MTT Tips for All levels of play.

edited March 2011 in Poker Chat
Here's my top three rules from the playbook of MTT's

CALM PATIENT MINDSET.
1.  Its not a sprint or a challenge to the ego.  Patience and well timed aggression are paramount.  There's always going to be some guy pushing the action, dont let the ego step in and decide you'll load your gun with A6o and go to war.  Dont try and out play the guys coming into every pot, just play better than them when you do come in.

BETTING, POT CONTROL/MANIPULATION
2.  Experiment with bet sizes.  Very often a small probe bet will give the same result as the full on 2/3's or pot sized bet.  Also plays into pot control/manipulation.  When a board goes from being very dry to semi wet, or you feel the trap closing on a later street, the less of your stack you've committed the more options you will have.  Also experiment with post flop 3 bet semi bluffs where you have a good feel for your opponent.  Someone 3 bets you on the flop or turn when your just holding 1 pair and no redraw, how do you react?  If you feel you have the best non nut hand, bet.  Gives you information, builds a pot.

COMMITTING YOUR TOURNAMENT LIFE.
3.  Just when do you make a decision for your whole stack or large portions of your stack in an MTT?  The answer should be rarely.  You know that sinking feeling when you've committed to much of your stack with AK, your opponent flips 9's and you off to the races.  Or when you flip the Q's vs the AK.  People shake their heads and cry out  "I had to call" when they miss.  You will last longer in any tournament if you simply decide to stop racing off your chips.  Your chips are your soldiers.  Keep the cavalry on the hillside and play good post flop poker.

One of the most undervalued poker tools is a strong table image.  All these tips tie in well with a calm rockish type image.  But once that image is established it is very easy to pick up pots using the pre mentioned 3 bet semi bluffs.  Leaving yourself chips, not over commiting, is leaving yourself options.

Thats mine :)  Good skill out there.
