Sunday's live show - with James, Ian & soumi ***OFFICIAL THREAD***

edited May 2011 in Poker Chat
We're live at 9pm - with coverage of the £12,500 Guaranteed Primo and the last Viva Las Vegas Final of 2011!

Which Sky Poker player will be joining the other VLV qualifiers at The Rio in July?  Who'll take down a four-figure score and this week's Primo title?  And, most importantly, who'll win the caption competition in my blog?  Find out this evening on channel 865 with Hartigan & 'The Raiser'.

Ian and I will be joined in the studio by special guest analyst Seth 'soumi' Webber.  Seth's a Brighton-based pro with on-line winnings of nearly $200,000.  He qualified for last year's Poker Million on Sky Sports, played against some of the biggest names in the game - including Tom Dwan, Erik Seidel and Michael 'The Grinder' Mizrachi - and made it to the final, eventually finishing sixth.

Questions for Seth?  Post them in this forum thread, or e-mail skyopen@bskyb.com

Also, please contribute to tonight's hot topic...

Undiscovered gems: TV shows, books, bands, movies, etc. that you love - but no-one else has heard of!

One of the funniest movies I've ever watched: a French movie about a guy who gets moved from the French Rivera to The north of france with the French Post Office.

In French the movie was called "Bienvenue chez les Ch'tis", it was translated to "Welcome to the sticks" for the english version.

Some classic scenes, where the local sayings are somewhat confusing.  And another scene where he gets pulled over by the police for driving too slowly on his way up to the north.  The cop feels so sorry for him he lets him off

If you do watch this film, watch it in French with subtitles,  by far the funniest way to watch it

    James,

The last Vegas Semi-Final is at 17:00, not in the highlighted section, (10 runners)

Why is there a Vegas Qtr-Final at 17:00 in the highlighted section? (15 runners)
What tourney will they be qualifying for?

Edit: There's also a £26 Vegas Semi Direct 16:10,(5 runners) to a Semi at 21:00?

What's going on Sky? (last week it was direct sats for Saturday running on Wednesday).

    Edit: Undiscovered gem,

The Skypoker guide to checking the tourney lobby entries (for Dummies).

Tv show : The Wire. I know you're a fan James, and it seems strange to talk of such a critically acclaimed show as a "hidden" gem, but it always astounds me the amount of people that have either not seen or even heard of it. Better than 98% of Hollywood's drivel folks, trust me.

    The Wire forum thread

Books : Love John Fante (hence username) and in one of his short stories he quoted "Jurgen, A Comedy of Justice" by James Branch Cabell. I read it whilst sitting alone in a London Travelodge bar with a bottle of red. I was crying with laughter much to the bemusement of the people around me. Very recommended. For anyone into crime lit I'd also hugely recommend the prison novels of Edward Bunker (Mr. Blue in Reservoir Dogs).

Movies : I'll give a boost to the Brit film scene with a couple here. Dead Man's Shoes. Brilliant film and one I've watched many times. And Nil by Mouth, coincidentally starring Ian Frazer's twin brother Ray Winstone. Brilliantly bleak film. And if you can handle subtitles then Park Chan-Wook's vengeance trilogy are just about the best films I've ever seen.

Band : The Go! Team. If you can listen to The Go! Team without smiling you just don't have a soul. Wiki's description, "They combine indie rock and garage rock with a mixture of blaxploitation and Bollywood soundtracks, double dutch chants, old school hip hop and distorted guitars". How can you not love that?

Best Film: Evil Roy Slade........some of the funniest lines in history OR Emperor's New Groove....
Best Band: Deaf School........hugely influencial band.......no Deaf School, no Madness or Dexy's........

'The Royle Family' is an under-rated sitcom.

Rugby League is an under-rated sport.

Tom Huddlestone is an under-rated footballer.

the_don90 is an under-rated poker player!!

I have a couple of hidden gems. the first one is a blatant plug for a book my little brother Keith Sykes wrote about 5 years ago, "Tom" is the title.

