Tips for live poker

edited July 2011 in Poker Chat
I am hoping to play my first live poker event in the next week or two, and was wondering if people had any tips from experience that could be useful for a newbie - anything from playing style to etiquette. Thanks

Try to keep tabs on how much has gone into the pot, and how much is in your opponents stacks.  It can be difficult if you only play online and are used to having that info provided.

The first time you play live can be pretty daunting but try not to get overawed by it all and if you can relax and enjoy the experience, you should be ok.

Try to get there early to get a feel of the venue. Make sure you know what table and seat you are at well before the event starts. Have a couple of social drinks to chill out beforehand if you need them.

Live is no real difference than playing on line....you have the same starting stack as everyone else and two cards like them aswell. Try to sit back for the first couple of orbits and get used to handling the chips/knowing they value etc. Look out for the more 'experienced' player on the table who will try to bully you off pots if they sense weakness in your play. If in doubt on any action, ie..raise size, your turn to act etc, ask the dealer for confirmation.

Above all, try to use the 1st time playing live as a stepping stone to gain more confidence to use for the next time you play live.

    Remember to ENJOY it aswell.

    great advice by maxyplops

also i would add you dont need to bet as much live, standard 3 x open is more then enough in most positions unless you have a LAG table then raise it more, post flop generally it sticks to around whatever the initail raise is so sometimes your get a 200 bet into 1k which is sufficient. 1st level dont play any hands and just watch how the others are playing and standard betting patterns then adjust accordingly.

newbies best not to talk at all, even if people ask you a question you dont need to answer it just stay silent look in same space so you dont give anything away. once you have been a few times you can be a bit more social.

Best of all enjoy it, from my experiance its softer so just go with your instincts

let us know how you do and GL

You best check out the actually venue for dress code and registration if needed. It is usually free membership but you might need to take some ID down to prove age...Passport/Driving Licence etc.

Check out the Sky Poker Tour section where it gives you some idea of house rules, but like I say, it is best to check with the actual venue you are going to.

Hard to say, without knowing the venue, but jeans and trainers have been allowed in most venues I have been in.  If in doubt give the venue a call.

Great advice from YG and Maxally.

Most of all remember that you are there to enjoy yourself, good luck and let us know how it goes.

Ed, Be relaxed, be Confident!! Try & go with a friend or player of Experiance!!

    USE A CARD PROTECTOR!!

Find a dealer dealt tourney to start, rather than self-dealt, unless you are very confident with shuffling, dealing & rules, pot counts etc!!

I played for a year & 1/2 in a pub poker league, first in ma local, then spread about to 'away' games when i was doin really well, before i even tried internet, when i found Sky 2 years ago!!

May start playin again bit local this winter if i get time, maybe we can get to a venue together, monker123 & sic swans used to go to live with be, in fact they got more experiance live at few different venues, maybe we could do a HITSQUAD NITE out at a game LOL, let us know your thoughts & how you get on?

Where were you thinking of goin Ed??
