Through the night, managed to keep the mice fine. Energetic, rolling about, drinking. Fed them about half nine this morning, still ok- went to feed them again around half eleven, and two have died, with the third looking extremely lifeless and barely responding to food.
Really, really upset now I feel responsible now for killing them. Even though they would have died out there on their own anyway.
*sigh*
Anyway, since I was trying to keep mice alive and didn't have work today, I decided to have a nice late night poker session. Ended up 2 buyins down in rapid succession after being dealt JJ almost first hand and someone open shoved into me- dwelt a little and decided that the hand range was probably good enough to have a go.

That was fine, a dozen hands later or so I lost another buyin with 9s, which I was less than happy about. Convinced myself it was donk overplaying AK, and I was wrong as wrong could be. Very annoyed with myself for playing like an idiot, and realised I was a tad tilted and chasing losses. Not good.

Started to figure out what was going on, and had the fortune to sit at the table of someone intent on giving their money away- which resulted in me making an absolute killing. He donated around 3/4 buyins alone to me, making my job of rebuilding just that tad easier. The first one is by far my favourite. Having seen how he plays, the second one was surprisingly strong- I thought my K and 9 were probably live, and it wasn't beyond the realms of possibility I was actually ahead at that point. Third hand was another standard occurrence. It might have looked like a loose call, but the implied odds with this guy were so massive- if you flop a big hand, the chances of getting paid were monumental. A single bb to see a flop was very worth it.

Another 17 and a half buyins to go, and I can move up a level, yay! Starting to quite like it here though ^^
Lol. On the surface, a bit of an implosion. But after the week I've had, which has been long anyway and doubly so with the 24/7 mousecare, I decided to just have a bit of fun at the tables when someone suggested some forum cash action. One 10 seater (which was quite a tight table) and one 6 seater (which was... considerably less tight).
Because the 10 seater was playing so tight, Booni suggested a little spice. Such as a multiway allin preflop. Me being in quite the jovial mood was all for it- and so were a few others, which is always fun. I got dealt monsters in both the allin hands we played- shame they didn't hold up though

So there went 2 buyins straight away. The next hand at least was interesting- obviously the table dynamic was pretty mental (we enforced a mandatory straddle, with a double straddle next orbit penalty if you forget, which happened a lot) and the betting was pretty wild preflop. So when YG made this shove, I made the call knowing there was a chance I was actually ahead. I took some time, thought out the decision and decided the chances of me drawing just to a queen were very slim, my ace was very likely live and there was a good chance of my jack being live too. Added to which was the reasonable possibility of him having JQ with the amount already invested made the call worthwhile (although we were playing hyper aggro for fun, no sense in making it a pointless shovefest!). Thankfully, my reasoning proved sound- not so thankfully, he hit.
Never mind, I stacked him later.

I also successfully pulled off a nice bluff against dohhh, who said he folded AQ- it says a lot about the dynamics that he was very seriously considering calling, thinking he was ahead. I read him for overs and thought he'd put it down, but it was still a bit of a sweat. ^^

I'm actually quite pleased I ended up over my starting roll. By the time we finished playing our fun cash, my roll was down to 90- so I made the decision that, fun as it was, I was missing out on valuable grinding time against considerably easier players, so went off and managed to get together enough pots to go back over 100. Back to square 1, and totally bodged my br management- but had a bloody good laugh so that's good enough for me! Had some really sick coolers against fish (flopped straight busted by higher gutshot on river, flush beaten by house etc) so I'm not too bothered. If I went out on a friday night, like I normally would, I'd have lost a whole heap more than £30 so it's not all bad ^^
Was a fun game and i always thought you were a nit before last night lol QJ hand i got very lucky not a bad move though still , 2nd hand as dohhh said thats like the nuts in last nights game how i didnt bink is beyond me lol
I was £16 up on 6 seater, £8 on the 10 seater run good much :P
dunno why its writing in bold?? oh yeah was nice of Boonicon & crazyben to join us and LOL Raise but i was too tired to carry on then did watch a bit though silently
watched you guys play for a bit last night. thought i might get some pointers on play. not sure i did though! were you guys all drunk!! lol! was fun to watch though and if i'd had a spare 4 or 5 buyins to lose i might have joined you. then again the way the hands were going they would have probably lasted about 3 minutes
Tried playing 6 tables today for the first time. Surprisingly, went really well actually- was able to focus entirely on the action, never got bored waiting for hands (a real killer for me) and generally played well. Unfortunately, I ran like an absolute horror and walked into cooler after cooler, with general bad beats thrown in. To be honest, I consider any time you get TPTK and someone has better a cooler at this stage, some of the plays may look a tad over aggressive but the same players have made the same plays with 2nd/3rd pair, or top pair no kicker, so I'm pretty sure that it's correct play. Some (like the K high flush and Js full of 10s) are about as sick as you get and you're never getting off them, even at higher limits.
So, I ended up down, but considering the amount I lost with these sicko hands it really could have been worse- glad I was playing a decent game. Decided to get out after the last couple of hands before I start to tilt.

