To roll or not to roll?

edited September 2011 in Poker Chat
I am an MTT and S&G(DYM and a few HU) player.  Play mains, minis, and all stakes from £3.30 to £87.50 on the DYM front, depending on how i feel etc.

I do ok, nothing spectacular, 70th at SPT Grand Final probably neatly sums up my performance and ability. Slightly above average, but could deffo do better. Shark scope graph(s) shows that I'm getting better tho after being pretty awful (some of you probably still think I am).

In the last week or so; I attribute this to run-good, not quite as many stupid moves/moments of irrational thought; I've done quite well (not-so thinly veiled brag) 1st and 2nd in a mini and winning the main last night and a good run of DYMs.

Consequently, now have a v.healthy Sky Poker balance.

Am still not (strictly) rolled for the Roller tournaments, but I've never played, am playing well(ish), running sweetly and am desperate to play in them.  Should I buy-in and hope to do a Dan or Alan (Made4Game / ElsaDog) and get a run going?

I've tried the 1/25 satellites and bubbled a few times. So, consequently, have never played.

I guess, it's a question of what this new found roll can do for me, would like to hear what Bankroll management experts think, higher stake players think?  If for example you have a 2.5k balance: are £110/£220 buy-ins acceptable? 4%/8% of roll?

...or...

should I take it most of it out and go back to my previous mid-stake dabbling?

Cheers - Dan

Gratz on last night. Btw did you get better quickly following my remedy recommendations last week ?

Do a bit of both.  Buy in direct as a treat....take some cash out so you can have some fun in real life with your poker winnings....and then use the rest of your balance with a normal BRM rule and keep doing what your doing.

Well done on your recent run good btw :)

Yeah, it worked a treat. Was about the healthiest I've been, even more astonishing considering I'd had manthrax 4 days previous.  Cheers B_M :D

Excellent ! The healing powers of fresh ginger, chillies, coriander and garlic are well documented outside of the west.
And what better than a curry to incorporate those ingredients ? Chilli con carne just as good tho. Any excuse to have a few hot toddies is also a blessing. I have an Irish friend always claiming to be coming down with a cold :)
In this area counter bought remedies really achieve nothing towards a cure.Just a waste of money. I have used the cure i recommended you for half my life and it has NEVER failed !  It has often led me to be feeling better than i was in the first place before i got ill. Job's a good'un. Spread the word.
As far as tourneys go i can offer you no magic formulas but gl anyway man !

    Congrats on your result.

I'd say your decision should be dependent on what you want to get out of poker.

Personally I probably wouldn't BI Direct to the Sunday Roller but then again I'm a huge BR nit and don't even BI myself.

I'd stick to what you are doing best, continue your run good, play some more satellites and get yourself in on the cheap.

Oh, and don't listen to Scotty, he's a degen fish.

I'd Pay for a Semi and if all else fails buy in direct on Sunday

After that keep £1k in if you want to take it seriously and work to your own BRM, im rubbish at this so would never advise anyone and it depends on the individual

Also A BIG WELL DONE MATEY thats a few rounds at the next SPT i see you :) WP keep up the run good

i personally wouldn't buyin to the sunday roller, if you want to give yourself a 'treat' then surely have 2 stabs at the thursday roller? prizepool not as big but at least you get 2 chances to win some nice cash. personally i wouldnt do either. try the sats, keep playing the 8pm main events and build up.

Do you adhere to the not risking more than 2% of roll in any one tournament?  So that's 5k of available funds? *gulp* Best get try and take another one down soon(ish) then.

Guess the WSOP is a way away yet, given it's about 400% of aforementioned balance.

Also, thanks for all the kind words and congratulations

If you are a recreational player then by all means you can be looser in terms of % of BR in tournies. but if you want to have the luxury of never depositing again and making a nice bit of money on the side of your job then be strict and try to satellite in.

if you wanna take a shot whilst your running good then dont let any of us stop you. just my opinion :)

Just bear in mind the whole ethos of the roller is going to be different to that of a ME/Mini. You only have about 25 (iirc) runners and payment only usually goes to about 3rd/4th. Of those you will have the pros of the site who have the money to buy in direct many of which you will have very little game play mknowledge about. The rest will probably be middle level players who have successfully satallited in. All in all they will be by nature a much harder tourney.

I think it's as simple as:
If you don't think you're rolled for them, just try once or twice. As long as you are still rolled for your regular games it's fine.

You only need to be rolled for a gametype if you play it often (my opinion ofcourse)
