£12k B/H - What now with 99?

edited July 2011 in The Poker Clinic

I've been fairly aggressive (but not maniacal) and two hands previous to this I had 3-bet from the button when villain 3x raised from UTG. (He folded). That was the only hand we had clashed in so far. Villain is v.solid winning reg and has played like such so far. I have him slightly outchipped so would take his bounty if we got it in and I won. Should this even come into my thinking this deep? Thoughts from villain&what he put me on also much appreciated! 8- /> Will post result later ty. STACKS - We both have about 3k.

Yeah, he hasn't been that active and doesn't seem to have done anything out of line (he won a big pot with a flopped FH in a limped pot and got paid) -  and he's a DYM specialist (but a solid winning MTT player on scope2) so he "should" always have a hand here...

Should I make my opening raise slightly smaller, say 175 or less?

Voted fold especially cos its shanxta ;)

Sometimes tho ive seen in these events players in your posi just shovin back at them but imo im pretty sure you are behind vs AA or KK

I would open less 150-175 is good, i would call to setmine

he is obviously strong but hit or bust imo as you have position can play cheaply postflop if you miss

I fold, i wouldnt even flat to set mine cause you end up seeing a low flop like 5 8 7 which then gives you more outs and by the time you get to the river you end up either being all in and getting lucky v QQ,KK,AA or being absolutely crippled, i'd just fold and move on to the next hand Shanxta is a solid player he definitely doesnt have worse then 9s there

I would call mainly to set mine obviously get in on 678 flop but no others unless it contains a 9 , gutshots arent that tempting for me

Set mining sucks here doesn't it? especially if you're going to give up if you don't get there.

His range has 9s crushed but it doesn't mean he can't have AK/AQs, and also TT/JJ/QQ that he can fold on some boards - if you're flatting in position, it's got to be with a plan to win the hand if the 9 doesn't hit, otherwise, just fold now.

You could float like a Q high board, but if the 2nd barrell comes you're in sh!t street and have to fold anyway.

Need to be deeper to set mine/outplay him post flop I reckon. It's not a very high %age play.

i think it sucks here as you are really just throwing away chips if the board has no 9 on it and people will soon pick up on what you are doing and exploit it especially in these tournies where certain hands are replayed on the TV, he can easily have AK/AQs which still only makes the 9s just a slight favourite, im definitely not attempting to set mine here unless im 100bb deep at least
