Note taking guide

edited September 2011 in Poker Chat
I have read some of the guides written by succcessful players recently, such as the DYM guide by JohnConnor and  DOH's micro cash guide, which are very well written and full of valuable information. However I feel the biggest, sudden improvement I could make is on my note taking.

If anyone could a short but detailed guide I (and many others I'm sure) would greatly appreciate it.

eg defining traits, tells and common usefull acronyms (Such as HBL as seen in JC's DYM article)

Yeah I agree, I'm a bit clueless sometimes when it comes to good concise note writing.

ITS EASY , ya type in EXACTLY what ya see players do in diff situations , most of my note taking is by NOT bein in the pot as ya seem to see and take in more clearly what is goin on in a hand.

My problem is that i am simply not taking very good notes though, such as "Calls big for draws" or "Called an all in with A3off" etc. I just want to know what the best things to look out for are.

The notes I take are mainly on players I know I can exploit in the future. But the "best" notes, well, I think it's note-taker dependent?  Mine are grouped into 5:

    - stations, those who will call through the streets with any pair (more so than players who are on a draw)
    - aggro monkeys, where you need to try and get them in-line or risk them steamrollering the table
    - betting patterns, "criminally small bets with the nuts"
    - card ranges that people play, "limps with J3 sooted from utg"

and finally... players who I think are really good.

Just my 2p worth.  Good luck

I agree useful note taking is difficult especially when people try to vary their game so much but i know this sounds crude, but if you note someone as you first come across them, your first instincts are often correct whether they are  raising monkeys ,tight, or just general kn ob jockeys!

And that is why you're on my respected/really good player list sir

    Donkfish
    Call all
    Spew station
    Nitsville
    Sneaky snake
    Uber nut

...all work for me. The best thing is to develop your own style, using someone else's has to be learned! There is very little point in noting single hands as this may give you a misinterpretation of the overall play of that person. Note things like, bet/fold flops when missed as this tends to be 'patterned' behaviour!!

Mostly, glance at any old notes but almost disregard them and judge each player every time you face them to decide if they are on their game/drunk whatever!!

    Gl & Enjoyyyyyy
