final table of a low buy-in speed tournament. The remaining prizes are 1st £48.00, 2nd £28.80 and 3rd £19.20, this is not a bounty hunter. With a little under 20 bigs in front I pick up AK on the BB, but I'm faced with a pot commiting raise from the short stack and a shove from the chip leader. All 3 of us have been playing fairly aggresively as we battle for the prizes, the short stack doubled on the previous hand outdrawing me with his 40% equity when I put him all-in pre-flop. Do you call or fold here?

i think i would still call, as you say, you have all been fairly aggro and ak 3 handed is massive plus the chip leaders shove could easily just be to isolate the short stack. If you win that hand your almost certainly going to win the tourney so its a call from me, be interested to see what you did.

p.s the very best of luck in the 8k ds!

    I would call instantly.

I just think you should always play for the win, and this is a great spot.

The guy could be isolating with quite a wide range, knowing that we can only play with a premium hand, maybe JJ,QQ,KK,AA and AK.....so his play works almost all the time.

If we're flippin, so be it, but we can have him dominated loads here when he shows ATs+

Also, if he had a massive hand, wouldn't he try to maximise the amount he got paid by maybe smoothing the opening raise, or min raising (which would look super strong normally but some fish use it as an inducing tactic).

    thats a good point doh

i spose u should always call in that spot if u have good read on ur opponent as he was being agg theres a very good chance ur ahead

    cheers for advice

Thanks guys, I decided it should be a call as I'd be happy to get all-in against either of these in a HU pot with my cards. It didn't go my way this time, the shortie won the main pot, the side pot with the chip leader was split, so at least I wasn't eliminated. I've pondered over this one since, after a fair bit of thought I still consider my call to be marginal but correct against their ranges.

Thanks Waller. I don't think my chances are great to be honest, the field is obviously going to be very strong and I rarely play in high buy-in tournaments, deepstacks or cash games. My best results are mainly in small stakes Bounty Hunters and speed tournaments. I'm going to play a few practice deepies before the big day, if I can somehow survive to the sharp end then I'll start to fancy my chances a bit more as the stack to blind ratio narrows.

ul gary, it was the right call though.

as for the 8k ds, you'll be surprised, i qualified last month and actually found it easier than i thought as because of the quality of the field you dont get as many donks calling when they shouldnt even be in the hand! if it wasnt for a bad beat i would have been in a great position to cash. you're a winning player and like you say just play a few deepies to get used to them and i'm sure you will have a great chance on the night! i'm sure all the forum are behind you.
