Plugging the leaks

edited May 2011 in Poker Chat
I've got some pretty serious leaks in my game and I've known about them for some time but still can't seem to rectify them. Won't mention specifically what they are, although anyone that's played me will probably already know anyway lol. I just can't seem to get myself in the mindset to change and stop making the same horrible plays when I'm in good positions to do well. Whether it be a SnG or an MTT. The main problem I think is these bad habits have firmly set in over the last 4 years. Has anyone got any ideas on how to break out of the mould? I know it will be difficult, but after my last exam will have the whole summer to work at it!

Thanks in advance,
Matt

Why are you posting looking for advice on leaks when you already know what they are?
Seems to me you already know the answer to your question.

Know what they are, but I can't seem to stop doing them. It's like a mental block, where these plays are just automatic but very wrong. It's more of a question about getting in the correct mindset to alter them, if anyone else has experienced similar. It's difficult to explain, it's like you click the buttons 'call' 'raise' or 'fold' automatically in spots where you know in the back of your mind its wrong but you're just so used to doing it. I'm sure there must be someone on here that can identify with this haha.

just take your time with every decision and say to yourself 'is this a good play' 'should i be doing this' etcetc

Haha don't let S.S. fool you. I run better than a 6 legged grey hound at times (I presume they would run very well..) Glad you can feel my pain though.

Simple and very good advice, thanks LOL_RAISE. I think I just react to situations which can work in some spots but is horrible a lot of the time. Need to plan ahead of time what the right play is in the event I get raised or flatted etc. Boy this will be hard work haha.

....If in doubt, just use the 'time bank' before making a decision :)

Oh, I can see a flaw in my plan!

One way to avoid repeating errors is to talk to yourself.

Imagine you have someone sat with you as you play. Describe to ''them'' what you are doing and thinking on every hand. Explain why you have folded - explain why you are raising - describe the board texture - explain your read on other players.

Go through an entire session and see how you fare. I know a player who does this regularly and swears by it, although he says it doesn't work so well live.

ps. If a yellow van, with men in white coats, arrives - it's for you :o)

That sounds like a great idea, although normally play sitting alongside my girlfriend on the sofa, so may have to retreat to the spare room before I life tilt her while she's watching 'Stenders.

Another great idea, thanks pod, really do appreciate it. Although I might have to play through the tv as I'd be pushed to even 1 table mini-view lol.