Had a couple nice ones go my way too though, to be fair.
Cheers MM, unfortunately guilt is rarely a rational emotion- logically I know I couldn't have done more, they would have died anyway, etc etc- but doesn't change the feeling of responsibility. It's quite a sick feeling when something that depends wholly on you dies because you weren't able to do enough for it.
Anyway, more hands played, very little BR change. Played in the mini open for a laugh, haven't played an MTT in a while- finished around 5 off the cash (shoved 84 off on button- got looked up. Ooops.)
Still, nice to play a decent MTT and stay in practice- planning on trying to satellite into Primo tomorrow.
Had a bit of a mixed bag, played some good, quality poker a ttimes, but let myself down by playing some stupid hands- butchered this first one horrendously. Second hand, I'm not so sure. I think at this level I have to put it down as a cooler- far too many random hands like any A, any K, any J, any 2 diamonds make the same shove for the call to be profitable I think. Granted, it was multiway which did make things kind of nasty, but with the gutshot as a backup and the ace being live if the opponent isn't on a draw themselves (in which case I wouldn't need to hit anyway) I figured it has to be the right play.
Same with the third hand, I knew I was probably behind going in, but both my overs are most likely live, and a flush draw too gives me virtually 50% equity anyway. Just didn't hit.

Only 2 notable winning hands- first one is just lolworthy, second one was vul on opponents part- if the hands are reversed, all my money's in the middle too. So nothing to get too happy about (but hey, getting an allin when you're holding a set=awesome).

Tomorrow I'm working with a composer on a 5 movement symphony for our local music council (Brent), alongside all the other music tutors in the area- which should be pretty epic. Guy is a total fruitloop, so no idea what to expect yet- last time I met him he had us all running around singing about building bungalows.
Yea, I have no idea either. But seeing a whole bunch of 50 year old teachers singing about bungalows is something everyone should experience before they die.

