New Card Room Opening

edited March 2011 in Poker Chat
As part of my degree I am doing a business-planning module. For this I am planning and researching into open a card room, based around a similar business model as DTD. The venue will be based in the north for obvious reasons i.e. as far away from Nottingham as possible. The capacity will also based around that of DTD. So if anybody has any suggestions of unique selling points (USP’s) eg lower rake, smaller stakes cash games or anything people would like to see in card rooms the feedback would be greatly appreciated. Also if any sky employee has any useful statistics for card rooms the input will be warmly welcomed.  I thank you all for your input.

Not sure if the data exists, but if you could find clusters of online poker players, that are, say more than 50 miles from a casino, that would be a good way to select your location.

Set up your schedule to cater for all types of players.  Triple chance is great for beginners,  A good priced Deepstack for players who like time to play,  some unlimited re-buys for player, LIKE MAXALLY, who like to gamble.

Oh make sure you have events with extra money donated to the prize pool by the card room.

Run satellites where the winners gets a seat at a major UK based event

Make sure all games are dealer dealt

    Anyway hope that helps

Id say what Jocks says is good.

Id say something up in Scotland would likley be a location. Although a number of casinos here none really offer anything great. Although keep it centralish.

Tournaments id say hire a decent and experianced tournament director to help you with various structures, someone like say, Tony "Tikay" Kendell.

Make deals with poker leagues, make sure that their regional and national finals are held in your card room. By getting new and younger players into your venue when their still learning their more likley to go there when they are more experianced.

i'd say provide free soft drinks, with reduced alcohol prices for players, even consider feeding them. The happier they are the longer they stay and more likley to return.

Long term plans, to hold maybe 2 or 3 major events a year, again getting the bigger players in and keeping them happy might make them make your card room their hunting ground.

Sponsor players who are showing good ability within your venue in major events, by publisising your venue in these events with a few players can work as good advertisement with rewards of some return if you pick the correct players.

    Just a few things.

Your plan needs to start with the important thing, if you plan to do one like DTD - get a Licence.

About £1,000,000 up front to obtain it, & £300,000 per annum for "Compliance".

If you can build a business model that can finance that, you are on your way.

You absolutely CANNOT make money out of an unlicensed Cardroom.

You can ONLY make money out of a Licensed Cardroom if you have a Casino attached, or a Gaming Licence that permits Roulette & Blackjack, aka "House Games".

You cannot design a credible business plan for a self-financing Cardroom - it's not possible.

There is no money to be made in laying poker in the B & M environment.

    Any questions, just shout.

    Good luck!

    Hi Tikay

Thanks very much for your im-put. We have a budget of £200,000 for start up costs and first year’s working capital. So we only need another £1.1 million to get our licence, im sure once we have a solid business plan and model in place you would invest £1.1 million in the card room based in the north? (Pocket change for you Sir Kendal)

Penguin7 gave me some very useful info regarding tax issues on gambling rues and regulations (Thanks again Penguin7)

I live near Hull, so are going to base the brand around The Devil Fish, so the card room will be e.g. The Devil Fish Room. (So the brand will be worth 1.1 Million ???

    No………I hear you say

Does anybody else have any better suggestions for a name, or a card room in any body’s honour? Jake Cody?

    Suggestions please

     Got it Tikays Den ?????

Read the diary Rob Yong wrote about the issues he had when starting DTD - on their website I believe if you haven't read it yet. It is very interesting and full of information of the hurdles he endured and may be of help to you when considering things.

Devil Fish Room - YUK - more off putting than anything else!!
Personally I wouldn't name it after a player but if you do, make sure it is a well liked poker player ;)
DTD also used a lot of Pros to market the brand and that is a possibility to do perhaps although may not be cost effective - something you would have to work out I guess.

Gl with it all - I would love to read it after it's completion and please post away here for more advice whilst in the research stages for ideas etc!!

P.S. Maybe someone like Jakally would be best placed to give you an idea about rake on cash games etc He has been around the block hundred of times by now and what he doesn't know about DTD and the live cash scene is probably not worth knowing anyway.

    Hi Dylan

How are you, I played with you and hoggers also some guys called Richard Orford and James Hartigan ages ago at Glasgow, in the side games.

who would you like to see the card room named after, The Trinket Room ??, The Luke Swartz room ??

    who knows ........

Whats the card rooms in Wales like then ?

    Hi Dave

I remember you now, thought the name rang a bell!! Hope you are keeping well!!

Personally I don't like the idea of naming a room after a player because it could potentially be dated very quickly. But If I had to name one player to name it after then yeah, Sam Trickett is the Golden boy of Poker atm so his name would be recognised by the masses and would be more sustainable than most.

"Card Rooms" in Wales are very poor tbh but a nice one has opened in Cardiff last year - Les Croupiers, where Sky are holding the SPT this year - Plenty of space and tables aren't cramped in and it is on a level above the casino floor which is always good!! But the poker schedule is a bit poor but maybe im being picky when comparing their schedule to DTD's which aint really fair tbh!!

Gl with this project and holla when stuck!!

    Dave,

Hope you're well.  I have fond memories of that epic S&G in Glasgow :)

Sorry to rain on your parade, but I think you may have missed the most important part of Tikay's post:

"You cannot design a credible business plan for a self-financing Cardroom - it's not possible.

"There is no money to be made in laying poker in the B & M environment."

Unless you can find a super-rich investor who's willing to fund such a project as a hobby, I'm afraid it just ain't gonna happen...
