advice for a new sky poker player

edited September 2011 in Poker Chat
OK im new to sky poker, i started like a week ago i think, maybe a lil bit longer, ive been watching sky poker tv, taking the tips from the presenters etc etc, and ive watched some amazing players playing, i had £5 in my account yesterday and so wanna try and build my Bank Roll with it.

Day 1.... ive managed to get it up to £17.00 now playing the 2p/4p levels

what kind of advice would you, the sky poker public/ or even the sky poker staff, give to somebody who is setting himself this task?

Watch mastercash on a saturday night m8. you will get some good pointers on there.

also join jenny_iyys september profit thread on here to give yourself more motivation and to let us all see how you do.

    best of luck

also forgot to say. watch out for me when i go onto the 2p/4p tables because i have this ocd type of thing where i carnt leave any odd change in my acc before logging off because its unlucky so i go onto those tables and throw away my odd change :)

Shouldnt take you too long to build a bankroll if you do that lol

    yay thank you :)
i've been on many other sites and i hated the fact that it was american money, but even more so it was my learning curve and i lost alot lets just say that lol, im finally confident in my ability and just dont wanna make stupid mistakes again which is the reason i lost my bank rolls previously xP

im greatful to any help i can get to be fair, it may seem stupid having to start at 2p/4p but hey starting with a £5 starting is never gonna be an easy task :)

I'd advise continueing to play at NL4/2p 4p for a good while longer until you're up around the £160-170 mark then try out NL8 do the same till about £200-220 then try NL10 and keep doing that till you're as high as you can go.

Also a REALLY good game to play if you have time are the deepstacks that start at £2.20 - 7.15pm and £1.10 7.45pm every night, lots of play due to great structure and a chance of a tidy cash prize if you finish high up. ;)

Main thing is though great work starting with just £5 and not going broke, if you see The_Don90 on the forum give him some advice lol !

thank you dudeskin :) who is the_don90 xD and how could i offer him advice when im the one in need of advice hehe

solid abc poker should beat nl4, there is an excellent thread in the clinic from dohhh regarding the strategy i strongly recommend you to read it. use the search to find it

also add a table once you get to 20 buy ins + and learn to multitable when you can as its more profitable, obviously get the basics first but you should do that by the time you add a table.

best of luck and welcome to skypoker, enjoy it

    Hi & welcome,

I'm also fairly new (5 months) I don't play cash, just MTT's (Multi Table Tourney's) and some DYM's (Double Your Money)  I'd recommend going over your hand history to review hands you thought you maybe played badly/well. There is a facility to post hands in "The Poker Clinic" for other, more experienced players, to assess your play and give advice.  THis has been, for me, the biggest single improver in MY game.
    Good Luck

    pad
p.s. The Don90 is a very well known cash player on the site who posts hands regularly in the clinic. have a look.

He is a Sky poker legend. You can read his diary in the forum. I advise you to do this as it's a great read and valuable information for you at nl4. It will also give you lots of insight into his game that you may well be able to exploit if you find him at your table which seems fairly inevitable at some point.
    GL m8.
p.s- Young Gun gave you some good advice there but sometimes you have to take him with a pinch of salt because he has a reputation for being a bit of a WUM.

Glad you are watching the channel and getting some tips and advice from our onscreen talent. Each live show (Thursday, Saturday and Sunday) we are setting a poker topic for viewers to get their questions in and gain advice from our experts and special guests. I would suggest you email the show at skyopen@bskyb.com or write on the official show thread should you have an questions you need answering.

I've started writing lengthy posts in Word now because of this.

You start writing on here, it says you're logged in and then you click send and logs you out resulting in your post vanishing............AAAAAARRRRRRRRGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!

    Major tilt.

I would stick with what you're doing now. Just remember there is no shortcut - you have to learn the game, improve, then learn the game again. Play within your bankroll and watch other players at higher levels and only move up when you are financially comfortable doing so.

GL with your future in poker.

lol i would love to play in my bank roll, but i started with £5 which is 1 buy in xD ive managed to get that up to 6 Buy ins now but soon im sure i will be able to stick with the rules of the bank roll management :) or go broke in the process of trying to get it up on the lowest stakes xD

anyways as recommended i posted todays hands for people to look at and criticise or advise me on how i can improve :)

    Day 2
ok so day 2, i was fast asleep most of the day so didnt really get much time to play
probably about 15-30 mins play time, there was only one key hand, i dont like the fact i was called cus i feel he was bluffing but just wonderin what you guys think, should i of called him???

The thing is messing up so i will type out the hand
    sillymunchie dealt 10S 10H - Raise 20p
Duttster1 - call from the big blind

    Flop - 3D QH 5H

    Duttster1 - checks
    Sillymunchie - raises 23p
    Duttster1 - Raises £1.15
    Sillymunchie - folds
    Duttster1 - Mucks

anyways still made 50p profit for today which isnt bad since i only plyed for 30 mins
and i did play a 1 dollar tournament on another poker site which i won $7 from it, so im happy for finishing 4th/80 and its thanks to the help of people from this site. thank you for making me a more confident player

Re: the hand in question you have to fold really, played it fine but maybe put what position you are next time although as its a heads up pot dont think it matters as much as we can see you have position.

Wd on your cash on the other site, i have just posted in you clinic thread and bumped up one which is useful for you.
  • edited September 2011
only reason i didnt put the position is because it was between the two of us, he was big blind so i was in position lol
but i think i was one off the button
  • edited September 2011
Probably the only reason you think the player is bluffing is because it was hu between you both. If it was a multiway pot and somebody else made the same move you would snap fold.

If the player was bluffing just say well played and move on.

Hi silly and welcome to the site, you seem to be doing fine at 2p/4p so keep on doing what you are doing and you will build your bankroll.I would agree with Dudeskin that the deepstacks are great tournaments to play as you get lots of poker for a small buyin and you get some decent players at this level.

Another great tournament on the site is the Monday night DTD well worth a look at.
  • edited September 2011
what does DTD stand for :S lol i will look into some of these tournaments as i much prefer tournaments im just not bank rolled for em xD lol

    T....8.30Take on tikay
    D....7.45 Deepstack.

Anyone is more than welcome to join. All for just £5.50. Come over to the DTD thread and reg if you would like to join.

Wise decision. I wish you well in spinning your BR up.

Just to let you know though, it £5.50 TOTAL for all THREE MTT's (a £2.20 Deepstack, a £1.10 Deepstack* and £2.20 Take on Tikay)

*perhaps you could consider just playing the cheaper Deepstack to get the feel of Tournament play.
  • edited September 2011
tournament play is my preference ^_- lol made a few final tables on other site so when i have a bigger roll you will definately see me up in the tourneys, i may even do the odd pound deepstack :)