ugh, so many red numbers. Uuuugggly. Seem to be finding a recurring pattern currently, go up by a couple buyins over the course of an hour or so, then blow it all and a bit more on sick coolers. Still convinced that it's going to turn soon, I'm just about staying afloat but running pretty horribly- big hands getting cracked with alarming regularity.
I think I perhaps didn't do myself any favours in the first hand- I think the money would have gone in whatever, only 8-10 specifically or a house had me beat, and I've seen plenty of spa z outs from missed flushes (which was what he had, incidentally- he just fell into a straight instead). Think I should have followed my normal line of betting with value hands on the flop, my mistake.
Next hand, he plays any Q the same way- just ul to run into a random 2 pair. Can't ever fold that. Third hand, obvious cooler. Money was always going in, he hit- that's poker. But again I didn't do myself any favours if I'm being critical by such a small reraise on flop- I felt I had plenty of room to get stacks in still, and really didn't want to lose my customer with top set. A lower set, and I probably play it more aggressively thinking he may have an ace.
4th hand, NFD and 2 overs=never getting away with it. I can see why people get tilted at this level- 5x raise and he calls with J8os, me personally though- I don't mind that. If the board comes down 479 he either folds, or calls on the gutshot anyway- so give me those players every day. Once I get a little bit of rungood I'll make a killing.
Two decent winning hands- maybe tried a little much on the river, but with our stack sizes I figured anything calling a normal value bet may call a shove, and if he's on a draw I'm not getting anything anyway. Couldn't risk checking and getting checked behind, though in hindsight it may have been the superior move.
I'm undecided if I played the last hand well. I got all the chips, so I could say I did- and I think A10 is ahead of the preflop shoving range, and the calling range too. Once I hit the flop, I just needed to get his stack any way I could- checking might have been a little suspect, but I think it may have helped me get his stack- a bet on the flop and he probably calls anyway, but the delay on it may have convinced him his 7s were good.
What am I talking about, this is NL4- bottom pair is worth stacking off on. />.<
Enterered 2 primo sats, busted in both- no complaints, played well enough in both and got down to the business end, just came up short in races (K10vs99 and KQvs99). Probably going to play the mini primo tonight, but no more satellites- £12 is outside my budget for now.
Little cool off, then some more NL4 fun later! I'm gonna crack this soon.
Been following this thread and loving the notes, however looking at your results so far, i feel you have been a little bit too optimistic in your opening post, so i recommemend you change the title of this thread to factor in your recent performances, lets call it :-
Cash challenge and diary - £100 into £10 - using BRM!!
Starting Bankroll- £86.90Ending Bankroll- £71.53 MTT Profit- -6.60 Cash Profit- -8.77 Total MTT Profit- -14.08 Total Cash Profit- -14.39 Total Profit- -28.47 Session Hands Played- 330Total Hands Played- 3440 Sadly Loonytoons, you're probably right. It's just variance, but it's still frustrating. I totally sympathise with people that go through rough spells where they're just not hitting. For me, it's smacking me in the face every which way- not only am I getting sucked out on and not hitting, but when I do hit massive- everyone's folding. 2 hands really summed it up yesterday- I got KQ, raised up 5x and got 3 callers. Board missed me, someone bets then goes allin, I'm obviously way out the way. Next hand virtually, I got AA. Raised 5x, everyone hits the muck. Even 2 people that limped in prior. Variance isn't just about getting your good hands cracked, it's about getting your good hands paid- if you're not getting called with big hands, you're not making money. So anyway, I'm feeling fairly philosophical and laid back about it now. I was tilting like mad yesterday, but cooled off enough to step away from the tables and go to bed, rather than play like a maniac. Entered both the 1k gtd for 1.10 and the mini primo for 5.50 for some light relief, with chance of a nice payout- bust in both, reasonably standard hands- no complaints.
First hand, I made a c-bet as I normally would on a favourable flop, and got a call. Heart draw worried me a tad, but it's NL4- they could have any two. Oppo had little back anyway.
Second hand, in retrospect, I played like a bit of a twit. I felt he was drawing to the flush or had a random ace, so worst river card in deck- I was expecting him to bet a busted draw, seen him get caught at it by another player, so I think that was my thought process. But I really played the hand like a fish, not proud of it at all.
Third hand, I'm not totally convinced. The signs were there he had a set- but again- it's NL4. Can I really get away from an overpair knowing what this level's like?
4th hand is just a bit disgusting. I know he calls river with random kings as well, so I figured I'm in this far- may as well just stick the rest in. Could maybe have saved myself that river bet though.

Obviously I won a couple hands, but not many notable ones. Got quads, slowplayed a tad, managed to get paid about as well as I could I think. In this situation I think the flop check was good to get underpairs to feel they were ahead- may have got his stack anyway, but I think this was the best way to play it.
Second hand, again happy with how I played it- think the river check is best move there, if he has nothing he may bluff at it, I'm obviously committed to calling on the end with 2 pair, but the board is so wet I'd rather check/call than bet, where I'm probably losing if called.
Last hand, great flop from me- solid PSBs on flop/turn/river, nice size pot. Happy with this.

