Is this a terrible call or is my thinking sound despite loss

edited February 2011 in The Poker Clinic
This hand came in relative early stages of Primo last night, whilst it didn't completely wipe me out it is the hand that I look back on with an if only........

I raise utg with AJ and get 3 callers. I hit top pair but with dangerous board and c bet. Villian min raises and others in pot fold.

Villain has had a small hit in chips once against me where he called my flop c bet on Ahigh board with A5 and lost to my AK after we both checked turn and river. My image at this point is loose as I have raised alot of pots with broadway cards and callers have folded to my c bets without going to showdown (apart from above against villian) So this is point where I am properly trying to work out his range. I discount qq+ as he would have re-raised. AK and AQ obviously possible but I thought unlikely as also rr. So I put him on raggy Ace or 2 hearts or maybe kq.

So based on the above I 4bet (or is that a 3 bet never sure?) and he jams all in, based on my reads above I'm just thinking he is pot commited so go ahead and call.

What do people think of call? Am i always behind here? Would appreciate one of those poker stove analysis things from one of the mathematical bods.

At the risk of answering my own question, I should have folded as too dangerous board to be getting busy early on in mtt, but it was just so tempting!!!

Your first bet is too small, should be at least 250.

When he minraises it could be a draw but as he's put in around a 5th of his stack I'd think he ain't folding. So it's just a case of would he do this with A10 down, if not he has you beat.

Also out of interest do you start with just 2000 chips in Primo ?

Thanks for your thoughts. Yes 2000 starting stack in Primo, but it has gone up to 15 minute levels

    hi matt,

One thing i would say on this hand is yeah rule out QQ+ but dont rule out AK AQ TJ as players will call in early stages with these hands, flips are usually avoided early.

Again on the flop, the min raise tells me we're beat, call and check fold turn if we done improve with a T.

Reason for this is most players who maybe arent as good as the beter players min raise thinking its good. However with players who understand this concept makes it pretty poor.

Id say that this is best considering the play. Obviously could be on a draw but this isnt a good board for AJ at all/
