2.2-2.5x raises are effective in mtts when the blinds are 50/100+

aye, there comes a time, people will either fold, call or raise whether you raise 2 2.5 3 or 4 BB so you may as well raise smaller and help control pot size for later in the hand

besides if people want to call or raise light cause of a min-raise, all the better

does this site only advocate min raises?? never known anything like it

You make a very fair point, Sir.

The site itself does not advocate anything, it up to the players, but Channel 865, with a remit to educate & entertain, does not advocate min-raising, EXCEPT in certain circumstances where it is quite legitimate so to do.

It's one of those pecularities of poker, like checking in the dark. A lot of people do it, but very few know why, or what affect it has on pot sizes & odds. Poker players are slavish followers of fashion, & so everyone is at it now.

It's rather sad, actually, because in most cases, it is not the optimal play, but many players - on all sites - do not self-examine, & just play the same game all the time "by habit".

But it is easy to combat, if you think about it, & I love a Table of min-raisers & stations.

I was playing on a table the yesterday when it came quite apparent that one player was min raising when they had a small pair, check calling when they were on a draw and raising a little more when they had top pair or better I wish more people would play like this then it would be like playing against people with thier cards face up! :) Ps Sky please will you sit this type of player to act just before me more often!

dont know what you mean by "the site" but a lot of the top players now only min raise at the top end of a tourny as it usually gets a fold just as often as a 3xbb raise(i prefer open shoving for 30bb tho :)

hmmm, at the latter stages of tournaments, i really think min raising does become optimal if you are trying to steal the blinds a lot

people either fold or shove regardless what you raised so how is it optimal to lose more when you have to fold to a shove

and i would say its the same on every site i ever played on - early stages people tend to raise 3x and this gradually reduces to a min raise by late stages

If someone min raises at the early or mid levels of a tourney I'm always a bit suspicious they have a big pair. If they call a reraise I am definately putting them on that hand. In late stages a min raise is usually good enough to get a fold.

Fully agree with both points, Mr Headache Tablet.

The question, I think, was addressding the widespread practive of min-raising as a general rule, rather than specifically when the shoe fits.

We hope to discuss the habit of min-raising on tonight's Live Show, on Channel 865.

You have to play well post flop to be able to min raise alot pre flop.

A forum reg, and much under-rated, and under-achieving player (imo), Greghogg is very good at using the min raise well pre flop, as well as being able to cope with the difficult situations it throws up post flop.

I guess it's 1 way a nit can get more aggressive whilst maintaining a lower variance game, sticking to his nitty routes and trusting his ability to make good decisions post flop.

He plays it well, but could play it alot better. And there are people (professionals) who do play it alot better.

    Negranu is the obv 1.

There are times when min raising pre flop is a ridic idea, and the Hogmeister is competent enough to identify these spots also and adapt accordingly.

It takes alot of skill/ability to play this way effectively, I certainly can't do it, and nor can most of the random players who try it. Which is why it's good for us bish bash bosh merchants! ;)

LMAO!! I thought exactly the same when I read the title lol

I think there's a lot of min raising because of the fold/call/raise clickbuttons. If the raise option led to a 3xbb raise there would be a lot more of it. If you had to min raise manually then there would be a lot less of it. Laziness, convenience call it what you will.

I have actualy min raised early on in a torny when i have floped a st8 or nut flush or suchlike sometimes its better than checking it and trapping because you get about 4 callers and they all think its cheap and get a free card rather than you putting a bigger bet and everyone seeing you have the flush or st8 and fold, then on the turn if someone hits a card they have or they have part of the flop they think ohhhh ill take these chips now so thats when ill shove and get the lot. I might even just min raise again and then put a decent sized bet on the river as bad players think well ive come this far im going to call or they might try and bluff it and put a bigger bet in themselves, either way you just string them along and rub your hands together with an evil grin and eyebrows close together :? mwaaaahaaahahhah

c/p'ed from another thread where someone asked the same (ish)
I had to withdraw my entire roll on all sites ($5k) for some life emergency and have been unable to grind for like a year or summit. Basically I was living with my dad in a house with no internet.
In order to re-build my bankroll I have been playing for a backer, which sucks cause i have to give away 50% of my profits. Im up like $350 ($175) over 3 months, due to playing bad the first month (rusty) and running approx $3000 (at 50-100 NL lol) under EV.

Just thought I'd pop by and see how the strategy forum was and if any of the dudes I used to play were here.

Also as a side not I like the majority of the forum, it's just some of them (when I was here) were very wrong about some things strategy related and adamant that they were right. Also the whole hit n run fiasco lolz.
But anyway yeah, I might stay for a while idk, im just on just now cause I ran like suck and dont want to play anymore cause i'll play bad.