YAY, progress. I have some little green numbers again, weeeeeeee ^^ I knew that it would change soon, but when you're on a bad run- you're still relieved when things start going your way again. Not a particularly large session, but my big hands were getting paid off again, and wasn't getting outdrawn so much (in fact, only had 2 losing pots over £1 in the whole session, compared to 10 winning over £1. Only 2 winning pots over £2 as well).
It's amazing just how much variance can change your session, and to anyone not used to playing cash- I can understand why it would tilt and make them think they're hopeless- the best player in the world will take a thrashing if luck happens to be against them. It can be very, very tough to try and ride that out sometimes though, which is why taking a break for however long you need to ensure you keep playing your highest quality poker is essential, IMO. I think most losing streaks start off as variance kicking you, and end because you're playing like a complete tiltmonkey, shoving on draws and getting more angry when they don't hit, raising bigger and wider pre, calling/shoving with top pair weak kicker, 2nd pair top kicker, etc- basically, just becoming too wild. The more you lose, the more wild you get.
This is NOT a recipe for success (trust me, I've tried it. Hasn't worked for me yet). I had a woeful weekend, partly my fault for entering into a forum cash game, but I don't regret it- it was fantastic fun, good to let off steam and play some mentally aggressive, 'proper' poker for a change rather than grinding out and only playing aces and kings. But I also ran like a horror, and in the past would have fallen down that trap of tilting away my br- this time, I took time out, came back refreshed, and continued to lose again. But this time it wasn't my fault, and each time I lost a buyin or two through nasty beats/coolers, I shut down and left again, no matter how often I had to rinse and repeat. In the end, by playing a normal game, it turns back and my br remains very much intact.
In answer to Paul- I don't play DYMs because I hate them, with a passion. I tried multitabling them a few months ago to get into TSP- I played 5.50 dyms, 4 at a time for hours at a time, and it was the most souldestroying thing I've ever done. I think I lasted a week or two, played a couple hundred in total and just couldn't take any more. I think I ended up making like £20 or so, and a bunch of league points. The DYM mentality just isn't for me- I could perhaps play a couple, I did think about it- but I really, really want to crack the cash game, and that's where the majority of my effort will be going. The odd MTT will be played just to keep me sane, because I far prefer them, but I won't be using the results of them in this challenge.
And in answer to Dohhhh- I think the preflop sizing is the main thing I have to fix at this level. My postflop play is much better than preflop I think- I need to evaluate my starting hands, how to play them, what hands are strong enough to reraise with, how much to reraise, how to play suited cons+small pairs in unopened pots, etc. I'm experimenting a little with some different approaches to these, still undecided about my favourite way of playing them- I don't like folding any pair due to the lucrative nature of sets, but I don't like overinflating the pot when you're likely to get 4way action, and you have no way of winning without hitting your set.
On to some hands- the two losing hands first up.
The first, I don't even really want to talk about. Terrible, terrible play by me. But it did give me a valuable insight to the player I was against, and I stacked him 10/20 minutes later- so it did have some benefit. I was certain he didn't have a king (well, I suppose it was possible- but highly unlikely) but everything about it suggested he had a 7. Preflop raise was poor, I had just arrived at the tables, was slightly busy with something else and was just clicking buttons. Really, I should have just given this one up on the flop and let him have it. Very embarrassing hand all round, and an important lesson- FOCUS ON WHAT YOU'RE DOING! Even at NL4, you shouldn't just let your mind wander.
Second hand, just a cooler. Notes say my opponent is liable to have anything at all, could easily have turned up there with J high, they didn't have enough behind, etc etc. Nothing you can really do.

On to some big winning hands, yay! Hand #1 was a little bit speculative, but flop was very good for me, and multiway I wanted to get some money in whilst my draw was still live, rather than once it became a made hand and it might be tougher to get the kind of action I want. If someone jams allin I fold without too much loss, but if- as expected- everyone calls, I'm getting the kind of odds I like when my draw hits. When it hits on the turn, my sizing is probably suspiciously small, and I wouldn't normally size that low- but their stack size was a consideration here. Everyone had shallow stack, and a half pot bet on turn+river would be enough to stack any of them, and I find they're more likely to call a shallow bet on turn, which then leaves them potstuck by the river. If I bet pot, they're more likely to fold marginals like A high on the turn. With bigger stacks, I bet more.
Raising preflop with JQs is, arguably, not a fantastic move in NL4, but I was feeling good about my game, and in the cutoff- plays pretty well postflop. Nice flop for me, but even nicer turn- when the turn hits, I've got everything I possibly want here. The sizing again was meant to slowly draw him in to get his money by the river- betting just enough to ensure he has less than half the pot in his stack by river. The river bet could be argued as a bit thin, but top pair 3rd kicker is still very strong at this level, and I will get called by a whole heap worse- so I don't mind the vbet on the end.
The last hand is probably the perfect example of what's different today compared to the weekend, and it's nothing to do with me. I played a very similar hand on the weekend, only it got there and instead of being virtually a buyin up, I was a buyin down. That's how it goes. I played the flop quite passively since I know my villain likes to raise big when checked, or minbet to him- then I can come back over the top. He actually had a surprisingly strong hand, and was unlucky in fairness- I was still a statistical favourite though. Relieved to see it go my way.

Ugh, really thought this was going to be another losing session. Got my money in miles ahead twice early on, only to end up getting outdrawn for reasonably large pots- was down a buyin having played some really solid, aggressive ABC poker for an hour. Thankfully over the next hour and a half turned it round with similar play, but hands holding a little better this time. Relief.com. I was starting to think maybe I'd made an error somewhere in how I was approaching the game. As an aside, I decided to check my stats on how I'm doing in the smaller pots;
Pots of 20p or more- Won 32, lost 19 Pots of 40p or more- Won 20, lost 9 Pots of 80p or more- Won 9, lost 4
Good ratio of course, but I might pay a little more attention to this next time I have a losing session. The one that really decides if I'm winning or losing is going to be the big pots, but the fact I'm holding a decent ratio throughout suggests I'm selecting hands well and playing them optimally.
I don't think there's really anything interesting to say about the first two major losing pots of the session. They're pretty much just standard bad beat/coolers, whatever you want to call them. Obviously thought I was way ahead in the first hand, and felt I was ahead on flop and turn in second hand- certainly nothing really changed that could be noticed on the turn, and he stacks with any random jack just as easily.
Third hand is perhaps more interesting- ordinarily, this is a standard stackoff at a decent limit. Fold equity+massive draw=ez game. I'd been having some luck with c-bets, picking my spots (and having a decent hand most of the time!) and getting a lot of folds on flops, so having had it checked, I just bet out expecting a fold, or a call at worst- I can improve a lot. But he jammed. At this point, I think I have no choice but to call- I expect my overs to be live a lot of the time. Obviously they weren't and I lost, but I think I still play this the same way. With a much bigger stack against me, I think I probably fold.

