Why the free Money?

edited February 2011 in Area 51
I'm not a big lover of internet poker, I am successful Live, but mainly run at a loss online.  I do think there are good tools and strategies to be honed online though.

My Acoount on here was in active for awhile as I went broke and didnt really feel like depositing.  Then I noticed in my e-mail I had been given "free money" to play.  I've noticed this at a different site also.

I cant ever think of a time that one of my casino's has contacted me and said "Hey, you've not been for awhile, here's some free money to come and play with".

I dont know whether I should be grateful for the free credit or suspicious of it.

Something I just put on another thread - it seems to fit this one too

    WELCOME TO THE POKER MERRY-GO-ROUND!!!

It certainly seems like an action induced merry-go-round. Win some, lose some (but a little more than you won) then win some, lose some and ........ repeat. Then deposit, rinse and repeat........ NOT SURE? HERE'S SOME FREE MONEY TO GET THE TASTE BUDS GOING!!

Everyone gets a taste, everyone lives in the hope that with a little tweak to their game they can be really good. Every win reinforces that belief and the fact that you lose is called variance. But stick at it because as long as you get your money in ahead it will all be good in the end. Rinse and repeat, rinse and repeat, rinse and ............

All the time the rake is generated to the maximum and every punter is happy in the thought that they really are a budding star - if it wasn't for that dratted variance.

Plenty of room on board .......... NEXT!

If I'm honest I kind of feel the free money is like selling cigarettes to children.  Its a way to maintain a customer base abd draw people back in who have decided that enoughs enough.  I didnt really want to say it outright without hearing other peoples thoughts.

When do you ever get something for nothing?

But beyond that, a casino just wouldnt do this.  It is very insidious.

Yeah i know as what i said was actually very tongue in cheek, rinse and repeat IS actually very very convincing (on this site anyway)

I have come to the conclusion that sites that have an RNG with PRE-DETERMINED outcomes leave a bit of a nasty taste in the mouth cos for all we know at certain points of a game it may NOT be as random as perhaps we all think/hope that it is

It's a bit like when oddbins phone dohhhhhhhhhh up and offer him a discount, as he hasnt ordered any cider for a few days.

These companys just want to keep us all hooked. :)

why would you complain about the free money, if you don't want it, don't use it.

back in 2009, i think, i didn't play on Sky for months, (due to poor customer service) and then one day received an e-mail saying they'd given me a free £50. a few days later I came on to spin it up and it went from there.  they made that £50 back in rake in no time at all

also in regards to the casino, funnily enough a friend received a letter from our local G yesterday giving him a £10 free bet as he hasn't been up with us in a while.  on top of this we have obv received alot of free food/drink in ourtime up there!

It's bizarre that there are so many complaints about things like freerolls, bad players, and now even free money.

BTW internet games are much tougher than live games.

Yeah wasnt complaining about free money.  Again it seems that a valid point is raised and then people urinate on it to serve some kind of smug self satisfaction.

I'm just wary of the reasoning behind offering it.  I have never heard of a casino offering free money, other than a small sign up voucher, to be used on roulette or such.  Complimentary food is standard as it costs nothing.

Again, wasnt complaining, was just exploring the business tactics behind it.  I'm sure any intelligent person can see that there is a certain level of duplicity in this practice.  With the convenience of online play, it takes someone using a deal of discipline to decide that they cannot play successfully online.  But once that decision is made e-mails offering free money are incredibly hard to refuse, thus returning players to the site.  Which is what its designed to do.

I'm getting really tired of people just shooting down other peoples experiences and input on here, as though they are all knowing.

Free Money, designed to get you back playing on the site and to deposit more money into the site one you get yourself back into the swing of things

It's not just the poker giving free money though, is it?

I got a free £5 to try sky vegas the other week. It's just a marketing ploy, make the most of it.

Variation of the same thing.  Equally insidious.

Interesting point it does seem a little bit of a conflict with the whole reseponsible gambeling ethos.
a bit like hey looser you havent blow your giro on here for a few months heres a fiver just to help you remember what fun you used to have!

As AL MURREY says  "there not alchoholics, there friends of the landlord"

Just discussing it with someone.  Isnt it a bit like someone giving up smoking after a lot of hard work.  Then Mayfair sending you a box of 20 for free.

An alcoholic giving up the juice then Stella sending a complementary crate?  It reinforces the addiction and dependancy.

I like your point about the conflict of responsible gambling BADBOY.

Casinos do this all the time

    Alea Leeds - 3 course meal £15 + £5 gaming chip

Grosvenor Leeds - first to register plays for free, next 9 play rake free!

Gala Leeds - Rake free Cash poker in March

Just 3 great offers if you live in Leeds

    Enjoy the free money!!

Not the same, those offers are based an retail offers as a reward.  Its not free money.  Your talking about getting a complimentary bonus based upon retail sales.

I'm talking about free money based on nothing.  Simply designed to return people to the site.

Sorry but imo the whole responsible gambling pony holds about as much water as the DRINK RESPONSIBLY campaign.
was in my local supermarket when they put on an advert telling me what a great deal i was getting by buying 3 cases of 15 stellas for 18 quid but what made me pmsl was the dont forget to drink responsibly reminder on the end

the casino offer in my post was literally free money

it's wrong 2 presume that everyone who has stopped playing on the site has done so because they have gone skint and got a gambling problem, alot of people may have gone to another site, along with other reasons for stopping playing

I didn't get a fiver to get me back. lol

I've only deposited money once here, never put money on any other site, and haven't yet broke that original deposit over a years play. Quite the opposite.

Thats great bud.  Dont really see why you'd feel the need to weigh in on the point though??

If you've never gone broke your in the very small minority.  But trust me, everyone goes broke at some point
