DONT GET EMOTIONAL

edited September 2011 in Poker Chat
Great post.

I've got a couple of mates who always chase losses and it's cost them big time.

Luckily i've seen them do it so it's not something i've ever done.

If things aren't going well for me I close the poker down and go do something else.

Most of us got into poker because it's fun and it's not much fun if you're getting stressed.

Had a good run lately which bumped up my bankroll after winning quite a few tornys, BUT today i made the mistake which i thought was a lesson i had learned but obv not! I bought into a lot of games today and was playing well and big stack for first half of most of them, but it all went horribly wrong i had every hand i was playing being beat even though i was ahead on most of them, Just sick beats after sick beats constantly i decided to up the stakes with dym and try and get back what i was losing, i bubbled on most of the tornys and my bankroll was just being eaten into gradualy and ended up losing half of it in today.

I started getting emotional about it and really pee d off (I didnt cry though) it felt like everything was against me and by the end of the evening i was at the stage of wanting to get a hammer and bosh it on the lappy, i was still up on my bankroll but all the hard work i done over the last couple of nights started to be all for nothing. It reminded me off when i started playing online poker and bankroll management was not something i really cared about, but over the last 6months or so i have really done well at sticking to it, not all the time to the book but generally and i certainly enjoyed playing a whole lot more. I really cant stress enough its not nice if you start getting emotional about what your losing and sticking to around 5% even less does take out that sting and you can deal with those bad days. I was prob playing 10% and over sometimes! Those good runs can be there one day and then crash on you the next if you take risks.

So im writing this to just remind players that maybe go through this themselves or the ones that get a few reasonable wins and think im gonna buy in for bigger and buy in a lot more JUST THINK BEFORE YOU DO. You dont wanna end up hating poker because of your own foolishness and then make those constant visits to area 51 ect. Id even suggest if you are going through a bad run and you feel yourself doing something silly then speak to me or someone on the forum who knows what its like and take a deep breath and Think about what your doing and how its effecting you.

Im sure everyone on here have gone through it at some stage but have learned not to do it again but some of us go back to that darkside without realising it and then its too late. I was lucky and won a £500 gar tonight and got back what id lost in the day a bit more but as i said i was lucky you might not be so!

I know im going on a bit but really dont want players to go through what i did tonight and venting my thoughts may make you think.

GL all and be good and wise, im off to the Church of Dazler now to prey for my sinful actions today :)

    good post mate

i wouldnt worry to much about it everyone has done it at one point some a lot more then once thats how sites survive

ive blown a few rolls a few times literally down to 0 hits you hard and starts making you think why did i do all that hard work to just spew it away, but then its just part and parcel of the game just got to get back at it and grind it out

glad to see you got most back but as you said NEVER CHASE LOSSES, WHEN YOU CHASE LOSSES YOU LOSE A HELL OF A LOT MORE !

    good luck tomorrow !

This post is great reading ! Honest, helpful and it even had a happy ending ( this time ).
A cautionary tale of falling off the heater with regards to BRM. Quality. I for one would like to see more of this. You write very well, have you considered this to be the start of an occasional blog ?

edit- Just to let you know that i was so impressed with what you have to say here i made a recommendation that it should be used as the basis of a topic in an up-and-coming 865 show. Hope you don't mind man ?

thats very kind of you BLACK_MASS im glad you liked it, my aim is always to be helpfull where possible through the expieriences i have had myself. Some new players that read this might not make the same mistakes hopefully which if id read up on the forums when i started on here would of saved me a lot of heart ache, there is a lot you can learn on these foums from some very expierienced players and contributors so id strongly recomend people to regularaly check out all corners of the forum. Thankyou also for the recommendation about it being used as a topic for the show of coarse i dont mind. I have done a couple of blogs before and would be up for doing them again if were asked :)

I must do this about once a week, usually Thursdays after I've been to my local live game and come home full of beer if anyone fancies some easy money!

Great post Dazler, it's so easy to do

Yeah, great post. I've been on a pretty terrible run at the cash tables for a lil while now and I know I've made the odd few mistakes but not enough to warrant the dip in my BR and then the last 1-2 sessions, it has eventually started to affect my play a bit, for the worse obviously.

So I've decided to take a few days maybe a week off from cash and come back refreshed. The only thing I've been doing really is playing the survivor each night and maybe a few DYMs. It's my first go in the survivor, bought in on Sunday and I've made it to Wednesday so far... wish me luck!

Great post Daz, bet you did cry.  I've done the same thing myself building a bankroll and then chasing losses by buying into bigger games, where invariably there will be better players and your edge is lost.  As you say you learn from your mistakes, and now I am a total bankroll nit.  Playing for me should be all about the fun, not playing while stressed out.  Glad you recouped your losses eventually, means you can afford to buy me a pint.

Hi man. Yeah the occasional blog would be cool if this is anything to go by.
I figured it would work well on a show because it should appeal to everyone at every level and culminates in a valuable lesson. I'm sure there are more than a few mouse-smashing tales to be told about tilt, spinning it up and brm abuse. Show me a person that has never tilted and i'll show you a liar or someone that has never played before.
It's great to get a bit of the human side of the game for a change. It is as just as important as, but gets buried beneath, the technical side of things. All this, " well my oppo was a reg so when he 4 bet me i insta  jammed cos i'm way ahead of his range", maybe instructive but can make for dull reading to say the least.
Thanx again. I'm sure most people that have done what you have wouldn't be prepared to share their experiences. And as you said yourself you already learned these lessons, you knew it was wrong but did it anyway. Honesty is the key to good writing i think.
( Columbo moment ) Just one more thing. Would you have written it if that last result didn't get you out of the hole ?  (I'm glad it did by the way ! )

not sure if i would have wrote it or not as the relief of getting it back was what made me think how very lucky i was, ive wrote a few moments expierience and my thoughts before, Im not the best speller or good with grammer for that matter but i do like to write how i feel rather than how it should be layed out.

Lol.  This is my average day of online poker, when I choose to play.

I think you know what the issue was here.  BRM.

I'm the last person to speak because my online BRM is awful though.