I hit some nice hands. What's more, they held. I slowplayed the first hand a little- this goes against everything I normally do at this level, but when you hit a flop absolutely smack in the face, sometimes you have to slow down and try to let your opponent catch up. I know he calls with any part of the board, but I hold the WHOLE board here- so what can he really call with? It's a multiway flop, so I sat back and hoped to let the rest do the betting for me, and kind of keep quiet. Having seen what they wanted to do, and got a couple of customers, I decided to lead the turn, and see where it gets me. Thankfully, someone wanted to play ball (they may have got it in on flop, who knows- but the pair pretty much sealed it).
Second hand- easy call preflop with the odds being offered. Should have raised less, but never mind. On the flop, bit of a no-brainer really- hoped someone else would hop along, but no dice.
Third hand- I have aces. Raise big, get callers, get the money in ASAP on unpaired board. Brick the flush draw, stack opponent. Simples. These are the kind of hands though where variance can be a stinker- thankfully not today.
4th hand was a bit interesting- where your thoughts on where you are change from street to street. I'm absolutely convinced I'm ahead preflop. On the flop, I'm suddenly wary that I've gone behind to A8/78/89 etc, and went for pot control. When he instachecked on turn, I'm now putting him on a deuce or pp from 33-77 instead of an 8, but in no mood to inflate the pot- if I bet and he snap raises me, I'm gonna feel like an idiot. When the river comes down an 8, he knows I don't have an 8- I equally know he doesn't. I DO think he has a house though, and that's hard to lay down. I know whatever house he has, mine is basically always better- so it has to be a value raise on the end here. Turns out all my carefully worked considerations were in vain, since he had Q high. But he called my raise on the end, so what they hey- all's well that ends well!
"For me, it's smacking me in the face every which way- not only am I getting sucked out on and not hitting, but when I do hit massive- everyone's folding."
Hi,
Still enjoying your posts! Not read ALL the responses but I was wondering, are you giving too much away on your playing style to your competitors by posting this way?? I also sometimes think this about the TV coverage of the cash tables.
I'll answer this two ways. Firstly, by the NL4 standard- if anyone playing there is good enough to read the forums, read my posts and adjust their game according to how I play, then they're someone I don't want to get involved with in the first place. Regs who are good at the game know how NL4 works anyway, and it's pretty easy to spot the guys who know what they're doing, and it's significantly +EV to stay well away from them. If I get involved with a fellow reg at NL4, the only likely way I'm stacking them is by a cooler, and I'm as likely to be on the wrong side of that as they are, so why get involved? If they read this and stay out of my way when I raise, this is to be desired- I'll make my money off the people who have no idea how to fold 2nd pair no kicker.
The reason I haven't been getting paid is just variance- pure and simple. I've had hands and my opponent has had nothing to pay me off with- that's what poker's like, even down at NL4. The requirement to get paid off at NL4 is infinitely lower than at higher levels (i.e any pair is normally good enough) but they still need SOMETHING, mostly. I'm really not concerned that any NL4 fish have any insight on my game- they don't even know their own
The second way, which is a general answer to sharing your 'poker wisdom' on forums, or playing on the live cash shows, is it's a constant challenge to us as a poker player. What we should NOT ever do, is become predictable (NL4 is an exception where predictability is, thankfully, an easy way to make money). On TV shows you can use what's called 'advertising', which is purposefully making a wild play, a hero call, anything that makes you look incredibly loose and aggressive, which means you have an image you can use to your advantage. Tom Dwan, to name one, has an image of a maniac because he occasionally pulls off these lunatic 3 barrel bluffs and 7bets on the flop with 8 high- now people think that's all he does. When he flops a set or something, he gets paid monstrously because of that.
Players who are notoriously nitty, like Chris Ferguson, rarely get involved without the goods- and people know that. They also know with their hand strength, they're hard to push off once involved. So they can slip the odd bluff through thanks to this TV image.
Everyone on Sky does the same- Lolufold and Ljames have maniac images, Gliterbabe has a rock image. They can use that to their advantage- to get paid, and to pull off bluffs. You just have to be aware of how people perceive you and adjust accordingly- a good player should always be capable of shifting gears if they think people are on to them.
In general at lower limits, this doesn't apply because players simply aren't good enough to read table image. Which is why ABC poker works at the low levels, and as you go up through the levels you have to start becoming a little more creative to get paid at the higher limits.
Good Luck Deuces! I plan to start a challenge like this in the near future. Totally agree that 4NL is ALL about discipline and playing ABC. Keep posting here. Great Thread!
been reading this with interest until you try it for any length of time, people dont understand how frustrating this level can be given the ranges of people who play at nl4 i hope you don't have the "running bad" time i'm having at present, which is why i'm on a cash break and looking at hand histories. i think you've hit the nail on the head though when you said that when you run bad you push it more and if you still don't hit you start to play worse. that's taken me a while (and some money!) to realise. i think this can happen more frequently at nl4 especially when you see what you were beaten with! good luck m8, i've been trying to get off here a while, but i don't/can't put the time in. work and a young family. what length are the sessions you're playing? how many tables are you playing?

