Can you get a read online

edited September 2011 in Poker Chat
I have played live and sometimes you get reads on players but online i would say its nearly impossible to detect ,The only time i guess i could read an online player was last week on 20/40 cash player 4 kept running the clock down then would bet an over pot bet so i waited for a hand and got a set so when he overbet i min raised him and he called with bottom pair.I wondered if i read him correctly then noticed he was playing 5 tables so the running down the clock could of been due to that.

Against weaker players, timimg tells are pretty easy to pick up online.

Generally a long pause before a call is weak and you can bet out against them with impunity, a snap call / raise is generally a strong hand.

Of course, good players know this and will purposefully adapt their bet timings to tell a story

Bet sizing and bet timing is all you have to go on and normally is more than enough to get a solid read on a player and the strength of their hand in isolated spots.

There are plenty of stuff you can read online, like The Sun and all other newspapers are online now ...

I dont read long pauses as weak. Personally I see them as thinkers, trappers  or just plain annoying but not necessarily weak. Snap calls may well be  autocalls preset by a multi ( or over-eager ) tabler. You have to watch whats going on and try to be in control of the hand

that was a bad player, ive seen em before, sometimes they beat you, and you ask why would you go all in with that, the response i was trying to bluff lol, its funny, but yes you can get reads on players online, the ammount of time i look at the bet sizes, look at the story, i know im beat but ive been priced in to make the call, so i call anyways, usually as im pressing call i make sure to call there cards out, just dont shout out there cards at the beginning of the hand, cus people dont like it xP

The most obvious read I've found online is in MTTs. Some players (myself included) like to run the clock down later inan MTT (pre final table) - it can tilt players, and can mean fewer hands on your table (if you're chipped up, this can help). Such players will often play a premium hand far more quickly - good time to find the fold button.

The most obvious tell is if they fold they have nowt

There are a few online tells, i wont share the details here but you can, just by observing the same sets of players over a period of time definatly detect "tells" from them, speed, varience, bet sizes, slow plays - they are all there if you look long enough to find the patterns to each move set. there are no certainty's and no definates though, so just enjoy it and have fun :-))

    ps. notes ftw! :)

Also, take the time to review hands where agressive players have mucked losing hands at showdown, look at bet sizing re-run how the hand was played was played in your head and it's pretty easy to work out patterns of play which can be very profitable for you.

I was playing someone heads up the other night for the Heads up challenge and I'll swear their play was so  predictable that given another 10 minutes i could have told them what their cards were every hand. Post flop action was always the same, missed flop = check, a bit of the flop = min bet and hit big = half the pot. Pre flop was the same too very predictable. Fold , check or raise depending on the hand. It never varied. Tells galore and easy to read makes the game very easy.
