Poker Playing Robot

edited September 2011 in Poker Chat
Random question:
I was just wondering if anyone has invented a computer robot that has been programed with certain moves to play cash poker? I know poker shouldn't be able to be programed as a lot of it is down to personal reads and tells, but at the lower stakes people always say "Never bluff" which would mean just playing your cards, so technicaly a profitable set of comands could be programed into a computer and with ability to play as many tables as possible surely this would be very appeling.

I would not have the first idea of how to set this up and indeed, have no intention of doing so. So here's my questions:

1) Has anyone ever heard of them existing?
2) Would they work?
3) Are they legal?

Not too sure man. It looks like the industry is staying right on top of things. Seems to me also that any bots that do make it onto the online environment will lose at  mid/higher stakes too. I expect the detection employed by sites is of a very high standard and constantly evolving.
Not really too much here to convey a conspiracy but interesting from a science point of view.
I remember a bit about the development of Deep Blue in chess. Needed Grandmasters to aid with the programming. If a similar thing were to be replicated in poker it would be very interesting to try to understand how the ' bots ' would work. If it were possible it would lead initially to an optimal play scenario.
Ultimately humans should be able to adapt. They adapt to all sorts of playing styles everytime they sit down.

I have seen bots working and they are rubbish..you set them to play a certain style tag/lag etc and they play just like that.folding ak suited to a raise or calling a raise with 56 off etc.
as far as i know they are not illegal but they are banned under t@c of poker sites.

although on a site selling them there were adverts for full tilt and pokerstars even though they are banned on their sites!

The answer to your questions are

    1 Yes
    2 Yes
    3 No

They have been used, but the software used to for anti cheating spots them.

were plenty in operation on stars three years or so back

they operated at very low stakes on maximum tables and generated plenty of points and a small profit over time

Yeah you could do this pretty easily if you know what you're doing with computers. Yes it would definitely work at micro stakes because the way to win at these levels is virtually to play like a robot anyway. No it's not legal but of course it would work. You would just have to get the robot to really tighten up which is only the same thing you do when multi-tabling because you lose some of your other edges.

Would only work at lower stakes but could still be very profitable both in money made and C4P.... but again it is illegal.