Although it was only a tiny profit, actually had quite a good session. Got a bit unlucky to have a whole buyin stacked on a river card, but also managed to get a couple hands hold up- thankfully got my money in good every time though, so not too concerned about the outcome.
When you're rolled for a level, as long as you're making correct mathematical decisions at least 90% of the time, you should be making money. As long as you play the pot odds correctly, or get your money in ahead, you're going to be a winning player. The fact donks keep drawing out on you is tilting as anything, but it's one of those things that goes with the level.
Checked my winning hands again;
Pots of 20p or more- Won 32, lost 21 Pots of 40p or more- Won 20, lost 12 Pots of 80p or more- Won 11, lost 5
Ratios are, interestingly, very similar to my last session- almost identical. This is good, because it means I'm playing a consistant game- I come in for a raise of ~20p almost every time I enter a pot, so that means I played 53/600 hands. In addition, I played 29 hands in which I won/lost between 8-20p, which would be weak limped hands and smaller raises- speculative hands to hit a flop or fold. In total, I played around 14% of hands (82/100), not counting c/f BB. I think 15% of hands is probably a decent area to aim for at NL4.
Had some nice juicy pots today! First one was played perfect, unfortunately they spiked the river- but never mind. This is where it's nice being the full stack- I can play this that aggressively, knowing that if I do get outdrawn- I'm not getting totally stacked. TPTK here is good enough to slowplay with their stacks, I could have got it in on the flop easily enough but the money was going in anyway, I just wanted to make sure I got him to commit his chips first.
The next hand was sick, and one of the very few times I've been stacked here- I rarely get that involved against big stacks. But I'm not absolutely sure how I could get away from this- I did actually tank the river before calling, but checked both streets- that's hard to fold. Considering I hold the nut straight, and donks DO make these shoves with random hands, could have had trips even- I think I had to call it off. Made a note, and saw him shove once or twice more with the nuts. Know what to expect now.
Not proud of how I played the last hand. Very poor IMO- I was making the betting happen at least, thinking my queen+flush draw was live, so wanted to build up a pot for when I hit, rather than weakly checking and having no value when it gets there. I don't think that's a profitable strategy, and the river call... debatable, but it's the sort of bet you see all the time, top pair reasonable kicker is a good enough hand mostly there.

Anyway, happier things- winning pots! YAY!
First hand. We had some previous here, and I think this is a golden example of why not to show your cards. I had a really strong read that he was at it, and at a different level- I may have gone with my gut and pulled the trigger, I was sure he was acting on me having missed the flop- but a) I didn't have the balls to go with it, and b) making stupid allin bluff plays at NL4 is a quick way to get yourself stacked. I was right, but I think also right not to go nuts. He was obviously quite proud of his bluff though, and wanted to show it off to me.
Big mistake.

With notes made, this made it much easier in this next spot- I might be a little more cautious against other players with large stacks, but I was pretty sure my 9s were good here. Turns out his hand was hella stronger than I was expecting, and it was closer to a flip- but I got through it. ^^

Next hand- always worth completing in the SB with an ace, I feel. If no one raises, it's relatively unlikely there's a big ace out there (always a possibility of a limp in, but mostly they do something mental like jam allin) and if you flop an ace, as long as you bear in mind your kicker problems, you can probably win a reasonable pot.
I'm liking my hand so far on the flop, but not enough to go crazy- best to just control the pot. On the turn I'm liking it a lot more, and pump it up nice. Villain is the same guy who stacked me house over straight, so there's a little metagame going on. On the river, I make a value raise, and he clicks it back. Now, I've seen him jam with the nuts before- so my thought process was that he is unlikely to have the nuts here. Feels more like a weak raise, but he may have enough of the board to call so I push right back over. Gets a call from second pair top kicker- result! If he reships on me, I think I then have to fold- but I would have been incredibly surprised if that happened.

