edited May 2011 in The Poker Clinic

I seem to lose of potential money by not value betting the turn or river always scared someone will come over the top  with a re-raise, easy to value bet with the nuts but what if you don't have the nuts just a very good hand but could be beaten any tips? i have an example to ilistrate

Raise much bigger on flop, 800 minimum then jam turn.

This hand is a beauty of an example of what i was saying the other day, the bin bet through streets acting as a stop bet.  She bets what?  80 (1BB) into 760 on the flop, opting to call the raise.  It just is bonkers poker, but it does shutdown the action.  Mentally you know you're either hugely ahead (pretty clear at turn + river in this particular hand) or crushed.  But it is the tiny lead that warps the sensor.

I think you really have to listen to lolfold and grantarino on this matter though, as it kind of plugged a leak in my game/altered my line somewhat.  Value bet value bet valuebet, dont make the mistake of betting for info then shutting it diwn.  Valuebet then reasses if played back at, rather than lead out (probe/info) with the worst case scenario in mind.  If they do come back at you, nowt can be done.  But the fear robs you of value.

EDIT am not saying jump in with two feet in marginal spots.  Just if theres a strong likelyhood youre ahead, dont fear the minority of hands ahead, unless action dictates you need to reassess.

The key to value betting is to bet as much as possible which you think will get a call
You can only do this by putting the villian on a hand and you think your ahead

anything else is just throwing chips/money away

if you think he will come over the top then your not in a spot to value bet

think the check is fine - the opponents check indicates no flush, and he'd bet out with trip 10's, which does signal a 9 or a lower PP, but the stacks are awkward and you can't really bet fold here, a small bet of 300ish would be fine, but you'd be in such a bad spot if he were to shove!
