H. Macey/The Cooler.

edited May 2011 in Area 51
How do, probably wrong section for this but probably get more interesting input in here :)

I finally got round to watching The Cooler with WH Macey last night and it was a bit of an eye opener.

Did some research on T'internet afterwards and was totally unsurprised that the concept for the film was factual and had been (likely still is) fairly standard within the industry.  Not the story being factual, the concept.

If you havent seen it, the premise is that casinos employ god awfully unlucky players to sit next to high roller heaters to "cool" them off, in player vs house games.

Bit of a mind trip really.  May be indulgent superstition, but the fact that multi billion dollar enterprises made the practise standard really makes you question luck/variance self fulfilling prophecy and such.

    What do they do?

Sit an unlucky player near a lucky player in the hope that the bad luck spreads?

What if it ends up working the other way and the winning players good luck spreads to the unlucky player?

I guess they have faith in the poor unlucky sod :)

i guess if they were on a weekly wage and the profits gained (if any) would go back to the casino then this would be a really good idea

Thats the point though, they dont ever end in profit.  They just bet the min, in all likelyhood loosing in player vs house games, dragging down the high rollers.

The film being the dramatic end, the reality being less so.  It still gives you something to think about.

it is a an interesting point, can the house sit house players next to winning players...

sounds like a proven business plan..and let s face it businesses are out to make profit, and in this day and age, profit maximisation...

    :)
