Live play and betting structures.

edited July 2011 in Poker Chat
Hi all,
I've recently started playing live  (local poker league & small buy in tourneys at casino). I'm struggling to work out the rules re bet sizes and have made my inexperience very noticable on a couple of occasions. Is there a general rule or is it different in different venues? Watching live poker on tv people seem (post flop) to bet all sorts of amounts. In a live game last week I noticed that people were only betting amounts that were multiples of the big blind. Is this standard?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Regards

Depends were your playing at least one of the local pub leagues used to insist on multiples of the bb as the betting. Pre flop the min raise is usually at least 2*bb. Post flop you can bet anything > the bb. Best to check with the TD beore starting play to avoid giving a tell with your inexperience.

If the poker pub league is the redtooth one then a word in the td's ear the multiple bb raising went out some time last year but if they are comfrtable with it it ay be as easy to stay with it. makes some of the standard raises a bit difficult though like 2.5*bb etc.

Its called NLHE for a reason, by definition you can bet what you wish.

Pre flop the forced bet is always going to be 1BB, making all raises at least this again.

But post there is no forced bet so its always going to be at least this.

All raises/re raises going to be at least the last bet the went in again.

Using this as a guide you can bet what you wish.

Bit of advice if just starting live in casino bud, be careful of chip handling denominations.  When one chip betting announce eg blinds being 100/200 dont just through in a 500 chip for a raise as its just a call when not announced.  Try and bet with multiple denominations of chips.

But as above person said, always good to clarify any odd practices before playing.