Secondly, a Wes Craven film that no-one seems to have heard of, but i think it's one of the best films i've seen.    " The Serpent & the Rainbow". A film set in Haiti about voodoo, starring Bill Pullman & Cathy Tyson

Undiscovered TV gem must be Orford presenting the game show Distraction, funnily enough when ever I cant sleep its on about 5am in the morning on challenge TV, I can see why its called challenege TV, it's a challenge to watch it!! So glad he's been able to move on from what would I call the 'dark days'

1 favour I do ask, I cant actually watch the show tonight but can you give Sky Dave a bit of a rub down from me, I actually won the caption comp this week the 1st time I have entered and sky dave was giving out stick that the winner spelt mancini wrong, can you just give a shout out that before he gives grief out on spelling, just make sure he hands out the free entry prize TO THE RIGHT PERSON!! lol

Hope OHMYGOD enjoyed my free tourney entry ;)

O,K for the life off me i can`t remember the film, but it was a foreign polish film so off course subtitled, anyway my dad an myself where watching it, and it was quite good even reading the subtitles, so after 35 mins the characters laughted when my mum pipped up with, at least there laughing in english, that was it we could watch any more as we where both wettiing ourself with so much laughter

Slight correction as Orford actually hosted Defectors and Jimmy Carr hosted both the UK and US versions of Distraction which for me was a very under-rated game show.....

    That is all!.....

Any comment on the VLV final please Mandy? It started without the semi winners and is now in limbo. We're all a bit stuck without any info.

I stumbled across a book called The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho several years ago.  It's about an Andulusian sherpherd boy called Santiago & I loved it.  Several friends have borrowed it over the years, and not once person has failed to enjoy it.  So, if you come across it in a bookstore then BUY IT!!

I know this hand isn't from the Primo but I'd be interested in your thoughts on this play I just made in the £2.20 deepstack that went very wrong for me.  the hand Id is #376686290

I had a healthy stack and the short stack min raises under the gun.  As his stack was so short I felt he was pot committed and my Ace high might be good against against one other player so shoved all in to hopefully isolate and hopefully get weak Aces that are beating me to fold.

In this situation it didn't work but what are your thoughts on this play?

    Evening gents.

I have a question for seth (apologies if I spelt his name wrong!). It was interesting to hear that he focuses soley on mtt and that cash is a leak for him.

In his opinion is it also possible to grind out a living playing STT. I specialise in HU sng at lower stakes and have started to build a roll. I want to start playing higher stakes. Like seth cash is a massive leak for me.

Also would it be possible for sky to have more live programmes focusing on STT's. I remember on Poker Night Live a few years ago they used to have a play the presenter 9 max game which was great fun to watch.

Thanks for your post Ertikins, but we are only looking at coverage from Primo and VLV this evening - I have passed your comments onto Sky_Dan though, so he may use the hand in next weeks Poker Clinic.

    Thanks

    Re: Undiscovered Gems.

In 1979, when I was 19, I walked into a record shop in Forest Hill in South London. There was a great album playing by a band called The Yachts. They disappeared without trace after doing the "difficult" second album.

Many years later I was doing the classic 40-something thing of recreating my 70's record collection from the internet and found one of their tracks on YouTube.

There are now several more tracks on there and my 28 year old daughter and her friends are massive fans.

Take a listen you'll love them! And for an up-to-date tip - check out Imperial Leisure if you love Ska!

Loving the show and hearing a propper "Saaf London" accent from Razer - ever had a drink in the Fox on the Hill Ian?

Also used to go out with a Finnish girl btw. Went to Tampere once and brought back a big bag of crisps for the kids - not because they were particularly fine - but the Finnish word for bag is Pussi, as James and Seth will doubtless know . This was a big bag and printed in big letters on the front was MEGAPUSSI!

An undiscovered gem for me would be winning a pot in the primo with pocket AA or pocket KK. Had them three times tonight (yay!), had them cracked by opponents stacking off with a flush draw (boo!). Pocket AA cracked was the fatal blow for me last time too.

    Fold 'em pre.
