When I was eleven Myself and my best friend decided to run away from the school bus stop to go and see the cricket legends Barry Richards, Andy Roberts, Gordon Greenidge wage war against Dennis Lillee and Jeff Thompson in a much anticipated Australia v Hampshire tour match We'd prepared! banana sandwiches, cornish pasties, wagon wheels, fruit salads and black jacks all packed into a puma sports bag alongside bottles of cresta and dandelion & burdock. Mission impossible had commenced! we hid in the bushes as the school bus left. Then started our ten mile trek to the county ground as we walked it started to rain and rain and rain but the motivation to see our cricketing heroes overode the cold and wet of a typical summer day in the seventies. The plan had been meticulous we arrived exactly on schedule just as the announcement of game abandoned was made! it continued to rain as we walked the ten miles home again. And just to make our day! We returned home like drowned rats and told tales to our parents of how our day at school had gone. After our elaborate lies were concluded we found to our cost the school water pipes had burst, all parents had been phoned and the whole school had been sent home. needless to say we were grounded for most of the summer and my luck hasn't changed much since!
