swapping seats on a cash table?

edited September 2011 in Poker Chat
Is this good tactics or bad etiquette?

Playing nl4 I'd been doing quite nicely off of a particular player until he binked a straight with 88 aipf against my AA. He then stood, waited for a very short time (may have been 1 orbit but sure it wasn't any more) and then sat back in with position on me and shoved any hand I was involved in. Made it plain in chatbox what he was up to and why.

Chatbox didn't bother me, and unfortunately someone else bust him before I got a chance, but thought the seat change was peculiar. Any thoughts?

if hes shoving any hand youre involved in, pick your spot and go for a dbl up

i often switch seats to get posision on a player who i think is a fish. in your spot pick a range and call. print money and go to bed a little richer.

Sounds to me as though you where up on this villian though, and he was tilted

Yep what don said , if i can spot a fish or two i take the earliest opportunity to get position on them , funnily enough a couple of days ago at 5p/10p i noticed a player gettin all of the hands and action and for some reason he left when doin so well , i quickly sat in his seat and run like god for a while bustin a couple of players and only left when it startin fillin up with more nitty players.

It's important to get position on good, aggressive players to your left.
There is no etiquette issue you can sit where you like. The good player will know tho why you moved.

Yeah it's not bad etiquette at all, you can sit in which ever seat is free.

If you watch any of the high end cash tables you will see players swapping all of the time.

    I never knew that.

I've never really seen it done but I would guess it's bad etiquette...

Loading up a table and there being 2 spaces free and you picking the one that's best for you is fine but to specifically go out of your way to stand up, then sit back down straight away in a 'better' position is a bit cheeky. You could also get people doing it nonstop because you sit to someone's left because you know they're aggresive so they move, then are you gonna move again? Nah just play your game and be capable of changing it up depending on your position/who's blinds are your button etc.

I don't think it is but i can understand why he would think it. He is a monster player and enjoys the profitability of battering lesser players in position.

If I'm on a table OOP against an AWFUL MANIAC who keeps Min3betting me I will insta move to his left given half a chance as then I can have some control and makes it easier to play all round.

Can't imagine how it is bad etiquette, I would MUCH rather be persecuted for 5 minutes then continue to play in a bad position when I could get more value somewhere else (also I'm always on miniview so never see chat anyways lol).

i do seat swap, very rarely but i do mostly when taking shots at higher than nl300

its bad etiquette becuase you are basically saying 'you are bad and i want to play lots of pots vs you'

it can also be really bad for the games when the weak players realise that people keep sititng on their left which is super super super obvious and can make them feel uncomfortable/hunted by the other players

its obv +ev short term but could quite easily be -ev longterm when these players stop depositing because people are just chasing them around.

its the same thing when regs insta sit out and leave tables as soon as the weaker player busts/leaves

or when regs just sit out at a 6max table waiting for the weaker players. there are probably <5regs who will actually start games />nl100 on this site. people dont seem to realise that playing hu for 10mins when edges are going to be very marginal vs 2 regs is worth it when you start games up and get weaker players joining

    rant over
