Sky Poker Forums is upgrading its look! Stay tuned for the big reveal!
PTP tonight. And now for something completely different.....
Apart from playing the 8.30pm "Take-on-tikay" tonight, I'm going to devote the entire evening to LOW LiMIT Omaha Cash - 5p-10p, & 10p-20 mainly.
Time we did a bit more Omaha, & I'm up for it, so if anyone fancies some, look me up. Like, on the Table, I don't mean "call me"......
Tonight is is, then.
What about a few Omaha "tips" for beginners?
Well I'll chuck in a few, if you do, too. The more the merrier, eh?

Bad Aces can be effectively a "flip" against a solid Omaha Starting hand.
A-A-9-3 (no suits) is only a very marginal favourite against, say, 9-10-J-Q double suited - about 55/45.
In most Hold Em hands, heads up, Aces would be something like 75/25 minimum against any hand.
In Hold Em, hands like A-K & A-Q are always deemed fairly big hands, as are A-A, K-K, & Q-Q, obv.
Without back-up, they are near useless in Omaha. "One pair" is almost never enough to win the Pot - your hand MUST haver potential to IMPROVE. In Hold Em, we want our hands to "hold", in Omaha we ALWAYS need our hand to IMPROVE.
Think improvers" & "extensions" when that flop comes down.
Most Omaha is played "Pot-Limit" or "Limit".
No-Limit Omaha does not really work, in truth, & is rarely played, Live or Online, as it just removes most of the the skill from the game.
In Omaha, you MUST use 2 cards from your hand. The A of hearts on a 4 heart Board is NOT a flush.
The 5 of anything on a 2-3-4-6-7 board is NOT a straight UNLESS you have another straight card in your hand.
Please note, these "tips" are for beginners only. Grown-Ups need not apply.
In 4 card Omaha, you have the equivelent of SIX Hold Em Hands. How so?
Let's give our 4 cards the letters, A, B, C, & D.
So, our 2 card holdings (& we MUST use TWO of our cards, not less, not more), are....
A-B
A-C
A-D
B-C
B-D
C-D
There is very little point in entering a pot with only ONE 2 card holding.
A-A-9-3, unsuited, is not much kop. Our only Hold Em hand there is A-A, really.
A-A-T-J Double Suited is MUCH better than "bad Aces". Our 2 card starting hands here are.....
A-A
A-T
A-J
T-J
A-J suited
A-T suited.
....so here we have SIX 2 card hands, ALL of which might be considered a reasonable starting hand in Hold Em.
Trips or Quads "in your hand" are as near useless as Orford at a poker Table. Just pass, pre.
Even if you have, say, A-A-A-6, your hand can barely improve from "one pair". Throw it away pre-flip, every single time.
Quads in the hand? Ditto. It's rubbish.
You are going to have to learn to pass the FLOPPED NUTS in Omaha on some occasions, if you intend to be profitable at the game.
Imagine a 4 way Pot on a 2 heart Flop (not at all unusual), & you hold the nut straight, but no straight extensions, & no flush draw.
Hands that re-pot you will include ANY set, any good flush draw, and some better straight draws. Someone holding a flush draw, a set, and a straight draw will NEVER let go. "Combo draws" are defo gonna fancy this coup, too.
Imagine holding 2h-3c-7s-8d
We see this flop, for the absolute stone cold nuts......
4c-5c-6s
But we are a 40%-60% "dog" against, say, 9c-8c-6d-6h. (Top set, flush draw, & gut shot str8 draw).
Now, no problem having a gamble here, we ARE ahead, but we deffo are NOT favourite, & by the time the River comes, as is often the case, ALL your money will be in the Pot. Fancy your entire stack on a 40/60 shot, repeatedly? Well no, we'd go busto.....
Omaha is great would be good if we can get more people playing it.
Omaha is NOT Hold Em - or anything remotely like it.
If you can play Hold Em, it does NOT mean you can play Omaha.
Aggression & Position are common to both, starting hand criteria could not be more different.
Mods - please now move this across to GPC.
Thanks.
OK, that'll do for starters.
Next up, we'll deal with the greatest thing ever in Omaha - wraps, & super wraps. Ooooooh.
PLEASE contribute your own tips, & questions, to the thread.
We have some great Omaha players on here, & I know they will weigh in with some beginners tips.
See you tonight, I hope.
You will flop a LOT of sets in Omaha, far more than in Hold Em.
But remember, a flush or a straight beats a set.....so if the board comes a straight OR a flush - or both - you are gonna be in a world of hurt.
In Hold Em, we only pass a set on ther Board about 10% of the time, when the turn & or river come really dirty. Sets are HUGE in hold Em. They are nothing like so important in Omaha.
In a multi-way pot, you flop top set, (no improvers at all) on, say, this flop?
9h-8h-7c
Good? Not really - every draw on earth will be against you. Not saying "pass", but proceed with great caution. Any straighting or flushing card is likely to hit someone.
Position is VERY important in Omaha, particularly pre-flop.
Usual positional rules & tips apply, but more so.
3 limpers when it gets to you on the Button? Only 2 choices. Bin any mediocre starting hand, RAISE with any decent holding. You may well get 4 or 5 callers, but you are controlling the hand from here.
You CAN see a lot more flops in Omaha. Try & flop hands that have lots of potential to improve, rather than "made flops". Miss the flop completely? Let go, quicker than a quick thing letting go. Over time, you won't regret it.
Omaha is HIGH VARIANCE. The better you play it, the more high variance it is.
Don't be getting out of your bankroll, it CAN send you skinto if you are not very disciplined.
PS- i am only banter mocking scousey not flaiming in anyway
Unfortunately I play a little home game on Wednesdays (I tried to get them to give Omaha a whirl once, I might as well have asked them if they wanted to set fire to their hair) otherwise I would have loved to join in
Hop on people, great game.
If you are unsure what your best hand is (your "holding"), go to "Options" & tick "Show Hand Descriptions".
Then, on each street, you - & you ALONE - will see what your best current hand is. (i.e., "straight to the Queen" or whatever).
