Sky Poker forums will be temporarily unavailable from 11pm Wednesday July 25th.
Sky Poker Forums is upgrading its look! Stay tuned for the big reveal!
As part of my degree I am doing a business-planning module. For this I am planning and researching into open a card room, based around a similar business model as DTD. The venue will be based in the north for obvious reasons i.e. as far away from Nottingham as possible. The capacity will also based around that of DTD. So if anybody has any suggestions of unique selling points (USP’s) eg lower rake, smaller stakes cash games or anything people would like to see in card rooms the feedback would be greatly appreciated. Also if any sky employee has any useful statistics for card rooms the input will be warmly welcomed. I thank you all for your input.

at a decent price
Id say something up in Scotland would likley be a location. Although a number of casinos here none really offer anything great. Although keep it centralish.
Tournaments id say hire a decent and experianced tournament director to help you with various structures, someone like say, Tony "Tikay" Kendell.
Make deals with poker leagues, make sure that their regional and national finals are held in your card room. By getting new and younger players into your venue when their still learning their more likley to go there when they are more experianced.
i'd say provide free soft drinks, with reduced alcohol prices for players, even consider feeding them. The happier they are the longer they stay and more likley to return.
Long term plans, to hold maybe 2 or 3 major events a year, again getting the bigger players in and keeping them happy might make them make your card room their hunting ground.
Sponsor players who are showing good ability within your venue in major events, by publisising your venue in these events with a few players can work as good advertisement with rewards of some return if you pick the correct players.
Just a few things.
Thanks Guys for the feed-back, its give some food!!! for thought really appreciate it.
Your plan needs to start with the important thing, if you plan to do one like DTD - get a Licence.
About £1,000,000 up front to obtain it, & £300,000 per annum for "Compliance".
If you can build a business model that can finance that, you are on your way.
You absolutely CANNOT make money out of an unlicensed Cardroom.
You can ONLY make money out of a Licensed Cardroom if you have a Casino attached, or a Gaming Licence that permits Roulette & Blackjack, aka "House Games".
You cannot design a credible business plan for a self-financing Cardroom - it's not possible.
There is no money to be made in laying poker in the B & M environment.
Any questions, just shout.
Good luck!
Hi Tikay
Thanks very much for your im-put. We have a budget of £200,000 for start up costs and first year’s working capital. So we only need another £1.1 million to get our licence, im sure once we have a solid business plan and model in place you would invest £1.1 million in the card room based in the north? (Pocket change for you Sir Kendal)
Penguin7 gave me some very useful info regarding tax issues on gambling rues and regulations (Thanks again Penguin7)
I live near Hull, so are going to base the brand around The Devil Fish, so the card room will be e.g. The Devil Fish Room. (So the brand will be worth 1.1 Million ???
