Is slow rolling the done thing?

edited September 2011 in Poker Chat
I was playing a game the other night only a £10.00 entry and only 12 players in a local pub and midway through the game with 9 left this new guy slow rolled quad 4s ,He was told by a few of the older players that he was being very unjust in his play which didnt seem to bother him,I have never seen it before but thought it was a bit naughty on his play but is it allowed? Also is it acceptable on line as a few play loads of tables so may not slow roll on purpose? The slow roller finished 3rd so didnt cash so some good came out of it.

its bad etiquette, but a new player may not know this, or else he's just a knob. Its not against the rules though afaik

online its not acceptable either but may happen due to multitable or slow connection

How did the hand play out?

If another player is all in, then slow rolling this hand is ridic in my opinion.

If there were still other players to react after me, then I would want to give them the impression that my hand wasn't that strong and therefore I would play it slow to try and get all the chips in.

A proper slow roll is someone who has the absolute nuts and delays playing the hand when there is an all-in.

Exactly as above. It's not against the rules but it's just a horrible thing to do. I'd feel like a complete scumbag if I paused for ages then turned over the nuts.

But as PokerTrev says, if someone was left to act after him then it's not a slowroll because he's perfectly entitled to conceal the strength of his hand.

If there's no-one left to act then a slow-roll with the nutz is about as classless as it gets. I'd flip over and say sorry normally. Your fellow player is only your enemy when you're playing him. We're all in this cruel game together.

If there's players left to act it's 100% the right thing to do.

Your example is the former. Even if there was history I'd just flip them over and smile inwardly. Maybe slightly outwardly.

I had the best slow roll ever the other day.

Down the the final 6, 4 get paid.

Villain opens I go all in (a9dd) takes the villain about 90 seconds to call after he has counted his stake twice and then turns over aces!!

A Reg has a right go at him and he said I wanted to count my chips!!

I did ask him if he didnt have enough chips would he have folded!! He looked at me like i was stupid

Slow rolling just puts you down on their level. Rise above it, table the nuts more often and stack them. Just don't take your time showing it ;)

Cash Table at Nottingham just after Fulham game sun, 50/£1, Had a three way pot, me J/10 hearts,

Pre think been raise to £4, 2 callers,

Flop came summat like 67 Hearts, A spades, am acting second,

went check, Me check, pot bet [£12i think], call, me think then call for £12, [had £350 behind, been doin well!]

Turn, nother low heart!! HIT FLUSH, but weak ish!

short stack goes all-in for bout £25, i think bout re-raise, but just check, Matey last goes all-in  for £95!

I think for lil' bit and call obvs, [he could have better flush, but hey, am up, and defo not folding really!]

Anyway shortstack crushed, matey has AJ, & stomps of mumbling 'bit of a slow roll'!!

    LOL!!! Collect chips bout £280!!

I say nothing, coupla his mate's catch ma eye, and I just stare them down, like the hardest lil' Donk in Donksville, BenDog on the table just smiles!!!

Thing is I dont think most people know what a slow-roll is, and Are great players really bothered?!!

Exactly Hitman.  Someone put up a thread like this a few weeks back, the first thing I asked them was to please define what they believed a slowroll to be.

I dont think your 10Jh is a slow roll.  Plenty of action, you dont neccessarily have best hand.  In fact I was in similar spot last night with Qh flush with Ah on board, beaten by the K high flush.  You have to considor your opponents likely holdig.  It shouldnt be a snap call.

FWIW slow rolling is the lowest thing a poker player can do.  A true slow roll that is.  It serves no purpose other than to show how much of a dooche a person is.  What is there to be gained?  Other than losing the respect and camaraderie of your table mates.

Hitman thats definateley not a slowroll. In my book it can only be a slowroll if you have the absolute nuts.

i am probably one of the worst for slow rolling near the bubble and laying in last place. given the hand he had the nuts and given the fact that i would still be near the bubble after picking his chips up , i would still kill time to climb that ladder. its the slow roll without reason i don't like
