why do you go through so many patches

edited June 2011 in Poker Chat
quite a simple post i just want to know why your downswings last so long and the times when you hit the world last so long. for example I have lost about 6/7 of my KK's and not once was someone holding an A. As well as that there are times when you just keep hitting the world hitting two pair and trips most hands you play, or hit your outs all the time. Is this varience because i thought varience was random eg losing a when you are 90% up 10 times out of a hundred is fine but you would think the ten times would be spread out and not clumped together in sets of 4-5. Not once have i questioned the RNG or accused anything like a doom switch etc but i would like to know peoples takes on beats being clumped together and what not

    Hi leon

It's poker, live players have been known to have 2 years, or more downswing, they last as long, or as short as they wish :), it's best to take a break from poker.

sky is the only site i have ever been on and i really like it, i think im only going to find out the answer to this is by going elsewhere. Im starting to think of the site as a bandit which by british law the percentages have to pay out at least 70%.

Im on a downswing :( cant stop getting outdrawn

Confidence is a big factor.  WHen you are winning/on an upswing you'll be playing a lot better and thus be winning more.

If you are on a downswing, it can be hard to get out of...not because its rigged etc but because your confidence will be smashed and you won't be palying your best poker.

Take a break is always a good idea.  Or change game.  If your a cash player, then try a week of just playing MTTs etc.

lol its the same any site you go to mate as acebarry said live tourney players go on brutal downswings that can last years without winning a tourney best way to get out of a downswing is either take a break come back fresh or simply play a lot more to try and get out the downswing... it wont last forever but can last a long time i havent binked anything on here for 4 months before that was a lot longer lol

Randomness brings up clusters, bigger clusters than you might expect. For example, if you toss a coin 1,000 times we all know that you will get roughly 500 heads and 500 tails. But there will be long runs of all heads or all tails. A run of 10 heads in a row might sound ridiculous, but it's actually quite common.

I've just had a whole month of non-stop terrible poker luck, several times I managed to get deep in tournaments, but it would always end in a cruel beat in a monster pot (see my thread in BBV). However, in true London bus style, my unlucky run ended today. Here on Sky I was very happy to win a Bounty Hunter Tournament, my first tournament win for at least a month. At the same time I was playing in a rebuy tournament with quite a large field on another site. I won that too for a tasty prize. In one day I have won back double what I lost during my unlucky month.

Poker is a combination of skill and luck. All you can do is keep getting it in good, when the luck goes your way too you'll be raking it in. Be patient, it will happen.

I think the reason downswings are so bad, is you get a cluster of bad beats together which play on your mind, cause you to play sub-optimal poker because in your head you think you're going to get outdrawn (which means when you do, you take even more note of them) and as a result see a dip in your performance.

When you run really good, you can start to think you're invincible, and play poor poker as a result- as soon as you stop hitting, you suddenly lose profit as an alarming rate.

THEN you hit a downswing and it really hits the fan.

Ultimately, luck has no memory and in poker, you're as likely to have a good run as you are a bad. And at any single given time, your hand can be given a % to win or lose, and that % will be the same regardless of what happened the last twenty times. We can convince ourselves otherwise, but the cold hard facts are that you're never more or less likely to win or lose than the odds dictate.

Now to convince roulette players that martingaling is never going to work. ^^

i very much agree with this, as soon as you start thinking you have already lost then you tend to. An example of this is my 7 KK were in games of HU, so to lose 6 is very rare, i got my money in good in the first 4 of these and on the last 2 played them slowly and got my money in behind. I am by no means saying the game is rigged because the simple answer is i really dont know and it is idiotic for me to even accuse it. This is not just a post about being on a big downswing as even when im on a good upswing playing poorly i take notice of this and even apologise for my awful play. I do have times when i just hit everything and to be honest i can be thinking this then also

I mainly play cash games. One thing i've noticed this month after analysing some hands i've played is when i'm on a downswing, I tend to chase losses by making calls that I wouldn't normally make.

So as Scotty77 says, downswings can affect your confidence and you can start playing differently.

delaney can i just ask if you play live and played on other sites?

If the answer is yes then its easy for you to say this. I have not done any of these so i think i might just need my confidence restored as to be honest i really love this site and the community but over the last couple of months my confidence has been knocked.

not so much live every now and then other sites yes... maybe if you feel the need to make a deposit on another site if you get a few results (in what ever you play) could be the boost you need or simply could be that you need a break watch a few videos what not try and get some confidence back in you then go back at it sometimes playing every day drains you (if you do play everyday) and can knock you down and make you feel your not playing your A game if you feel its your confidence that has taken a knock have a week or a couple weeks off until you feel fresh again

well a week and a half ago i had 30p in my account i think. I played blackjack upto £1.09. Then playing mainly HU i managed to get upto about £28. A Barca bet upto about £50. then upto £95 playing a variety of events. I lost that £95 over the last two days. This might be the reason for my outburst but if anything i think it might just be because im in a bad stage in life. In all fairness though this is something i have thought for a little while now. I have just changed my settings which will not allow me to deposit any money for about 2 weeks and i might come back fresh il post a couple of hands up now though

This said it all and had to be quoted.  Think about it.  You get QQ and a king flops.  But your big hands keep getting smashed so you check.  Someoen bets so you know you are behind and fold.  Rotten luck.  Now, same situation when you are playing well and instead of checking, you bet out.  You get one caller.  You figure if they had a king theyw ould have reraised the flop so you fire again on the turn.  They lay down.  Same cards, same situation but how you feel has made the difference nbetween winning and losing.

Sometimes too, your downswings and upswings dont last as long as you would think.  I have had some very good days this month and some very bad days.  But when I sat down today and analysed my daily profit/loss, there wasn't much variance in the figures.

Yes sometimes there are big swings but also, it can all be in the head
