Poker Magazines, Books, Sites.?

edited May 2011 in Poker Chat
Hi,

Was wondering what people thought of poker magazines?  Is there a GOOD monthly mag?

Likewise with books.  Are there any people could recommend for a beginner?

Or will I learn more by using my money playing?

Also, is there a "MUST HAVE" poker site (other than this one of course!) in your favourites?

TIA

TBH I don't think magazines have much to offer that you can't get for free online. IMO they are mainly aimed at players who have no internet, I'd save your money if I were you.

There are loads of good book out there, it depends what you're looking for specifically. As a tournament player I always recommend the Harrington on Hold 'em series for beginners and the Winning Poker Tournaments One Hand at a Time books for established players looking to improve.

Two Plus Two poker forum is widely considered the 'must have' poker forum (after Sky of course). It is packed with tons of high-quality free strategy advice and is used by all sorts of poker players worldwide from novices up to famous professionals.

+1  for Harrington on holdem VOL 1. Its for early stages of mtts but good explanation of basics means a lot of it is useful in cash games too. Great book to learn basics from

I get poker player magazine once a month, it keeps you upto date with all the goss and tells you which sites have the juciest tournies for the next month. It does various strategy articles, some of which are a bit repetitive tbh. If you subscribe online you get it for something ridiculous like £10 a year or so.

Best poker books I have ever read are probably "Every hand revealed" by Gus Hansen.  He literally explains why he played every single hand the way he did, when he won the Aussie Millions

I have read a few autobiographies but by far and way the best of them was "The Godfather of Poker" by Doyle Brunson. What a life this man has led, it is extraordinary, the term legend is overused a lot, but in Doyles case he really is a true legend.

I used to buy a few strategy books, but couldn't be bothered reading them, so put them as a job lot and sold them on ebay!!

I think the best way to learn is practise - freerolls, low stake MTT,s etc  , but i,ve also subscribed to this one for a one off payment of £12 you get 1 mag a month for a year. Before this i,ve bought the odd one from WH smiths which are generally around £3 - As sighKO said they can be good for highlighting the bests tournaments to play on-line for extra value and sometimes give out passwords for protected freerolls

You can download most of these books online for free athough if you prefer to have the actual book , you can get most of them on ebay
