How do you avoid this kind of nonsense in early stages of MTTs

edited February 2011 in The Poker Clinic
My instinct was telling me not to play this hand so early which is why I only called pre-flop. My plan was to get off unless I flopped the world. I hit a straight flush draw to I played on, hit the flush, trapped the guy by check-raising him all in thinking that once I've doubled up I can go make a cuppa and come back when the real poker starts. My thoughts were that I was ahead unless he had a suited Ace or King of Spades. He turned over As3d and of course the river makes his nut flush.

This is not just a bad beat story though. I want to know how, with maniacs like this should I be playing the first levels of MTTs. I've tried not playing at all and coming back after 3/4 hr and find that I am too short-stacked to make any impact. Only time I've won anything is when these type of situations happen early doors and I double up.

What should I do about maniacs basically?
