edited February 2011 in The Poker Clinic
About a half-pot sized bet left on the river....

Can you fire it????

Or would you give up???

Should I have bet smaller on the turn so I have a bigger bet left otr? I think that's what I shouldda dun :(

    lmao

if you're gonna fire twice go the whole way!! Slam it in there!

£11 is enough to get him off if he was drawing, may get him off second/3rd pair too. Obv never folding with a Q, and that forms a big part of his range, but with £23 in the middle and with absolutely zero showdown value, I think the shove is the best move now to try and win it. If you lose, you've dropped another £11 but if you check, you've thrown the £11 you've already invested away for nothing. If he does call you can get a little information about what he was calling all the way with, which could be quite valuable if he ends up calling you with a very weak hand.

The turn bet was pretty strong, I think like you said with your stack, if you make it £6 instead it gives you that little bit extra leverage on the river if you miss. No draws have been completed on the river, and you've been repping pretty strong... I think I'd pull the trigger here.

    (P.S WTF preflop call lol)

On a similar theme, this hand I got myself into serious difficulty and was unsure what to do, turn and river. Opponent was passive and I had some success pushing him off pots. Like  Dohh I blame poor betsizing. My flop bet left me nowhere to go. But what should I do on the river?  Think it was FT in a £400 gtd very late last night.

Why on earth would you pot bet the flop penguin?

He's either got something to call with or he doesn't. Half pot bet max on that sort of flop.

Totally agree m8 ! As I said betsizing was dreadful. Only excuse that it was 3.20am. And both Mickjenn and myself had got him to limp/fold preflop numerous times and his flat sort of took me by surprise !

Penguin. Raise less pre (not at all imo but w/e), half pot max flop, shove turn when you actually pick up some resemblence of a hand. How you check there after investing 24k with 8k behind just baffles me.

I stand by my preflop bet, this FT had been running a while and I had quite a feel for the guys play. It was the bet on the flop that was so bad. At least you know now I dont only play premium hands !

With no showdown value at all on the turn, just the flush draw, I found it hard to shove there, guessing he may check behind. If he had bet I would have folded, so deep and 4 handed I could face battling back with only 5BBs. Fortunately he checked behind.

Then it was easier putting him on a hand on the river. I ruled out PPs, thinking he was A10 or maybe AQ, but more likely  Ax spades. The total blank on the river didnt help me, and the hard bit was what I could represent with a shove. I didnt think he would believe I had stop/goed with a jack, and looking for a check/raise with a king in my hand made no sense at all with the stacks and pot size.

Anyway I shoved, in hope more than anything else, simply because he had been so passive, and it was his tourny on the line. And he folded ! I guess he was on the spade draw but what did he put me on ? Can only think QQ  ?

Very poorly played and very lucky. He came back to beat me headsup, good luck to him.
