A couple of difficult cash hands from a novice! Help Please.

Hi, i just wondered if anyone could check out a couple of hands i played earlier today, these are the hands that causd me a few problems.

Hand 1.
Villain had just joined table and short stacked which usually means they are here more to gamble than play the game on these tables in my experience. No real reads on villain. Found myself with pocket 8's and wanted a cheap look at the flop to see if i could hit my set. I won the hand in the end but was'nt happy with the way i played it. Just wanted some input whether this is correct or not.

Hand 2.
Villain in this hand had been quite active and aggressive on the table. Basically, dry flop and i have two overcards when villain makes an overbet. Put villain on a set or possible straight draw and folded. Was it the right move? I find these hard to figure when i have two overcards, i know i dont have a hand but i find them hard to put down.

First hand I would've rsised 3 or 4*BB PF and then raised 4*BB on the flop.

Second hand villain probably has Ax and figures an overbet on that flop will fold everyone out unless he's very unlucky. So, you've got 2 choices; fold or reraise.

Looking at the stack sizes in hand one, I'd make a chunky raise pre flop, so you can bet most flops and get the majority of the opponents stack in (put the rest in on the turn)

If it was a smaller pocket pair, I would just limp as you did.
