US Government Contradiction when it comes to gambling

edited April 2011 in Poker Chat
This whole situation does seem like a contradiction in terms to me.

The country that promotes itself on the "land of the free" principle has since 2006 (or when the legislation was passed) dictated to poker companies(meaning its citizens cant use them) that they cannot trade in the US. And yet at the same time live gambling in places like casino's in Las Vegas has thrived. Im not getting into a poker is a game of skill arguement, we all know the answer to that one. But this does smack a bit of double standards from the US government.

I cant help feeling the establishment in Las Vegas have been leaning heavily on politicians with big inducements to keep the status quo, because lets face it bricks and mortar casinos must have lost business to their on-line counterparts pre 2006.

Not having US players allowed to play on-line poker is a bad thing in general. At the top they have the best players in the world. But the reacreational players are donks, not because as a country they are rubbish at poker, simply because there are a lot more people playing poker in the US and ,therefore, more fish to catch.