Final hand was standard as. AQvsKQ on Q high board- the money's going in. Open shove made it even easier- that's simple to call, if it had been raise/reraise/rereraise etc I would have been a little less happy. Nothing to get too excited about, since if it had been the other way round I'm pretty sure I stack off too.
Walesboy- I generally play between 3-6 tables depending on how I'm feeling, and average around 500 hands a day, mostly evening. Not sure how many hours I play but it's probably in the region of 2-3 hours on average.
I totally agree with you on the running bad- if you're playing NL4 optimally for the maximum output, variance is as much a risk as anywhere else. Getting your money in good doesn't guarantee profit. So yea, had my share of bad beats and coolers, but on the whole I'm still doing ok- so nothing to be too concerned about! Luck always evens out eventually.
GL with breaking out of NL4- I'm hoping to move up before I hit 10k hands played. Here's hoping for some run good. ^^

MARATHON session (for me). Only played 2 hours, but was 8 tabling for the first time, and crammed best part of 1k hands in. Broken the 1k barrier for monthly poker points and league points (was around 600 for the month when I started this, so around 400 points earned in just shy of 6k hands. But, that's NL4- can probably improve a lot on that up the ladder.)
I think the key to playing this many tables is purely rhythm. You have to find a rhythm and settle into it, where decisions are automatic and you can flow between tables. Any more than 4 tables and I can't see them all on my screen, so 8 tables are overlapping all over the place, and at first it can be a little daunting.
Interesting on the pot ratios- I actually lost more big pots than I won, which is good considering I ended up for the session. That means my fundamentals are well on track, and I'm playing good solid TAG poker- it's nice if the big pots go your way, but they can't always. In honesty, I think I played poorly in the big pot poker, and was actually lucky to hit as many as I did, with one or two exceptions. I made some poor decisions.
First major losing hand- pretty hand that plays quite well postflop, I don't always take a punt on these but there's no harm in playing a small % of them. Flop was decent, not sure I have to bet it but went for it. Turn was a serious wtf moment- improved my hand dramatically, but I think it was a poor call. Played the guy before and have some notes (a lot more now), which ruled out him having a house- didn't think he had the 7, put him on either weak ace or the spade draw, or potentially a totally random hand. I was certain I had 15 live outs, giving me around 32% equity (as it turned out I had 18 outs, giving me 39% equity)- I was being asked to pay £3.23 to win £4.83, so I think I needed 40% equity to make the call (I'm still not certain I'm getting that calculation right, but I think that's correct). Mathematically, it was a poor decision- but I see him semi-regularly, and the notes are good to have. I was also incredibly close to the required equity, but that doesn't excuse it. This was quite early in the session, I was still finding my feet a little.
Second hand- well, the warning signs were there but the day I fold KK on a low paired board at NL4 for these effective stacks are when I should be giving up. I'd actually seen him fold some hands preflop, so I figured a 6 makes a small part of his range compared to all the other pps he plays, and random high cards.
Third hand- I like it all till the river, then I'm not absolutely sure. Flush draw complicates things a touch- but nothing he's done suggests a flush or straight draw, I'm pretty sure at this point he had something on the flop, and the turn+river haven't really done anything to change that (at least, you wouldn't expect them to). I think if he has a reasonably strong king, he calls me down- the fact he called with 2 pair means he clearly wasn't concerned about the flush or straight, so he calls me with TPGK. Unlucky that the turn paired him up, but I think that probably is the best way to play it still.
Last hand was not long before I stopped playing- kings against jacks aipf- standard bad beat, can't win em every time. Anytime I can push my stack over the line preflop and get action with kings, I'm happy regardless of the result.

My winning hands- the first one was a disgusting cooler which I was on the right side of, thankfully. Set over set is never pretty, and I'd be 100% stacking off if it was reversed, so nothing to get carried away with.
Second hand (sorry Tintin) I played like a total donk. Flop+preflop is fine, but my turnplay was appalling. No reg is calling me there with a hand like A5-7 for top pair or a gutshot, or at least- if they do, it makes a small part of their range. Far more likely is a set or 56 for made straight here, the board isn't very draw heavy where a reg's concerned. I should have shut down on turn, and *maybe* called a bet- I think I probably should fold to a bet there. Killer river card for another cooler I ended up on the right side of.
My third and final big winning hand was actually a mistake preflop- because I was flicking through tables so fast I accidentally 3bet on the button, not realising the action before until it was too late. Still a good hand in position at least- 2 overs, backdoor fl draw and oesd was plenty on flop, and there was no way I was folding with the odds I was given on turn- I figured I almost certainly had 15 outs for my 32% equity, and I only needed like 16% or so to make the call. A little lucky to hit on the river, but then- I had a near identical hand earlier which I lost, so it balances out. Kind of had a justice to it too- I made a poor mathematical play and call earlier, and missed- this time I made a good play and mathematical call, and got rewarded. Who says poor play always gets rewarded here on Sky?
You say you play around 3-6 tables at a time with 25 BI's, I'm on just £48 right now, would you say playing a tight NL4 game should allow me to play 2 tables now or best to wait till I get to around £60 ? (yes I'm a dirty nit lol)

Dude, you know what your doing so I would defo open up at least 2 tables. The more tables but with a tighter opening range the better imo. You would have to go on a pretty sick run or be a proper tilt monkey to go bust with the way you approach the game.
Nice one Dueces, been following the thread with interest and knew it wouldn't take long till you started racking up some BI's. Hopefully the run continues.

Through the night, managed to keep the mice fine. Energetic, rolling about, drinking. Fed them about half nine this morning, still ok- went to feed them again around half eleven, and two have died, with the third looking extremely lifeless and barely responding to food.
Really, really upset now
Never mind, I stacked him later.
Was a fun game and i always thought you were a nit before last night lol QJ hand i got very lucky not a bad move though still
, 2nd hand as dohhh said thats like the nuts in last nights game how i didnt bink is beyond me
lol
I was £16 up on 6 seater, £8 on the 10 seater run good much :P
dunno why its writing in bold?? oh yeah was nice of Boonicon & crazyben to join us and LOL Raise but i was too tired to carry on then did watch a bit though silently
not sure i did though! were you guys all drunk!! lol! was fun to watch though and if i'd had a spare 4 or 5 buyins to lose i might have joined you. then again the way the hands were going they would have probably lasted about 3 minutes
UNITED ARE CHAMPIOOONNNNSSSSSSSS
!!!!!!!!

Sadly Loonytoons, you're probably right.
Really enjoying your thread.
Question for you tho .. Why don't you play DYM's in your challenge?

Ugh, really thought this was going to be another losing session. Got my money in miles ahead twice early on, only to end up getting outdrawn for reasonably large pots- was down a buyin having played some really solid, aggressive ABC poker for an hour. Thankfully over the next hour and a half turned it round with similar play, but hands holding a little better this time. Relief.com. I was starting to think maybe I'd made an error somewhere in how I was approaching the game. As an aside, I decided to check my stats on how I'm doing in the smaller pots;
Pots of 20p or more- Won 32, lost 19
Pots of 40p or more- Won 20, lost 9
Pots of 80p or more- Won 9, lost 4
Just wondering.
GL + keep posting!

Thanks for taking the time to explain that! Good to know.

p.s. Didn't Ljames fold KK pre once?? ;-)
until you try it for any length of time, people dont understand how frustrating this level can be given the ranges of people who play at nl4
i hope you don't have the "running bad" time i'm having at present, which is why i'm on a cash break and looking at hand histories. i think you've hit the nail on the head though when you said that when you run bad you push it more and if you still don't hit you start to play worse. that's taken me a while (and some money!) to realise. i think this can happen more frequently at nl4 especially when you see what you were beaten with!
good luck m8, i've been trying to get off here a while, but i don't/can't put the time in. work and a young family.
what length are the sessions you're playing? how many tables are you playing?

Although it was only a tiny profit, actually had quite a good session. Got a bit unlucky to have a whole buyin stacked on a river card, but also managed to get a couple hands hold up- thankfully got my money in good every time though, so not too concerned about the outcome.
When you're rolled for a level, as long as you're making correct mathematical decisions at least 90% of the time, you should be making money. As long as you play the pot odds correctly, or get your money in ahead, you're going to be a winning player. The fact donks keep drawing out on you is tilting as anything, but it's one of those things that goes with the level.
Checked my winning hands again;
Pots of 20p or more- Won 32, lost 21
Pots of 40p or more- Won 20, lost 12
Pots of 80p or more- Won 11, lost 5
